make sure all of your connections are seated properly. You shouldn't have ANY smoke at all. It's a good bet also to use a high temp silicone to seal all of your piping connections. I just checked my thimble and its cool to the touch(med heat) I would definitely check to make sure something isn't wrong

I used a stud finder. Yes they are reliable, just buy a good one. I've added one in the description below the video that will also recognize live AC wiring. You can also measure 16" increments off the corner of a room as that is a typical spacing for wall studs
@truthspace5525
@truthspace5525 3 жыл бұрын
@@appalachiandiy2415 I wouldn't suggest assuming 16" centers. A properly framed wall should be 16" centers from one end. Since most walls don't divide perfectly by 16", the other end will have the first stud in on 16", but then the second spacing will likely be less to compensate for the wall not dividing perfectly. Stud finder is best.

That J channel work looks a little janky, I see at least a half inch gap on the top .. sorry had to point that out :P I'm not great with siding, but the top channel should extend all the way across and have about an inch of "ear flaps" that fold down and over the side channels to shed the water away from the thimble. Also I would tape the J channel all around .. or if it's an older house like this one with tar paper, you are better off tucking the J channel under the tar paper. It can be tough to keep old tar paper from falling apart, its like unwrapping a mummy, you have to be super gentle.

I was disappointed that you didn't use the thimble on the inside as a template the same way as the outside. Cutting into the baseboard is a terrible idea. It makes restoring the wall much more difficult for when the time comes that the pellet stove is undesirable. All you had to do is add an additional 90 deg turn that you could have adjusted to any angle places in the middle of the straight pipe or added an additional straight pipe. There's a big difference between a professional and an amateur installation and there's no reason not to do a better job. I could see some framing at the bottom and right-side interfering with the size of your hole. relocating the thimble, a bit to the left and upwards would've been the correct solution. I'm guessing that a building inspector never looked at it. Fire & safety codes should never have corners cut. If cheap & fast is "your thing" then that's fine. I personally prefer to make things safe and correctly installed.
@appalachiandiy2415
@appalachiandiy2415 10 ай бұрын
The reason I cut into the base board is because the exhaust is low on the stove as well. I would of had to used 2 more elbows to get it higher. With it low now I can still get back there and work on it without a pipe in the way. (Had to replace a blower. With the pipe that high it would have been a pain in the butt. No restoration needed either stove is there to stay. Plus its baseboard not some ornate woodwork.
@MakeitZUPER
@MakeitZUPER 10 ай бұрын
@@appalachiandiy2415 Disconnecting the pipe isn't a big deal. You need to do it to maintain the flue anyway. As far as the stove being permanent, you won't likely be the last owner of the house, so I always make things like that easier to remove if necessary. It's always best to have a longer flue because if you change the stove out, you will be less likely to need to relocate the hole up higher. You should be cleaning out the flue every year because of the creosote buildup. The blower will/should last many years. I hope you put a fireproof base under the stove. I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I'm hoping to help you make better choices is all. If I can help you avoid the mistakes that others have made, I will call it a good day for all of us.

@@MakeitZUPERwhat's hard about replacing a baseboard? Its super cheap to buy and takes literally minutes to measure cut and install....that 90° turn is literally gonna be more expensive than that piece of baseboard.
@MakeitZUPER
@MakeitZUPER 8 ай бұрын
@@alexandrelafrance944 The concept is depending on two things. If the baseboard is in an old house and isn't painted, matching the old growth grain will require vintage salvaged lumber. The other is price in your workmanship. Every tradesman that looks at it will know it was an amateur installation. If the person has no pride in their home, then fine. I usually only see this low-level quality in slumlord buildings and DIY homeowners that don't know any better.
