Want to build your own grazing operation? Here is your list of what you don’t want to do. There are a lot of items that folks mistakenly invest in when they first buy a farm. This video goes over the most common mistakes folks make. For more grazing info check out my new book " How To Think Like A Grazier" on our website: greenpasturesfarm.net/books/

I just wanted to say thank-you, Greg. I've watching many of your videos over the last few years and I've built my farm infrastructure very similar to what you've recommended. Timeless fence posts, high tensile wire, powerful energizer, ¾" HDPE water-pipe, Jobe float valves, etc. Anytime I call to order things I usually say "well, Greg Judy brought me here so I know ya'll must be good." I raise Katahdin sheep, and feel very confident about my operation knowing I've chosen things that are the best bang for the buck but also knowing I can rest easy knowing they are reliable.

Thanks again for all your videos! I need to build fence here this spring. I can’t wait to get started building fence. I love my timeless fence post too. I was walking in my corn field the other day to see what is coming up. I planted some cover crops last fall so I would have feed for my animals to graze. The cover crops were about 1” high. I was so excited to see it. This will be turned into pasture this year or next. It depends on how well everything goes. We got some rain today but it’s going to turn into freezing rain then snow and sleet. It’s a little muddy here but it will be frozen soon. The biggest question I have to figure out is watering my animals. I have a plan but I’m always thinking on what to make it work the best.

Speaking of who to listen to and learn from. Some of the best Innovative information that I have found first KZfaq. Some of those things have led me to search for books with more detail. Also as you drive around your area look at the animals in the field and you'll see that some are pretty desolate and others look good. Speak to the people that have the better-looking land and animals and you can get a lot of local applied information. And a definite plus is that if you help them they may help you when you need it right on your land.

Been putting down hay the last two years now. Got a application of nitrogen last summer. No rain until after the growing season. Hope to have an appreciable turnaround in my brooms hedge situation this year.. will also benefit from a seedling from the hay laid down. My question is for the winter. I have minimal fescue. Most of it, as well as my neighbors farm’s fescue is from what the county laid down along the road with some gradual encroachment from there. My question is two years into the process will some broadcast frost seeding be of benefit? And if I choose to seed by this method would something like Kentucky 32 Fescue be better, perhaps a way lot better?

@@gregjudyregenerativerancher I have a well and a seasonal creek but it’s been very dry lately in California, we haven’t gotten more then 15 inches of rain over the last 10 years vs the 27-30 that we need to not be in a drought. It’s very difficult to get permits to build a pond in Napa, CA therefore I was thinking of putting water tanks in strategic locations and running poly pipe around the perimeter fence in order to get water to various locations. My property burned in 2020 as well in the LNU fires and that’s why I worry about using timeless fence posts because I don’t want them to burn and melt and I lose my fence. I am trying to regenerate the land and build a connection with the county to show them that we can fight the fires and the drought with good animal management and regenerative grazing but I have to figure out the fencing first because of the fires and the water need.

Greg you should be explaining about low-impedance Chargers. Which basically is a longer pulse with one hell of a snap. You won't forget it believe me. One time I was using a machete to cut weeds around a post. And I touched it with my machete and I almost lost that machete. It went in the air about 50 ft. It was funny later on when I think about it. But it wasn't funny when it happened. I thought I blew my arm off.

Thanks for sharing this. I may have missed it in the video. But what does your perimeter fencing infrastructure look like? I have some experience adaptive grazing and I’m going to be taking a job soon with a custom grazing outfit mananging a few hundred head of stockers on leased ground. There’s no fences at all. Which is going to be a big project before the animals arrive. On the perimeter are you running 5 maybe 4 wire high tensile wire on steel T posts? And splitting the pastures with poly wire? You mentioned timless fencing system, how does that compare to old fashioned steel t posts with wooden braces?

Plastic insulators get brittle with the sun over the years and now you have a wreck on your hands. All you have them is steel post ground rods covering your whole farm. Use Timeless non conductive Fenceposts and enjoy life with no electric fence shorts on your farm ever again. We leased a farm that had steel fence posts and plastic insulators on it. This system had been installed for 8 years. Every single night I was out there with my headlamp chasing down the latest insulator to fail and found the wire resting against a steel post.

I wish all the best for the new farmers that they find mentors in their zones to help them on their journey. The best way to make a small fortune is to start with a large one. Perhaps before jumping in learn to make do with what you have and not aspire to the perfect learn to do without all the bells and whistles mend stuff use it up and do with out if you don't have a real need . There's a saying that you can have a good fence but there is also something called open range. And that better be explained a little bit better. Then I'll help you also but you still don't want to neglect your fences. And I would suggest not just putting up a Hotwire to protect your barbed wire fence. Maybe take out the barbed-wire fence and put up all electric. Otherwise you're running around the farm trying to find out where the short is.
