The hamon is breathtaking, the effort on the stones is so slow but worth the sweat and blood. You are truly a artist Walter. Not just visible but functional.

Who ever pushed the thumbs down obviously doesn't know or understand a talented artist and his or her art when they see it. To you Mr Sorrells well done, and thank you for sharing your beautiful artistry to the you tube world.

Super cool video. I know it wouldn’t really blend with the melodic theme of this particular video, but I’d love to see this with a running hour meter in the corner for each stage. Like 8 hours, 21, hours, 168 hours, and so on.

The turbulent waves of the ocean represented in a hamon. The flickering flames of a coal forge come to life on a steel edge. The Ethereal Wind of the Japanese culture dancing on a blade. The spiritual ritual of the quench impregnated into forged metal. However you see it. Whatever it is. Masterful is the only description I can muster.

I must say I'm very happy to have stumbled upon your channel a few years ago, Your no B.S approach and super useful information is top notch! I've been making hunting knives for 2 years and watched all your videos. That Katana blade is awesome! If you don't mind me asking what type of steel did you used for the blade? Best regards Alex.

2:13 Wow, beautiful clay pattern. Not even remotely as easy as it looks. And the finished hamon is stupendous. Truly a labor of love. It curved a full inch ? Cool. That seems like why a perfectly even grind/geometry is vital to help prevent unwanted warping during quench ... it seems intuitive that a thicker area could locally alter the resulting curvature/warpage. Awesome montage of incremental refinement. First i've seen for a sword polishing. +1

I wish someone in the polishing community in Japan would consider kickstarting an online database of high resolution photos of historical Katanas and Tachi, and their measurements, so we could see and admire the incredible skill and artistry that went into their geometry, hamons, tip design, et al. Only a tiny fraction of people get to see such blades in a physical museum ... but a virtual internet museum would revolutionize and revitalize the craft and interest.

Does it make a difference to the curvature if you quench blade edge down or spine side down in to the tank?

While I did enjoy this, have you ever consider live streaming you making a katana? I’d watch probably all of the hours long. Or maybe stream portions of the build, like initial hammers, quenching, and the filing and the Quench. It’s still one of my dreams to eventually make a katana and I’d love to watch you work it out.

Wonderful visual transformation before our eyes! How many hours do you have in hand finishing this blade on stone? Do you use water or some other liquid when hand polishing? The finished blade is beautiful. Thank you.

Beautiful blade! The hamon is super nice! How thick is the blade after forging? In the beginning of the video it loocks so thin. Like only around 5mm (~ 3/16 inch) or so.
@-Tokay-
@-Tokay- 4 жыл бұрын
Katanas are thicker than 1/4" often at the spine before the taper. Even most tanto blades also exceed 3/16" at the thickest part of the spine. All typically well above 3/16" in thickness.
