I'm convinced that investing $50k-100k in the right company before it goes big is more important than saving for retirement. However, picking the right company is so hard that saving might be safer, cuz who would've guessed Nvda? I have around $200k in a HYSA and want to invest. What are the best opportunities now?

I believe investors should start with S&P 500/ETFs for a solid foundation, then diversify across asset classes and maintain disciplined, regular investing to minimize risks and maximize growth.

For someone starting with $200k, begin with S&P 500 ETFs, diversify across asset classes, and invest consistently to minimize risks and maximize growth. Partnering with a financial advisor can help streamline your strategy. This approach turned $80k into $53,000 in annual dividends.

SPY, QQQ, and SCHD are my 3 core holdings, and I sell covered calls and cash secured puts on SPY and QQQ in my IRA to generate more income and maximize effective return. The other 25% I pick stocks and ETFs that I have time to research and follow extremely well. Going into 2024 with an expected lower interest rate environment I like some clean energy stocks (solar and energy storage are highly subsidized and sensitive to interest rates), semiconductors and Bitcoin (ETF expected to be approved next month by SEC may be a catalyst). Do your own homework. Good luck in 2024 all.

ETFs are the backbone of my portfolio. However, I have positions in dividend stocks as well and the reason for that is that I have an aversion to buying anything near highs. So let’s say PG or PEP or KO or WMT are near 52-week lows, I scoop those up. This is how I keep myself from essentially averaging up and how i navigated the recent bear market without taking a hit. I was down as much as 13% at one point, but never more than that, even when SPY hit $330. I think it’s a solid strategy. VOO, VGT, VTI and the such are too high right now. I’m up over 10% on all of those positions

Me too, wish I had known about them sooner. I had Moderna stock as my first investment. 22 bucks a share, and I had 100 shares. It went up to almost 500 a share at one point. 😳 I unfortunately cashed out early, I still sold it at like 70 bucks a share and cashed out a nice payout. But I missed out on life changing money. But I had no choice at the time, my gf lost her job and I had to pay all the bills. Otherwise, I would have held onto it longer. After that, I started doing some crypto and made some money on doge coin and shiba inu. But I wish that whole time I would have known more and just started doing etfs right away. Now I am 40 and have a lot less time to save for retirement.

Some of us don't want to work fulltime until 65 years of age, your 401k will get there, but rule of thumb is you don't invest in 401k until debt free, for most Americans if you play your cards right, that's around your early to mid 30s, if you decide to get married and have children, that raises the age to your late 30s early 40s, where your only debt is your home, so that leaves you with 25 years to come up with enough capital, to live off your investments, in 25 years and with inflation, you would need at least 70k a year, to accommodate for health ins, home ins, transportation and goods, and thats if your primary residence is paid for. With funds like VOO and schd you would need to invest close to 1 million dollars per fund to get a dividend return to keep you out of poverty, the triple Qs might help the portfolio, but your added an extra cost since the fund runs in cycles, as other have said the best way to play the Qs is do CC, but your going need some capital to purchase the funds, If you wanted to sell 10 contracts of the Qs you would need over 400k. There is nothing wrong or right mindset, its about the end goal and how we get there, I'm 53 so I will choose alternative routes to get me there in 2 years than in 25 years.

Can you do a deep dive into dividend investing vs indexing investing with a twist- these are the variables- would like to find the difference- 2 accounts- one a 401k pretax account, other is post tax Roth IRA. $10k invest each for both accounts and since you are a proponent of SCHD- run the numbers against SPY for 10 or 20 years- use DRIP investing, taxed at 15% with inflation at 3%, and the twist is bulk invest $10k on Jan 1 AND invest $1000 every month for 10 or 20 years. I ran the numbers myself and SPY came out FAR SUPERIOR. I also did with JEPQ. Also, at retirement, how will RMD affect each of these accounts- I think this will help many people watching make a better informed decision because this takes into bulk investing and do DCA.

Could you discuss the pros and cons of etf vs index fund in a taxable brokerage account? Ie currently I hold FXAIX in both my Roth and my brokerage, but it’s been repeatedly suggested that I swap out FXAIX in my taxable account for VOO, however that also comes with a slightly higher expense ratio. Thank you

Hey Nolan, Love the channel and I'm super interested in ETF investing. I have a question regarding a potential ETF investment strategy which is simply DCAing into two ETF's monthly but inclusively investing in the lowest performing one. Let's take the $SPY and $QQQ for example. I would split my current portfolio between the 2 and then add to the ETF that has gone up the least or gone down the most during the previous month. I just want to know if there is a way to test this ETF strategy to see how it would have performed over the last 5,10 and 15years. Are you aware of any tools that would allow me to do this?

For dividend income would it be better to just invest in SDHC or would i still be better off doing like 60% voo and 40% sdhc. I also have some stock in Moderna, microsoft, some in QQQ and some in VYM.

Excellent Video! I was wondering, if I define a goal to try to quarterly outperform the S&P500, do you think this is achievable though an all ETF portfolio through careful choosing of the etfs? or is it more interesting to understand the stock market and look for opportunities there while keeping in mind the added risk? I ask this because since im in my early twenties my risk tolerance is still quite "high" allowing me to add more risk to my portfolio

I was wondering if I should have more than one of these in my portfolio or just stick with the three only? As well as, should I have these same one's only in my brokerage or my roth ira? I currently have these same 3 ETF in both and wasn't sure if this may be a mistake as I could just max it out in one or the other. Thank you for the great videos!

Hi there! You can totally just have one of each or you can have multiple, it really depends on what YOU want. As far as holding the same thing in different types of investing accounts, yes you can definitely have the same thing in both (I do)

Hello Professor G! I love watching your videos, keep up the great work! I have a question: what % of your portfolio is allocated on crypto rn? After watching your interview video on BTC I bought the recommended book and am planning on allocating some of my own portfolio into BTC again. I had a terrible experience in the past bc I lost some money on Celsius... Which made me kind of give up on crypto and take a step back only focusing on ETFs and stocks.

Kinda late for this question but if you are still answering any quickly, here’s one: How would I give a Xmas gift that involves an investment account with a starting balance of $500 invested in stocks and $500/yr around Xmas to my 18 year old kid and should it be in an IRA or a Roth if it is post-taxed funds?
@charlielipthratt7291

If they have earned income from a job, helping them fund their Roth IRA is the best. Explaining stock market ups and downs and giving them money is a wonderful gift. Getting them excited about saving for retirement is huge at that age. I think the ballpark number is $20k invested by 18 years old is apprx 1 million when they are 65. And everything they put in the Roth will be tax free.

@@charlielipthratt7291 right…I was thinking of the 500 as their income rather than as a gift. Thanks! I was also wanting something they couldn’t touch for awhile but if there was ‘excitement’ about investing for retirement, self motivation would be the best deterrent to cashing it out early. Hopefully my brimming excitement will be contagious! There’s the Doomsday spending lifestyle that many kids have nowadays.

Regarding the How part of your question, contact Schwab or Fidelity, and help your kid set up a Roth account. They can walk you through setting it up online if they do not have an office near you. Then, your kid will be set up on a very secure platform where they can grow significant wealth without having to transfer to a larger company later.

@NolanGouveia how do you feel about SPLG vs VOO? I invest with Schwab and can't purchase fractional shares of ETFs only whole shares. SPLG appears to track very similarly to VOO at a much cheaper price per share. Looking to see what you think as using SPLG as a foundational ETF versus VOO. Thanks for the help.

For the scenario of DCAing out of a fund and going to a dividend fund, does it make sense to buy the dividend fund on the day of the dividends fund ex div date since the price normally goes down on the ex div date?

Tne problem is that when the market corrects 50% and stays down for thirteen years. That occured from 2000 to 2013. Bonds did better in that time frame. I experienced the corrections of 1989,2000,2008 and 2020. Another correction is coming soon.

I have $22k split between a Roth, and a sep, in mutual funds, stocks, and schd. The 4 or 5 stocks are all down and have been, so I think I just need to dump them anyways. Schd is in the Roth. If I want to grow the Roth as much and as quickly as possible with drip, would it make sense to put everything into schd, rather than split it with other etfs? Thanks!
