Walmart Scan & Go | How it Works & Important Things to Know

This is a quick tutorial on Walmart Scan & Go which is now available with a Walmart+ Membership. I will show you how the app works and let you know everything you need to do before you head to the store to use it.
*It's worth noting that the Scan & Go options recently disappeared from the Home Screen of my Walmart App. I had to click on the Walmart+ benefits and scroll all the way to the bottom to find it.

Why can't they just match the Sams Scan and go. You checkout from your phone and a QR code is scanned by the person at the exit door. No need to go to any lanes for checking out at all.

Yes! I love the scan and go at Sam's ☺️ it's been around for a long time and I think it's more efficient than any other store. Maybe they are able to be more flexible because they check the receipt at the door. I definitely wish other stores used this model too. Thanks for watching!

The primary point should be to avoid the check-out lines. If that isn't a feature, it's completely worthless for me.

I’m not sure about your Walmart, but my Walmart has a separate line right next to self check out specifically for scanning and go customers. There’s even a big sign that says scan and go customers here. You just can’t miss it. Unfortunately, the people from self check out keep going to the scan and go line because it’s much shorter and I guess they don’t like waiting in that long line from self check out. So this doesn’t really help the situation because the employees are not there to regulate this or to take control.

I was thinking this too, not sure if mine has the scan and go lines, i have not notice but I have to check before I subscribe, this is the only feature I want is the "scan and go". I use self checkout most of the time, usually in a rush, hence I want to go option, so I can bag and go, without having to bag all my things at the front, which I want to avoid.

Should be available to use at any station even if + terminals are all busy. Walk up to any station or attendant, Scan and go.

I tried it and it will save a little time but its not worth it because you still have to have the machince scann the barcode but if they figure how to get one to skip the machine, that would be cool

@@silverbullit89 yea I just noticed, as I asked, they did not have a "special" station for scan and go, instead you have to any self check outs, and if they are full of people, have to wait in line, which sucks. They should have just scan and go stations "ONLY" for people who want to skip that line.

Try produce, such as bananas. Barcode works, but scales DO NOT have QR number to scan. Registers have no way to add to the order...problematic!

Some stores have scan and go screens only that are separate from the regular self check out lines. So it’s really fast.

I just started using this. I thought it would be like Sam's Club where everything is done on the app, without having to go to a check out. Might as well just scan at the checkout. Doesn't make much difference whether you scan as you take the item off the shelf or do it at the register.

It works in SAM s club, but it does not in Walmart. Very slow, takes forever, many times stops working, have to start again scanning, still you have to get in line to the register to copy the Qr code. Sams is directly, scan, pay in the app, no register, get receipt in the app, get QR of payment show at the exit, easy, Walmart, a nightmare.

I agree, Sam's is sooooo much better! I'm surprised they are so different. Hopefully Walmart will work out the kinks and get better in the future 🤞

Starting in September, 2022, a Wamart+ membership will also include a subscription to Paramount+ Essentials (ad-supported). I was looking into signing up for that streaming service, so it was the bait that lured me into signing up for a membership, haha.

Seems to me the most beneficial component of "scan and go" would be skipping the checkout lines... Similar to Sam's club. For me, that's the whole point of having "scan and go" otherwise save the $98 bucks .. your standing in line waiting for a self checkout register anyway. Here in my area all Walmart are super busy and have lines... Why would I pay $98 buck to still wait in line!? If/when Walmart goes to "skip the line" like Sam's club I'll revisit. U til then, I'll keep the $98.. lol

My Walmart has a separate line right next to the self check out specifically for scan and go customers. Yet somehow everybody from self check out also uses the scan and go line because I guess they didn’t see the big sign that says scan and go customers here. So every time I get to the line and I’m ready to check out I go into the scan and go line and people are always complaining talking about how I’m cutting in line when I’m not cutting at all! I pay $11 to Walmart every month so that I can skip the line and use the scan and go line instead. It is not my problem if people just can’t read. So frustrating that this keeps happening. Aside from that I haven’t had any major complaints about the service itself I think it’s a great Thing to have. Especially in a Walmart like mines where it’s so busy.

I am brand new to this, have not actually tried scan and go but am I to understand when you get in a certain range of 1 of the self checkout registers, It just picks up the app from your phone with your order?

i was just thinking, can't you take a picture of the QR code at the self checkout, print it out, and then after you shop just scan it with your phone and do it work? that way you don't have to wait in line? Just a thought.

Another downside to Walmart scan and slow go... only debit or credit cards allowed... gift cards can be selected for Walmart pay

Ok thank you, I have had this app and have put my credit card on the app as well, but have never use it to my benefit, the way you just showed everything looks simple so will give it a go, but 1 thing you had to have your phone on the app the whole time you was in the store?

Yes, you have to keep the app open to scan. I guess you could stop and scan it all at the end but that seems like a lot more work.

Were all the little backpacks identical? If they have different UPCs that will mess up their inventory! Plus if you scanned them separately , some may have come up a lower price.

good point ..... same about lunchables. .....if flavors are dirrent they may have different prices ..sometimes brands change packaging etc and you may be missing out on a clearance price too let alone it really does mess up inventory too. and the first one you scan may be the lower price and the rest higher ...then you are cheating the store . . inventory wise it is not only for the store but for other customers who may be looking for a certain color and the app shows 5 and there are none left in that color because someone rang them up with other similar items .(prob what sometimes happens when i try to order curb pick up and it shows there online but out when my order is done,) and the price diffrence may be crazy . exp. someone on a craft group bought 2 containers of glitter , one blue and one silver . (reg check out) Didnt realize till she got home that the blue was $4 more .....same exact containers size brand etc. she only noticed silver price on store shelf, grabbed both and purchased a lot of items so it was only when she checked reciept that she realized. ...now if that was done with the scan and go by the customer punching in multiples , it could be considered theft.

Does anyone know if you can use EBT with scan and go? Do you have to pay through the app or can you pay at the register for the things that were scanned in the app?

Used it for the first time tonight. Here in KY you do have to have Walmart+. I wasn't sure how to do produce that has to be weighed. I just put my cherries back. Any tips?

I didn't get to try it out on anything that needed to be weighed. I know some stores have the scale that prints and labels so you can just scan the label. Otherwise you can weigh it at self checkout and add it there. It seems like If you can't print the labels it's kind of a pain to use on produce.

In China they just walk in the stores take stuff and there bank account is charged for items they walk out with ,face recognition or maybe chipped?

Just used it today but had to scan to check out and then do another checkout with my produce that needed to be weighed. The store had no experience with this. I know I need to weigh produce but is there a.way to do that and add it to my cart or does it have to be two steps? Thanks.for any help!

Unfortunately I don't have a good answer for that. It seems to vary by store. I've heard of a bunch of different ways it is handled. Sorry I'm not more help on that.

it works with produce. You scan the barcode on one of the produce items, and it will tell you that you need to weigh it at the self checkout. Its extremely simple. Note that the cashiers now may be verifying your bagged items after you check out too. Walmart has recently noted that there is massive store shrinkage, so I expect them to be checking plus member scan and go more frequently

Yes, I always put the bags right in my cart and scanned/ filled them as I went. I know my Wegmans completely discontinued the program because of all the loss so I wouldn't be surprised to see more rules. Sad that some people ruin it for everyone 😢

Scan and Go is so pointless if you have to wait in line to get a receipt to leave. It makes no sense why they don’t use the Sam’s Club method of generating a QR code that an associate can scan at the door.

I did the 30 day trial. It was ok but I didn’t feel it was worth the $98. And then I went shopping without the plus membership and let me tell you. I really missed the scan and go service lol. Before I was like it takes too long to scan as you shop. But then doing it the regular way I was like oh man I miss the scan n go feature. So I ended up getting the $98 a year plan. I wanted Amazon prime as well but I practically live at Walmart every week so I use Walmart more often than amazon. Amazon is $150 for the year. One thing I will say is that Walmart lied about the shipping cost on items. It tells you you saved $6 or so when you order online as a plus member but let me tell you I was ordering online way before plus membership came along and they didn’t charge me for shipping on the items I ordered online. It comes through fedex. So they are misleading you there but the $98 is worth it for me for the scan n go feature. 🤷‍♂️. They got to me what can I say. I’m still trying to understand how this happened?? 🤦‍♂️. How did they get $98 out of me? 🤷‍♂️

Omg I'm the exact same!! I didn't renew after the trial and I miss scan and go sooooo much! I'm a pretty dedicated Wegmans shopper and they do have the scan and go for free so I've been using that all of the time!

@@saleshark2009 I just never realized how annoying it was to scan your items at the register. First it was the self scan register which I loved better than the ones with the human checking your items but now I gotta have it on my phone. Comes in handy in the smaller Walmarts with less checkout lanes which one is down the road from me and I hate going there because it takes too long but with the scan n go feature it’s a breeze now.

i was just looking into the + membership yesterday ...they offer a discounted membership for those with EBT (and other categories) and you have to verify it . i dont see it working any diffrently than curb side ordering . you would have that card on file in your account ...but even that (curb)requires a credit card on file before you can add an ebt one.

This has been a common question and the answer seems to vary by store. Unfortunately most of the time the process requires you check out separate for those items or add them on at the checkout. Such a bummer.

Great video! I got the 30 day plus trial too and was wondering how exactly did this work. I’m curious how the Walmart credit card treats this type of purchase because I always did curb side to get 5% cash back with my Walmart credit card. In store purchases are always like 2%. If this gives me 2% cash back I’ll stick to curb side to get the full 5% cash back which would essentially pay for the membership and some.

I tried first time at our Walmart. 4 Clerks standing around and no one knew anything about it and I was trying to learn. I took the scanner from the check out and scanned my phone. After watching this video I see that was wrong. I should have took my phone and scanned the check out screen. Still why don't they teach they're people anything? Everyone that works there should know how to do it.

I find the scan and go very convenient. Does anyone know how to get the register to print out the paper receipt also? I know the receipt is on my phone but I want a paper receipt.

I can't say for sure as I never tried to get a paper receipt but I've seen comments that say that you can ask the cashier working the self check-out and they can print a copy. Sorry I'm not much help on this topic 😢

Yes. I have to look for a person who overrides the register to allow it to print. Wish there was an option in the app settings that allows you to choose.

@@saleshark2009 Yesterday when I shopped those bananas gave me a fit AGAIN! Then A choice popped up to transfer items to the register, so I did because it would not let me "continue" to scan the QR code @#$#^&%#@ !!! I had to insert my card to pay and I got a paper receipt!

I wish they did it as Sam's does. Everything is done on my phone including payment and then I just show the exiting person a QR code. No register stop is needed there.

@@saleshark2009 I just signed up for the Walmart+ trial this morning and placed my first delivery order. There's surprisingly little content on here about how all this works so I was glad to find your videos. Either way, waiting in line at self-checkout for a few minutes has to be better than waiting in like 30 minutes for the ONE cashier. Maybe we can have the Sam's version someday!

Someone else mentioned in the comments that at their Walmart they ask the person working at self checkout for the scan and go barcode and they are able to skip the line that way.. might be worth a try ☺️ thank you for watching

Oh so you don’t need to wait into the self check out Line you just look for the person that works in self check out and they will scan you out on their little computer that they help all the customers on if they need help you can just ask them to scan your thing and they will give you a receipt and out the door you go so you don’t have to wait in line

I just tried in my app again, when I click services the scan & go is listed under Walmart+ benefits. When I click on scan & go my only option on that screen is to sign up for a Walmart+ membership 😢 so strange

It's crazy how different they all are! Funny enough this is actually one of the older ones in our area. Sometimes I drive a little further just to shop at the nicer stores LoL. There's one that has super smooth floors so the carts don't rattle.. it's almost eerie how quiet it is in there..

Walmart workers usually have an unused register near the exit of the self check out areas... we should be allowed to scan QR codes there ... 🤷🏾‍♂️ or at customer service

I pay for Walmart + on a monthly basis and I got it because, a member gets to have Paramount+ as a streaming service and that's the service one receives as part of the plan, just like having Amazon Prime, a member has Amazon Prime Video. I haven't tried scan and go, but I will today since I am a member already… Looking forward to using it

I wish I had a good answer for this but it seems to vary by store. If your store has the scales that print labels then you can just scan that BUT if that isn't an option I've heard you have to cash out separately. I didn't get to try it since most of our produce at my store is prepackaged and I have since cancelled the membership. Sorry I'm not much help on this one 😔

When you get to the produce section of your Walmart, there should be a scale for scan and go customers. All you do a select your produce from the screen and it will weigh it for you. A QR code will then pop up on the screen itself that you can scan with your phone and it adds the produce automatically to your cart. This is a new feature that was recently added to my Walmart, so I cannot say if all Walmarts have it yet.

I've stopped trying to scan everything. Sometimes it beeps, sometimes it doesn't, it all goes into my bag. I'm not a cashier, don't care if I make some mistakes on Walmart's behalf.

One would think America was so advanced. UK and Europe have been doing this for years with ASDA and Tesco. Scanners can be picked up at the entrance and nobody has to pay a ridiculous $12.95 per month just to scan and go. The system is entirely automated to decongest a busy grocery store.

I still think it's easier to not have to unpack and repack everything BUT I totally agree that having to wait in the self checkout line makes it less appealing. Our Wegmans just rolled out a similar program, it's free to use with no membership fee & they have dedicated checkout lines so you can just scan quick and head out. I like it sooooo much better!

No improvement since this video. The Walmart membership cannot be shared unless you share a cell phone. The app is synced with 1 phone number. Also, at the register in our store their are 3 QR codes present. 2 on screen and 1 on the device creating confusion. Liked the scanning. Hated the checkout. So If you want to use it practice with a single item first.

I refuse to shop at walmart because of the rediculous lines at checkout. $12.95 / month to use Scan & GO?! I guess Walmart doesn't want my business.

The $12.95 a mo. Is not just for Scan and go, it's a Walmart Plus membership fee for free unlimited grocery delivery to your home as long as you spend at least $35 minimum. You also save on gas at Walmart gas stations and Exxon. From what I have read you also get Early Access to Holiday items.

@@daisyblue7209 My point is that you have to pay to use scan and go. I don't care what else comes with the $12.95/month. Scan and gp should be FREE. I drive past Walmart to shop elsewhere.

@@Clay_Maguirewell you may not care about what else they offer but for the vast majority of people what else they offer on top of it is well worth it. Free shipping on basically anything you can order from them that's then add to the fact that it's maybe 5 to $10 to have someone deliver all your groceries, I mean that by itself is worth it saving the time and extra money I would spend grocery shopping is huge. Then at Paramount Plus for free and ten cents off of gas and this pays for itself. If anybody thinks it doesn't save money having them delivered groceries compared to going and getting your own groceries just think about all the times you get stuff that wasn't on your list because of you wanting to get something extra to snack on and so on so having your groceries delivered can save money for sure

The travel perks would be great for some ppl too . i like the idea of the return from home perk too. i alway toss boxes and dont have a car so it would save me a lot of work and time not having to worry about those things...we are considering the plus service

They should make scan and go free and mainstream, then they could get rid of the checkout lines all together and ideally pass those savings down to the customers

Not meant to be convenient to the customer at all. This looks to benefit Walmart only. Fewer employees to pay this way.

I definitely agree there is a huge benefit to companies that don't have to pay cashiers. For some reason I do prefer to shop this way though so it's a win win for me.

Except it is convenient. Much less stressful to be checking out as you shop vs. having to scan an entire cart full at once at the register as people are waiting for you.

I wonder if this is something that varies regionally 🤔 everything I've read says you need the membership and since my trial ended I can't use it without signing up for Walmart+. Maybe they are working towards making it available for everyone, I would LOVE that!
