Do you want to start a firewood business for profit? Is there money in selling firewood? Can you earn an income or a few extra bucks on the side as a side hustle? I've been selling firewood in the woodyard since 2010, so here's a few pointers on what you'll need to know to pursue this business endeavor or how to make some extra cash.
I discuss:
Customer base: indoor heating, outdoor burning, cooking/smoking
Supply: (tree service wood, log delivery, forest harvesting)
Equipment: chainsaws, log splitters, firewood storage ideas
Income: productivity vs. profit

Great topic Anthony. I sell bundles only and it's not a big money maker, but I have very limited space. I just enjoy processing the wood and selling it. The little money I make I'm using to reinvest to buy better equipment to be more efficient and make a little more money. Love the videos, keep them coming!

I've been doing firewood for about 6 yrs, though a much smaller scale. Principles still the same, terminology different. Best thing I did to settle volume disputes was build a trailer that measures out to exactly 128 cubic feet. Customer can take all the measurements they want and it will always come out to 128 cubic feet. That way there's no argument.. take it or leave it.. for convenience both sides come off, and the back also. Great info. K

I sell firewood part time in the SW US. Lots of cedar, piñon, and ponderosa pine in my area. Dry/dead cedar is scarce but there is plenty of dry piñon from forestry cuts. Most of my sales go back to bills and getting by.. can't afford an automated splitter and the truck needs maintenance. But I do enjoy it when I get the time, I recently started getting back into sales and wish I kept it going sooner. Could've had plenty of seasoned firewood by this time. But your videos have given me plenty of insight and motivation to keep it going. Thanks 💪🏽

Thanks, I always hated the ugly stuff as a firewood perfectionist. I wish I lived at a place with a wood boiler so i could burn all my waste heat with it. I forgot to mention that I give away my sawdust for free. Yes inget free wood, but I have a slow splitter, but sometimes I bust out the maul axe and the smoker wood release helps offset the labour

No problem. I provided some universal principles because everyone's business is different. Find out the customer base and what they want, and buy the best splitter you can afford and match the style of the splitter to conform with the type of wood supply that you're getting and make it full circle by getting supply that your customer base needs

I keep the perfect wood for the cities customers and other not so perfect 16s go green to a farmer at discount. Denser wood at that. I fprgot to mention in the video that I even give my sawdust away as compost

@@OntarioFirewoodResource This is a good time to expand firewood and equipment because of the high price of energy. Wood is good for emergency fuel. The Eastonmade Ultra has a 4-second cycle time and a 4-way knife. A person probably needs acres for a good business.

The thing is, I live in the city where people don't use wood for heat, they us it for fun. Sales were slow this winter. Cities tend to be expensive, especially mine, so that means money has rmto go to bills in a bad economy rather than for fun with firewood

@@OntarioFirewoodResource That is an important point that I had not considered. I am not sure you were writing to me because my name is not in your comment. There is a revolutionary form of wood heat developed by Walker Stoves. You can get a plan for this stove and build it. They are more efficient and smoke much less. I am curious of the size of your woodyard and the cord volume of your business but that would be a little off the subject. Thanks.

@@jakebredthauer5100 yes it was for you. I'll check out that design. I have a huge wood stove in my shop across the street. I sell between 20 and 35 full cords seasoned, 3 to 4 cords smoker wood chunks amd 3 to 4 40 yard bins (6 cords each) of green wood. So overall, I sell 50 ton65 full cords per year. I have about 3/4 acre. I could probably hold up to 60 full cords in there if I had more caves amd all wood is stacked properly inside

@OntarioFirewoodResource
@OntarioFirewoodResource Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes stacking wood in crates saves room but does take more time. If I had the space and more crates. Iz fill them loose. Stacking is good enough for one year seasoning. If some is not dry by the next year, let's say fall, you can put it aside to burn or sell in 2 to 4 months' time. Stacking in crates helps calculate volume better,this really helps with the business

I been doing Firewood for 12 can you give me advice about the Business
@OntarioFirewoodResource
@OntarioFirewoodResource 2 ай бұрын
Sure. Know your market and who's buying what. Try to make the most money on your product, whether it's selling single species orders, smoker wood, firewood bags (smaller quantity = higher pay. Stack wood on pallets for easy loading, with easy access for a vehicle if you are doing a lot of deliveries. Buy the fastest splitter you can, but make sure it matches the wood you get. I would love to have any of the eastonmade horizontal splitters, but I sometimes get large diameter and a lot of crotch wood, knotty wood, stuff that isn't smallish diameter and nice and straight so the vertical eastonmade axis is better for me. Delivering and stacking can bring in a lot of extra money. Make sure you know what wood you have so that you are not selling junk. Handle the wood as little as possible and have your processing done by machinery as much as possible
