I'm not buying a beige trenchcoat or a camel-coloured anything. I know they're classics, but on me it's like watching a dimmer switch draining all the colour from my face. I do wish more influencers would make videos like this, being honest that we all have different shapes, sizes and colouring and that the classic "must haves" will not work for everyone - or only if you tweak it. e.g., maybe you need a navy trenchcoat instead lol.

A Polene handbag is on my wish list. I visited their boutique in SoHo in March, but they did not have the color I wanted. I will be going there again in September, so I will check it out at that time. I gave up wearing heels about 15 years ago. I am now 66 and comfort is my number one priority. Glad to see you state your opinions, but still offering an open-minded mindset. Thanks for your video.

Omg! This is why I love your content! You don’t buy into the old saying without self reflection. I was watching a channel yesterday for over 50 women. Her closet must haves are white button down, blazer, pencil skirt, LBD, heel pumps…. She was wearing a polyester crazy print tunic. I was like, are you joking? Many over 50 women are not in corporate job or are retired, why dress like a paralegal? I do have these items but they haven’t seen the light of day for over 20 years and probably never again (am retired). Over 50 women are changing life style, changing body, and easing into middle age. Those old staples are probably only good for attending funerals.

I listened to every influencer on KZfaq and bought a classic trench coat (it was not cheap) because I was told it was a wardrobe staple and I would be wearing it every day. Well. I live in California where the weather is always nice and it hardly ever rains, and the trench coat is basically a fancy raincoat. I think I wore it once when I was out running errands. People looked at me like I was crazy.

Omg! I just did that with the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. It came and I put it on and I thought- why? It’s going back. I’m retired and live basically in jeans. I’m more interested in elevating my jeans look. I’m going to concentrate on sweaters, sneakers and loafers and nicer tops and get rid of the cheap T’s that fill my closet right now. I bought a nice Tommy Bahama Aruba sweatshirt that is a classy sweatshirt. No hood; a little structured. Not sloppy looking at all. That’s who I am. I will have a couple of good, going out outfits but casual is me.

Oh no! I will say, a trench coat works great over a nicer outfit when a coat is too heavy and a cropped jacket looks too casual. That being said, if you have to force it, it’s probably not meant to be! ❤️❤️❤️
@hotchicsf

@@ANNAREID29 I need to amend this by saying that when I was younger (in my thirties), I lived in San Francisco, where the weather was always foggy & damp, and the summers were super chilly. The trench coat would have been perfect there, but alas...I live in Silicon Valley now, where it is always sunny and nice, even in winter, so it would be hard to find a day to try to wear it without it looking, as you said, 'forced'. On the other hand, my leather scuba jacket gets lots of wear in the cooler temps because it doesn't look forced. I would say that the black leather jacket is one of my must-have classics.

I've never been convinced that Classic means a specific item. To me it's about fit & proportions. Trendier items usually have exaggerated proportions ( very oversized/shapeless or extremely cropped/tiny for example) or excessive detailing that can date them quickly. If you know what cuts, colors, fabrics & proportions look best on your body, those are your classics imo.

I do love classics, they’re my personal style. But, there aren’t any rules in personal style, wear only what makes you look and feel amazing. Essentials and basics are highly personal and specific, too. I don’t like many of them that are always on these lists: jeans, high-heeled pumps, structured, top-handle bags, black leather jackets, etc. I prefer other things, for a variety of reasons, so my essentials/basics are very different, but all within the general classic framework.

Such a wonderful video. You know that there are six basic style personalities (lots of branch offs from these of course) but that are taught to multi international certified image consultants like myself. You absolutely hit the nail on the head explaining why you would not wear the so called classics. Thank you Emma it drives me mad how many times I need to explain to my clients why those so called classics do not work for their personal style. Firstly look at the colours that enhance you. Secondly look at your body shape. Most important is to look at your style personality. Next is to look at your lifestyle. Last but not least, seek out a professional who can help you reach your goals effortlessly. Thank you Anna Xxx

I agree with 99% of what you listed (I still love a long cardigan - winter and all, but I like the shorter ones too). Ballet flats are just hard, you have to be very thin with thin legs. They can also have kind of a juvenile look. Plaids are ok, but I never reach for them. Pencil skirts were always more work than they were worth, same with black pumps (also both are pretty dated I feel, even corporate is more casual/stylish these days). And not to be picky, and somebody beat me to it, but it's Naturalizer, not Neutralizer. Awesome video!

Classics are great, but, yes, I've avoided more than my share of them: white anything, pencil skirts, bucket hats, cardigans, polka dots and stripes. My look is monochrome, usually dark colors so my blonde hair looks even more blonde! Every person has to find his or her own "look" and comfort zone with clothing styles. I get the same old thing all the time. I have found what I like and I stick with it. I wear long sleeves year-round; I like the elegant look of them.

Love your videos! So agree on the large tote 👍. The thing with many trends- like the Balmain blazer- is that once everyone wears one- original or dupe- then we all look the same. I prefer uniqueness and appreciate more when others use their creativity and personalization. That creates a more interesting and artistic fashion statement.

Personally, I've never liked clothes or accessories covered in logos, going back to the 80s when that first became a thing. I would literally take a stitch-ripper and remove labels from the outside of clothes, so the big logo tote was never something I would buy. The idea of paying extra to advertise a brand on my clothing is nonsensical. That's why the quiet style suits me better. However, I've also not paying extra for "if you know you know" brands, either. I don't know. If it's plain and well made, that's my thing. And living in the UK, this means I've reached the age of Marks & Spencer. I'm with you on the black high heels and pencil skirt - that isn't my life any more. And wearing cardigans instantly transforms me into my own grandmother 😀 I save those for loungewear.

I love pencil skirts and A-line skirts. Most of my work skirts are pencil skirts. Black, Navy, red, yellow, brown with polka dots, white etc. A knit top or a silky blouse on the top, pencil skirt on the bottom, that is my work uniform. Very put together. For shoes, I love block heels below 2.5 inches with pencil skirts, they look great and very easy to walk in. I don't own any of the items you mentioned because I have no use for any of it. I'm sick to death of logo's so I'm loving the quiet luxury trend. Got rid of my LV Neverfull a couple years ago and haven't regretted it once! (But did keep a few more subtle bags that I love) By the way, I'm currently looking at a gorgeous Balmain bag that is a smaller tote style and the price is ridiculous good compared to LV, Gucci, etc. I'm moving in the direction of no obvious logos and just beautiful, high quality items now.

I still have a few items but I mainly steer away from classics now, for example I got rid of my tan trench coat because I hated that. But I did buy a bright green short trench coat with gold buttons that I love. Don’t know if the short length, bright green color and pretty gold buttons take it out of the classic category, but I do like it. I liked all of the styles you mentioned that you would wear instead. Love this video Anna! You are so right! I also don't like white button up shirts or plaid shirts on me. I think it's the collar, anything with a higher neck or neck detail of any kind just does not look good. I've been tempted by the Rails plaid shirts at the Anniversary sale though. 🥰

I really love this topic and how you talked about why these items don't work for you. At times I am tempted to buy a white button up shirt because everyone keeps saying that everyone needs one, but when I think through it it isn't a good choice for me- I live in a very casual part of the country where it's either blazing hot or raining, I don't find button up shirts comfortable, I gravitate away from wearing white every single time.... And it's really nice to hear someone in the know say that it's ok if it's not for me.

Hi Anna great points🙌 i dont need just black basic pencil skirt. I do have Chanel suit, from 2012 spring, which probably my favorite collection of all times…and even its pencil, its so much more to it 😜. Now i do love cardigans long, short, mid length. Mostly short ones. But this year got 2 others one is very cocoonish mid length, great to wear with slip dresses, in the SF fall/ winter, and another one floor length, in neutral color, very thin, great for those outfits, that are little bit risque 🤪 no super high heels for me either. I am looking to invest in kitten heels. I did liked from gucci, the nude ones, has some sparkle and gg’s all over, but i think very elegant ones. Love ballet flats, have Chanel black ones for years. Great to wear with maxi form fitting dresses, to make more casual and also great with mini dresses, it gives more elegance vs more sexiness with higher heels. Have a blessed day🙏💗

I have been a stay at home mom for the last 12 years so I think my corporate work wear days are definitely over. I miss them though, was one of the things I liked about working in an office. I liked pencil skirts when I could fit into them. Now my wardrobe has to be based on comfort - housework, school run, grocery shopping mainly. I’m quite OCD about even the most casual clothes and even used to get stressed thinking about what to wear grocery shopping because something was always ‘off’. I’d get v irritable about going. I spent so much time trying to figure out a solution watching videos like these and finally came up with solutions that are working for me. In my current age and stage anyway. I am dreading having to up date it all over again when the next phase of ageing makes me feel as though it no longer works which seems to happen every few years. Anyway it is such a relief not to have to think so hard every time I get dressed now I have a few basic ‘rules’ to follow. Regarding those expensive blazers I would never have gone for one, too expensive for starters but they look way too tight and uncomfortable. You’d have to be super thin to feel comfortable in one.

Anna, I come for your style sense, but I stay for your honesty and humor! 100% agree w/ your list and your advice to "you do you". I'd like to add I've never been a LOGO bag girl bc my attitude has always been -- if I've paid you "Mr Designer" ...$XXX to own your purse, Tshirt, eyewear -- now I'm expected to be a walking advertisement for your brand? I think the pro-ballers, movie stars, etc have it right. "Pay Me".

I used to love canvas totes because I brought my iPad everywhere. Now I bring just my phone and a slim wallet, I use mostly small size structured leather handbags (no larger than 8x10). My outfit is usually on casual side, a well made polished bag elevates the presentation without me putting on face paint.

I used to be anti-black pumps too until I found a silhouette and material that doesn’t feel corporate. The Stuart Weitzman Anny pumps are my go-tos and they are incredibly elegant because of that V on the toe box, and the pointed toe isn’t too severe. I also like patent and suede for evenings - I do agree that traditional smooth leather pumps look corporate. Unfortunately I think SW discontinued their Anny style (which is a mistake imo!) but it’s still possible to get online via some outlet shops or secondhand. However it’s worth looking into SW pumps in general - they are typically very sleek and comfortable (for a pump)! I also love long cardigans haha, and shorter ones too! Just depends on the proportions I’m going for. But I agree with you on so many other items, especially the black pencil skirt!

I love these types of videos. I LOVE pencil skirts but they don't fit my life anymore. When I worked in the corporate would they were a staple. But, now, I just don't wear them. I've tried on the Balmain blazer several times. It is LOVELY but it looks terrible on me. The shoulder pads just look insane on my small frame. And, it's way too formal for my current casual lifestyle. Not everything works for everyone and it's nice to hear people actually say it.😇

Oh MAN- I'm so happy that you gave a shout-out to Poléne! I just LOVE their bags. I also love Loewe, but I feel like Poléne bags are every bit as unique & well-made, at 1/4 of the cost! Personally, I just can't do plaid (unless it's flannel pajamas)- there are so many flannel shirts that look adorable on the rack, but they make me look like Paul(ette) Bunyan. ☹️

Hi Anna I completely agree on the bags with logos. So ugly and tacky to have loud logos on handbags. Unpopular opinion but I loathe LV as a brand and find the hand bags awful. I prefer Prada all the way as the craftsmanship is amazing and logos tend to be very minimal-definitely a classic brand. Love your content and thanks for being so funny and helping us ladies stay up on our style game! ❤

I bought a couple of blazers, plain t-shirts, and loafers because I love the look of them with jeans--but I've come to realize that I only really wear jeans on casual Fridays at work (Can't wear them there the rest of the week and I prefer dresses or dress pants on the weekends, and with this summer being so hot I haven't been able to wear any of it at all the past few months) so they're not getting a lot of wear out of me. Thank goodness I didn't spend a lot of money on any of it. I also bought a week's worth of dressy shorts for long-ish trips to Bali/Europe that I took this year. They worked fabulously there and during my occasional long weekend beach trips (which we do once or twice a year), but otherwise I don't really gravitate to any of my shorts. It seems kind of a waste to have a decent chunk of my closet space be for items that I only wear for trips. I'm trying to force myself to wear them at least one day per week this summer (which is a struggle since I'm not allowed to wear them at work either).

I retired from corporate America last year. I have always hated a cotton button up shirt, especially white. They turn my longish hair into massive snarls. I don’t wear blazers much. For me they feel restricting. Ballet flats are not very comfortable. I like shorts, skorts, skirts and dresses in summer with ribbed tanks, cotton tees and sleeveless. In winter my staples are knitwear, short jackets, joggers and some jeans. I know what the fashion community wants me to think i should wear. I am not buying in.

I’ve never been a ‘latest trend’ person! And I love the classic styles! While I admire innovation in clothing, I cringe at someone who is trying too hard to be stylish! Strips are beautiful on so many women, on me, NEVER! However, I have always been a lover of polka dots and pinstripe! As we age, we find certain styles that always bring the best to our life, and if our lifestyle changes we adjust to our situations! I swore when my children were babies that when they were out of diapers I would NEVER haul around hail around another huge bag! And I’ve kept my word, ever after becoming the caregiver to a great grand child! There are always alternatives and innovations!

I agree with most of these, but my goodness on the black pencil skirt. I don't work in corporate but wear mine with flats and sneakers and really "dressed down", and get compliments all the time. It's a knit fabric so maybe a bit less stuffy, but I think that maybe a different fabric other than suiting fabric makes a great deal of difference as to how you can dress it. I gave up on pumps in any colour and have never felt more "me" ... definitely not a wardrobe basic for everyone, and yes to the slingback, (especially the Chanel cap-toe, block heeled one) but not to the kitten heel! They bunch up my calves and I can't wear them for extended periods of time. Anything logo bedecked is a no-no...I feel like the brand should be paying ME to advertise their brand on MY bag. A tote is needed for busy people. I appreciate a roomy structured bag with zero logos. Polene is ah-may-zing. Great video!!
