I have been growing in my aquarium gardens a Wandering Jew plant (Tradescantia Zebrina), also known as the Inchplant or Spiderwort.
A nice looking plant you may recognize from my previous videos ;)
Here it is in my Zen Aquarium Garden • Zen Garden Heart
It grows fast!
Let's do some experiments to see if this plant is suitable for sustainable aquarium gardens.
I use a 1 liter mason jar with a lid to set up a new aquarium garden.
Let's put a rock and a seashell.
Add dechlorinated water. A Marimo ball, duckweed, and some Frogbits should do to start with.
Add a couple of pond snails.
Also, I add some seed shrimp.
A very basic setup as you can see.
Make a cutting of a Wandering Jew plant.
The leaves of this plant will rot in water very quickly.
So, let's trim off the bottom leaves.
I put the cutting in the aquarium garden on December 1st, 2019.
5 days later on December 6th, the cutting already has nice roots.
December 16th
Another 10 days passed and the roots reached the bottom.
Let's make a new cutting with the top 5 leaves.
This cutting goes in the same garden.
And now I am going to add 5-6 scuds into this nursery.
I want to check how scuds will survive in this aquarium garden without me feeding them • Gammarus in Aquarium
Scuds get busy right away checking the roots of the Wandering Jew plant and exploring the aquarium.
In my previous experiment, adult scuds prefer plants over algae.
Here they can choose from algae, Marimo ball, or the roots of Wandering Jew plant.
And snails or snail eggs!
January 2nd, 2020
It's been one month since I set up this garden.
New branches grow on the old cutting.
Snails and scuds are doing fine.
Scuds devour all small secondary roots of Wandering Jew plant.
No fluffy roots left, in other words.
Apparently, scuds love those.
It's time to add water.
Fill up a cup with cold NYC tap water and let it sit out in the open overnight.
The next day I add this water into the aquarium garden.
Make sure the tubes of the planter always stay above the water.
February 16th
In the past month, I made another cutting.
All three cuttings have strong roots and look good.
Now, I remove a bottom leaf of one cutting.
Let's cut the bottom part of the stem without leaves and push it in the aquarium.
I want to see what is going to happen to the leafless stem with roots underwater.
A scud rushes to chew on the young roots of this cutting right away.
March 4th 2020
Dots of common green algae grow on the walls of this 3 month old aquarium.
March 24th.
I make two cuttings from the old plant.
Let's put the old stem without leaves in the aquarium again.
One of the new cuttings is replacing the old plant.
And the other new cutting goes into another aquarium garden.
I usually try my experiments in more than one aquarium to increase the reliability of results ;)
May 19th.
All Wandering Jew cuttings seem to grow fine so far.
I think it's time to make a new cutting here.
The new cutting goes in the same aquarium garden.
I add dechlorinated water every couple weeks or so.
June 5th.
A half an year old aquarium garden looks good.
Scuds dashing here and there in larger numbers.
Snails are not so good.
Scuds leave not much food for snails to feed on and scuds eat snails eggs.
Also, pinkish water discoloration indicates that leaving the old stems of Wandering Jew in the aquarium is not a great idea in this regard.
Here you can compare it with the crystal clear water in the other aquarium where I did not add old stems.
This discoloration is permanent.
Which leaves me no other choice but to change the water.
First off all let's remove the old stems.
Now let's drain the water keeping scuds in the aquarium.
I drain out about 90% of the water.
Some scuds get sucked in the tube anyway.
I will put them back for sure.
Add clean dechlorinated water.
Let's move scuds back in the aquarium.
Now I am going to add some decorations, gravel and aquatic plants to make this aquarium garden look the way I like to keep it - attractive!
3 young ramshorn snails going in.
Snails have a better chance in aquarium gardens with more aquatic plants.
That's what I learnt from experiments in other aquarium gardens.
A cutting of guppy grass goes in this one.
6 months long experiment confirms sustainability of Wandering Jew aquarium garden with scuds.
July 2020.
Sustainable aquarium gardens with different plants look gorgeous • DIY Aquarium Flower Ga...
I am ready for new experiments.
Have fun and happy aquarium gardens :)

Thank you for the questions! Here is a playlist of all land plants that I've have tried so far: kzfaq.info/sun/PLM88hGt0AfGsMdX2OQFm1GoT35sPtKh__ How fast plants could grow depends heavily on many specific factors - type of plants, amount of available light, amount of available nutrition in the water / use of pumps as in for aquaponics and etc. The way I grow land plants with roots in water you may expect the plants do not bear flowers and steams tend to grow thinner and longer. All the best on your adventure!

I was looking for something new to add to my aquariums. I have some pothos going crazy growing with their roots in the aquarium but I just started some wandering jew in my other aquarium. How much of the stem needs to be underwater? With the pothos, you need to have one of the places the leaves attach to the stem underwater or it won't grow roots. Is it the same for wandering jew?
@4me
@4me 3 жыл бұрын
It is the same with cuttings of most plants I tried so far.

What do you need to do when the roots get too big to take the plant out of the hole? Do you trim the roots?
@4me
@4me 4 жыл бұрын
The hole is actually rather larger for the stem or roots of this plant to grow that thick/big. The way I keep my plants their roots never get too big for the hole. I make new cuttings and let them root. After that I remove the old plant keeping the new in.

Do you know why stems rot in water randomly? Some I can get to root and others will just rot from the stem and die in water.
@4me
@4me 2 жыл бұрын
I have similar experience with some of over an year old plants growing with roots in water and some cuttings made of those plants. I cannot say for sure, but I think that plants get weaker as time goes...the same way as people get weaker as they get older.
@LoHMysticAgent
@LoHMysticAgent 2 жыл бұрын
@@4me thanks. I watch a lot of your videos and see when you take new cuttings from your zebrina and place it in water, the stems don't rot. I have that issue when I do new cuttings. Some will take root while other fresh cuttings will rot completely. I think it might be my water.
@4me
@4me 2 жыл бұрын
@@LoHMysticAgent I use dechlorinated NYC tap water in all my aquariums - cannot say for sure anything about using other water for this purpose...well, on a couple occasions I used chlorinated water for setting up a new 1 liter aquarium gardens with snails (I did not make videos of those). Chlorine evaporates in matter of 24 hours. And the plants and snails were fine in those aquariums. My friends who I made those aquarium gardens for did not mention any problems even year after initial setup. Maybe water parameters/quality has something to do with the problem.

They need oxygen. Put an air stone in the jar
@LoHMysticAgent
@LoHMysticAgent 2 жыл бұрын
@@keon8219 I know, I use air stones but there are some that will just randomly rot. If they are fresh healthy cuttings then a majority of them will root but there will always be a few that will just rot. Other times I'll have perfectly healthy ones in water thriving and then one day roots just randomly rot with the stem, white the other remain healthy.

I've been duplicating your " guppy gardens" but my fish seem to rapid breathe like they aren't getting enough oxygen? With nothing moving the water, how are they getting enough oxygen? I have plenty of plants above and in the jars..also my nitrates are high, considering how many plants. And only 2 endlers or small guppies?
@4me
@4me 4 жыл бұрын
Make sure the narrowest side of the aquarium/jar is no less than 3 lengths of the fish. Larger fish has to be moved into larger aquarium. I breed a strain of dwarfs for this purpose...which took me about 4 years by now and it is still work in progress. It's always better start with younger possible fish - newborn seems the best in my opinion.

@@4me thanks for the advice. I will try the little ones first. All my jars are at least 1/2 gal to 1 full gal each. My fish are quite small, so I thought by making the jars big it would help. I love your little aquariums and enjoy having them myself. I have wild Gambusia out of the Tennessee here and have been collecting beautiful plants from the river . Until I watched your videos i never thought much about collecting from my surroundings instead of buying them. You would enjoy Florida where every water filled ditch or drainage pond has an amazing assortment of fish..we used to go netting alot when we lived there.
