Do you rember that video about health statistics in the UK and America, I will tell you that Americans are richer and can afford healthier food, education, therapy and healthcare. And Americans exercise more than British people. Americans definitely eat more proccesed food and fried food which is why they live longer.

Gavin & Stacey is a character-led, narrative comedy drama about 2 families from different cultures and how they rub up against each other. While ostensibly about the named characters, the real story is the writers' characters Smiffy and Nessa - a lager lout and fiery emo chick (to oversimplify). Brilliant, loveable and eccentric characters, created by the supporting cast, fill out the rest of the roster. Well worth a watch.

Totally agree with this, the principle of national healthcare is overwhelmingly supported in the UK, most people wouldnt want this to change but that doesn't mean it does everything well. In my experience the NHS does emergency care really well but less impressive with chronic illnesses and prevention (there is also an obvious postcode lottery with some things).

couldn't agree more. the NHS is pretty universally popular - but conservative governments (and Blair's labour) have tried to undercut it to facilitate privatization - which means it's running below its potential because it's underfunded, staff cuts, etc etc. and then certain quarters of the press (*cough* Murdoch *cough*) spin the narrative to suggest the NHS is crap and not fit for purpose. if it were properly run it would be spectacular. even not properly run it's pretty great.

@@sandersson2813 we in the UK are quite aware that the NHS isn’t free ...... we pay for it through our national insurance tax that is very affordable and the amount paid is proportional to the amount that you earn. Most people would be happy to pay more national insurance tax for a better NHS but you cannot trust the politicians to spend that extra money with prudence .... nearly everybody agrees that the NHS needs reforms from the top down but no system is perfect, the main thing is that we don’t need to worry about our health care and with the NHS there’s no expensive bills to pay for your hospital stay and treatment no matter how long it takes. So yes we understand that it’s not free ...... it just feels like it’s free because you don’t miss your affordable national insurance tax contributions .

I talked with an acquaintance who had been the Chairman of one of the Regional Health Authorities - responsible for dozens of hospitals. He told me that he had found it hard / impossible to get them to buy short life supplies on a 'as required' basis. Hence they were forever throwing away drugs and other supplies whose 'use by' date had expired. Another problem was the "Use it or lose it" approach that the Civil Service applies to budgets, which drives hospitals to use unspent money at the end of the financial year on 'something' that might be useful and ensures all the budget is spent. He described finding one hospital with thousands of beautiful bed sheets in stock as a result of such a budget spending splurge. What's not to like? Well the design of hospital beds changed after the purchase, so none of the sheets can be used, because they do not fit.

Regarding the NHS, one of the issues is the government of the day changing the NHS Management as this is cheaper than actually investing in the service (known internally as re-arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic rather than looking where you were going). As an example, during a 24 year period of employment at the local hospital the organisation I worked for changed 6 times while I sat at the same desk. Each time it changed, all the documentation had to be changed to reflect the new logo and/or title (after paying huge consultation fees for the new structure & graphic designing), Director level appointments would change with many of the incumbents moving on to other NHS organisations with compensation. Changes have included the NHS being split into 'purchaser & provider' units so that hospitals could compete against each other, the introduction of Hospital & Community Trusts.. This was to allow local groups to decide what was needed in their area (and the Govt to pass the buck). This led to more bureaucracy such as NICE National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence to reduce postcode prescribing & treatment availability. As well as the CQC Care Quality Commission introduced to ensure that standards were being met & maintained, This had been glossed over during the splitting of the NHS into smaller & smaller pieces.

On a winter's morning, two Weetabix sprinkled with sugar then hot milk poured in the bowl (not over the top of the Weetabix) is a joy to behold. You get the sweet crunch of the sugar and top of the Weetabix, then the warm cosy soft Weetabix underneath. Christmas pudding is vile. So is Christmas cake.

I agree with this. And while I also agree that the media and politicians have driven the increased tribalism, the very beginnings of it's resurgence can be traced to around Euro 96. It catapulted certain aspects of patriotism back into the mainstream consciousness and laid the overly-simplistic, reactionary, and juvenile groundwork of what modern nationalism is based on. If you don't belive there's a link look at how many nationalist groups are populated by people who identify as "football lads".

From 2001 to 2015 our largest customer was in the UK. I must have made 2 dozen business trips there over those years, however meals were almost exclusively in hotels and restaurants. That means I never really saw the "tea culture" thing as I could get either coffee or tea in the places where I dined. It's coffee for me (but I do like tea, I even have 2 boxes of Bigelow Assortment on my shelf). However, the alcohol thing (pub culture) is fairly obvious. The first time I noticed a major difference was at a sports bar on a day off. After spending several hours and many pounds on cocktails, I wondered why I was as sober as I was (the same amount of cocktails in the US would have left me hammered). When it came my turn to buy a round, I walked to the bar and noticed they measured alcohol like it was liquid gold. There were signs posted behind the bar that described the requirement for legal, calibrated measures and firm pricing for all alcohol and wine. Consequently, when those Brits visited the US, they were floored by bartenders "free pouring" (no measuring) their cocktails. If that didn't blow their minds, they lost all control when every 4th drink was free. I mentioned all of this to a British friend that lived in the US, and he said that the UK has a collective drinking problem that requires government regulation. That was weird to me.

I like the idea of the royal family video. Personally I like the royal family but only because I'm into history and I love the fact that our monarcy is so old to be respresents our history and old traditions. But I can totally see if someone wasn't into the monarchies history why they wouldn't like them. On a more personal level and not thinking about their history or what they represent to me, I'm not too fussed about them. Though I also like the fact they stay out of our politics and I would quickly turn against the monarchy if she tried to mess around in our politics, thankfully that hasn't happened, unless they want to be kicked out of power. We've kicked them out of power before in the 1600s, (then the guy who took charge Oliver Cromwell was a dick so we got the monarchy back lol) we can do it again, if the monarch tries to use any of her political powers. Case in point the last time the monarch refused royal assent was in 1708 (assent of the sovereign to a Bill which has been passed by Parliament, and which thus becomes an Act of Parliament)

I mean I disagree I also like the Queen and agree that a head official getting involved in parliamentary decisions wouldn't be the greatest However technically you cannot dispute her rule everyone can say they would revolt or cause havoc but in reality she owns the army the economy the laws and still has execution powers even If not used... just because its frowned upon doest mean it will never be used again its a monarchy for a reason a monarchy has absolute power regardless of how many oppose. The Crown is main embodiment not so much the person wearing it... the crown is a symbol of power from god himself which is worn by somebody I.e the queen who gives and authorities power through god and nobody is more powerful than God and no I am not a Christian but I do believe that this is fairly true and right.... She is top figure of the country the army the economy and the politics the prime minister even though he seems like he is the main person in charge or the goverment the uk is still in law a ruled monarchical Country. If she owns everything the simple question if she did meddle in politics how would you even stop her??... you genuinely can't even if you wanted to 1 man vs an army backed by a powerhouse economy with powers beyond the thinkable or the imaginable She can fire all politicians in the parliament and replace them same with the army navy and possibly even court justices.... and she can even fire the prime minister of Canada Australia and New Zealand and more and yes it would cause alot of issues and maybe massive uprising but if need be she still has the power to do so and mostly like ignored but if she kept true to enforcing her power it would do alot of harm but she has the right to do so she is the queen.. Canada is independent but still is under rule of a monarchy the queen just the queen doesn't interfere with politics especially outside UK because of the distance but she could if she really wanted too..

Yes they swore an oath but you seriously believe that soldiers with their families in mind and people they care about in mind believe a pure monarchy is better than a democracy? So no she actually doesn’t have that power, despite it being an oath but if you seriously think that soldiers want a pure monarchy for the people they care about and their families I think you’ve got another thing coming. Considering that, no she doesn’t actually have the army under her control as the majority will turn against her if she tried to use them to take over unless she was doing for a good reason and the public also agreed with the take over or something like that.

@@pipercharms7374watch "why we should choose Monarchy" by Noah Wiener and read below I mean she already has the queen's guards. They are allowed to kill on sight anyone that poses a threat to the Queen or to them... that alone Is a private army and if you meant national army half the country supports the monarchy while half do not at worst case scenario she will still have support of at least 6-10m people if not more as for democracy its just an ideal its not really effective many cases when it's comes to goverment economically or politics democracy is semi effective while has many upon many issues.. a monarchy does not. Even talking about it now the queen is yaying or naying legislation which is bought to her from parliament just saying yes or no is basically having a say in politics Look at america today big fan of them to them but there country is no offence utterly in a deep cluster it can't get out of. Usa is pure democratic country and majority normality there is riots anarchy invading the Senate and violence. Compared to UK monarchy UK is doing better off. Even in Asia democracy is failing. Imagine all the Races Nationals and Ethnicitys of The entire UK all going at each others throats or an entire Country of countries people working together and helping each other without trying to beat or be better than the other... a country or nation that stands together is better In many ways to a nation divided into tens to hundreds. A monarchy is important to keep stability and they support and help everyone under there rule not to put it bluntly... aslong as monarchs rule as head of state its a good thing. As there is no anti people ripping the country to part... we just went through brexit half the country agrees half the country didn't agree thats the cause of democracy imagine no main person on top of that it would most likely end up like a civil war. The labour or conservatives can say they will do this that and the other but in the end it comes down to queen's decision and if the queen disagrees then they have to go back and make a better act. Without a queen the elected prime minister could just slap any law he want down if it got through it would be implemented. And with 50% support its 50/50 I don't mind if this make me seem "silly" but comparing data and statistics.. I would prefer to keep a monarchy than see a nation further divided by politics

@@wNeDbYStn I am not sure what you are trying to argue with me here on the last statement? I never said I didn’t want the monarchy. If you are arguing that the majority think a pure monarchy would be better than a democracy then I’ll simply have to disagree with you there . I support our constitutional monarchy not if we had a pure monarchy, though if that’s what you are arguing with me about?

The "Marmite - love it or hate it" thing was an advertising ploy by the company in the 1980s. Some people DO love it and some people DO hate it, but I suspect most people (like me) think it's okay and can take or leave it.

I like to drink beer with a great flavour. I drink with people who drink the cheapest beer, which is usually insipid. My current favourite is actually an American craft beer called Shipyard, which is brewed in the UK by a company which has forged links with an American brewery so they can brew and sell each others beers. Shipyard is on draught in Wetherspoons and is thus also cheap at about £2.85 a pint. I relish every sip of this delicious beer, and I have no understanding of my pal who drinks Coors Light because it's the cheapest lager.

I cannot stand coffee, and make tea properly in a teapot with Yorkshire Tea. However, my sister has always hated tea, and only drinks coffee. But she’s a Canadian now (officially) after moving to Canada in 1993.
