Walt Garrison has always been one of my favorite Dallas Cowboys. He's certainly much more admirable than some of the trash they have playing today.

Can you imagine how much fun it must have been to have both Meredith and Garrison on the same team? Both were such humorous personalities. I bet they made it more enjoyable for everyone else.

I'm a Tom Landry-era Dallas Cowboys fan. Don Meredith, Chuck Howley, and Bob Lilly were my very favorite Cowboys for several years. #32 was definitely added to that list later. I saw him tote the ball at the Cotton Bowl, watched him play at Texas Stadium, and watched him steer-dog at the Houston Rodeo. The NFL is obviously void of Walt Garrisons today. God bless our pro football heroes from a bygone era.🏈

'Hi, I'm Walt Garrison and I don't smoke. But I still enjoy tabacca. Smokless tabacca like Skoal here. Just a peench between my cheek and gum gives me real tabacca pleasure. And since I don't light up, I can use it doing anything without tying up my hands. So, go smokeless with Skoal, Copenhagen or Happy Days Mint. The tabaccas you don't have to smoke to enjoy'. I used to do this routine at parties in Alaska (while drinking , of course). Walt had a mutual friend in Juneau and I missed meeting Walt when he once visited when I was out of town. Oh, well. But I do drink my morning coffee from a cup from Harvey's BBQ down there in Big D. That's where the wittlin' took place. Skoal, brothers! (Yes, that's Earl).

Meredith had a funny line about Walt. "He was 'Mr. Consistent'. If you needed 3 yards on 3rd down, Walt would get you 4. If you needed 10 yards, Walt would get you 4".

I got to know Walt Garrison thru my job in management at the Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas. We had a bar/restaurant called “THE WALT GARRISON RODEO BAR”. We worked with The Mesquite Rodeo and partnered with a charity important to Walt and his Wife Debbie. His reputation was as real as his image. He drove the big duel wheel pick up, wore pressed Levi & Straus jeans and yes, he had the Skoal in his back pocket. Some years later, I took a job at a small, but established Golf and Country Club in Denton. On my first week or two as GM of the club, someone mentioned Walt had pulled up to the club in his pickup. I looked out my window, saw him, and walked out to say hi. Walking up to the truck window, he saw me, smiled only as Walt could, said “what the heck you doing here”. I explained when he said almost apologetically, “you know, I’m not really a country club guy”. I just laughed. He laughed and I would see him at the club once in awhile. What a beautiful and wonderful human. He was as he appeared. Years later, I happened to be listening the “the ticket” radio in the morning when they had Walt on following Dandy Don’s passing. Walt was very moved and choked up talking about Don Meriden. Walt and Don were roomies when Walt joined the Cowboys. Walt was a real Cowboy in every sense of the word. Men like that were and are hard to find. RIP Walt.

Dude was tough. One of my all-time favorite NFL guys. The genuine article. So many, many great players in this organization and he's one of them.

Didn't see his playing days but I do remember the tv commercials for Skoal and he did one for a credit card where he was in a restaurant and called to the waiter.... Hey, Garson, get over here. It was hilarious.

The thing i am shocked is he's still going to strong at 78. Look at Guy Morriss, who was a center for the Eagles from 73 to 83 and then college head coach at Kentucky and Baylor. He died yesterday at 71 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2017. He most likely had CTE as well. Still with Walt with all the punishment of football, ranching, and rodeo's, I am shocked that's it didn't wear him down physically. Just sometimes there's people like Walt in this in world that can do it all and still come out fine on the other end when it comes to these physically demanding jobs.

Walt Garrison was the best name ever for a Dallas Cowboy. He was a great player in his era. I was never a huge cowboys fan but l always admired Garrisons ability and toughness.

Man I remember that run against the Dolphins in the final quarter where dragged along about three Dolphins with him!!! I was five but I could feel what he was feeling. After all these years we are not losing this game even if I have to drag the whole team with me into the endzone.

He was a great personality. I wish he'd been able to play a bit longer.

This man, Walt Garrison, was my hero when I was a kid. I played running back and like Walt, I wasn't fast, but I was quick and had good hands and caught a lot of passes. The other thing was, on short yardage situations, I was the one the coach sent in to pick up the first down. During one of those on the goal line, an opposing player speared my knee with his helmet. The hit broke my patella, but I wanted back in the game. I had no idea my knee was broken, it just hurt. Anyway, I scored a TD. That happened because of Walt Garrison's inspiration for being tough. I wanted to be as tough as my cowboy hero. On that play, I was. So, thanks Walt. Though, I've always been a sh*tty roper, I've never bulldogged a steer, and as I've gotten older my riding skills have diminished. Unless you're talking about motorcycles, LOL! 😅 Oh, and I got to wear number 32 on the JV football team, woohoo!

It was 1995, a BBQ joint in Dallas, as I walked in I noticed some iconic Americans on the walls and mentioned to the man behind the counter how much I appreciated my heroes presented in his establishment. He said, ’“You like heroes, let me introduce you to some”and he walked me over to a table, there was Roger Staubach and Walt Garrison, he introduced me and after pleasantries Roger asked me where I was from. I said, “God’s country”, he said, well where is that exactly? I said, Oklahoma, the entire area lit up with laughter. He said, “how do you figure Oklahoma is God’s country”? I said, “well, I’m on the road a bunch and I call God everyday” Everyone’s interest was peaked as the entire dining area listened intensely. I said, “you can imagine a fella could run up a pretty big long distance bill each month”. Everyone was nodding yes, humoring me, I said, “well, from Oklahoma it’s a local call” and everyone in the place erupted with laughter, clapping, at the punch line. They were very gracious and thank you for jogging my memory. #BoomerSooner 😁🇺🇸

My favorite players as a kid. I got his autograph when I was a kid living close to where they trained. He was super nice (as they all were). I loved how he ran, how he'd get under tacklers and buck them off- it was just great. He wasn't the best fullback, in fact he was pretty small for fullback, but he was so tough and well built he could do what any other fullback could do, block, run and catch- and he was just so tough for a 205 pound fullback. Great video. PS. he was voted to the Pro Bowl in 1972. His knee injury sucked, but frankly it was about time he retired. We lost a ton of great players during and after 1974, which is why the 1975 Cowboys had so many rookies and were such a surprise to get to the Super bowl. (we lost Garrison, Hill, Morton, Hayes, Green, Toomay, Niland, Lilly, Manders, and a bunch of others. It was a bloodbath).

Walt Garrison was a bad boy. He shared the backfield with guys like Don Perkins, Dan Reeves, Duane Thomas, and Calvin Hill, and still managed to get in good runs and receptions.

After spending nine years with one of the pickiest coaches in the NFL, I’d say he was pretty good. Earned two SB RINGS and retired because of an injury bull dogging.

Talk about an example of a true cowboy, rodeo and otherwise. He was one tough son-of-a-gun and is still, in my opinion, one of the greats. A tough, classy guy. God rest his soul!

Walt Garrison, same last name as mine was my second cousin. One of my Aunt’s through marriage had a photo album with his childhood photos. I loved Walt and he was tough. Someone once joked if you needed two yards, Garrison would give you three. If you needed 3 yards, Garrison would give you two. He was good though.

How good was he? Better than most of us. He got a D1 scholarship and played multiple years in NFL. I think that separated him from many other would be athletes. Just like any other guy like him. They are all good.

Walt Garrison used to visit the Stockyards in Fort Worth and was a patron at Cowtown USA, Filthy McNasty's and The Cadillac Club off of Exchange. My brother and I use to work the parking lots behind M.L. Leddy's and we always saved his VIP spot and watched his truck. He was a very nice guy. Dood you got some insane high quality videos!

Great tribute to a truly tough man. More than once Walt was hurt, Landry said "Walt is out" and Garrison said "No, I'll play." And I hate the Cowboys.

Great video! I remember watching Walt play in the late 60s and giving him the nickname Garrison Gorillas after the ABC TV series by the same name. I had forgotten about his performance in the NFC title game with the 49ers where he played with a collarbone injury. Wow!

I went to work for a man named Dawson McAllister right after he bought the old Walt Garrison Arena in Benbrook, TX. I never met Walt, but I heard that he was in the building a few times when I was on the grounds. As many of you, I wish players today were more like the ones of old. They seemed to have better attitudes and personalities.

Walt Garrison played before my time but I always thought he had the coolest football name.

As always, a great job! Walt Garrison (Little Pudding) played football the way it was supposed to be played. Growing up in Texas I tried to play football the way Garrison did. I was a defensive tackle and fullback when I played, I picked 32 because of Garrison and due to the fact that they wouldn't let me wear #74 (Bob Lilly) at running back. I broke my collar bone in a playoff game and remembering that Garrison had played with one, so did I. I didn't tell anyone until after the game had been decided. Garrison and the Cowboys of the '60s and '70s were major influencers to my playing and coaching career!!

I met Walt about 5 or 6 years ago. He was very polite and couldn't stop talking about of his grandsons that wrestled. At that time, one was in HS in Ohio and the other was on the roster at Okie State.

I met him once at OSU. I was just a freshman and he a star football player. He appeared to me to be a grounded, down to earth gentlemen who was not full of himself in the least and respected others, no matter who they were.

I watched him as a kid in the 70s, even though I didn't like the cowboys, I liked Garrison and thought he was an exceptional and tough player.

Starting out as a linebacker explains a lot. When he ran you got the impression that he wasn't out to avoid you. Like he would "prefer" to run over you. Its like a 4 wheeler mentality. "Oh, I think I can roll over that." "Eww, look a speed bump!" Ahhhh. When football was football. Like rugby with gear.

Watched him play for his whole career. They always said he was not fast, yet you see him blow passed people and seldom caught from behind. He hit the hole as quick as anyone. While I agree he did not possess blazing speed, he was far from slow. And there was no lack of power. Many of his highlights show him pulling several players at one time. Just a good old boy.

Though not my original inspiration 4 the #32 (that honor belongs 2 the LA Lakers' Magic Johnson), Walt Garrison gave #32 SO MUCH CREDIBILITY W/ME bc HE PLAYED 4 THE DALLAS COWBOYS & certainly was 1 helluva player. When I think of Walt Garrison; I think of "goal-line stands" then his Skoal commercials.

Don Meredith used to say about Walt: "if you need 4 yd give the ball to Walt he'll get you four yards if you need 10 yards give the ball to Walt he'll get you 4 yards"
