Great video. Agree that Ego is not your Amigo. You nailed it. I spent an extra hour polishing some swirls for my brother in laws truck as a free add on for family and the only thing he noticed was a dirty door jamb I missed. Lol.

Door jams are one of the most important things too. They are the very first thing people see (well most dont actually see them but are revealed) when opening the door.

Always so much value packed into these vids. Every time my phone is ringing in middle of a detail and I try to tell myself I’m too busy to answer, I hear Yvan telling me to answer my damn phone. And its true that almost every time I take a message and call back, they’ve “already found someone else”

As someone who's detailed for 40 yrs now I can see some of the gems in this video and I can also see things that are mentioned that simply won't work in all market and all shop. I see my detailing shop as the same as my house cleaning company that ran from 1973-Cov era when no one wanted to work. It's also the same as a shop that repairs cars. Sometimes the customer HAS to wait, I understand that and so do they. In an ideal world in a huge shop with lots of employees in larger cities sure, I can see the value in most of what Ivan is saying, but it would never work in my shop, but it has worked for me for 40 yrs. SO I guess what I'm saying is don't let the info here get you down as a small shop owner you can be successful without all the points made here. Thanks for the videos guys I appreciate them even if I don't agree fully. :)

I’m working on starting my own mobile detailing business. I still remember working for an old detailing shop as a teen. We used windex for cleaning everything, and cheap, greasy protectant for the interior. Owner still has 5 stars to this day, and charges 2K for a “full” detail…. Hopefully my business (that I know is already better) is successful.

Great points Yvan, Too much perfection can be an imperfection by simply going overkill when in most cases perfection its not required. I love Yvan's deep knowledge about all things detailing. Thanks guys. Keep it coming. 👍

This was so interesting and I will take away from this many things so thank you. The thing I found most interesting was whenever I drive I do two things the first is whenever I cross a bridge I always look at the river if I can and imagine I have my fishing rod and where I would put my fly. The second thing is I look out for smart cars and since taking up detailing five years ago I notice whether the paint has been protected if it is wet and if dry whether the car is detailed or not. I guess this passion gets into our DNA. Thanks again to the two of you for bringing this to my attention I feel better there are others out there that are the same as me.

Yvan’s comment about the client going though the car wash after the paint correction reminded me of one of my clients, which is one of the major manufacturers. After making the car look all shiny and good I asked where it was off to and was told that it was going on display for two weeks, and was then going to be crushed as it didn’t meet Australian design rules and couldn’t be driven on the road! Detailing time well spent 😂

Another great video! I had a call earlier that was my neighbor who was at the dealership closing a deal for his nephew. He asked me how quickly I can coat the new car before his nephew drives it back home. I told him bring it to me as soon as you leave dealership and I will get it back to him either the same day or first thing in the morning. When we had our retail business we always answered the phone.

Asking a customer 'why' they want a detail or what is a 'detail' can get all kinds of shocked looks from my experience. Sometimes it is a bit hard to get that conversation rolling with them so that you can understand how the care for the vehicle and what they really think is a 'detail'.

I have had my busyness for 13 months now. I finally have two guys that help out from time to time and I'm starting to better understand the leverage of employees. I'm making more money but I am still kind of just making it. A lot of my clients come from networking and in person tabling events as well as word of mouth and Google. What do I need to be considering while looking at bringing a solid person on to the team. I have a bookkeeper coming on to help me understand the finances as well as an HR person to help me develop onboarding ect. I've also been playing with some larger opportunities like working at businesses and taking on fleets. I just feel like I can only do so much so I need to leverage a larger team.

That s exactly what we should avoid: do what we pretend to do and not what the customer wants. A friend of mine want to give me his Volvo V40 black metallic. I know what he wants: gloss and shine, but i started to show him swirls only visible under the lights. He mantains very well the car that has no deep scratches at all, no bad swirls, non rids, nothing..... So, till now i was not sure how many steps to do, cause i don t want to lose time and he can t leave the car at my garage. Now i m focused on a One step finishing step with rotary rather than removing unvisible scratches and leave the surface 95% perfect with unnecessary DA wool or foam cut step (even if i Will do a spot test for sure cause i don t know how the Paint reacts etc etc). What i mean Is that you clarified tò me that we should keep It simple, earn time and efficiency, and First of all abandon our ego in saying "i want to show him a perfect car!" Specially cause this Will complicate everything, make spend much more time, and STRESS a lot cause we pretend Always higher and higher and higher targets from ourselves that have nothing to see with the car's owner. Great consideration, Nick and Yvan. Thanks a lot for your videos

How does the average detailer get to that elusive $100/hr? I see far too many young detailers undercharging to the point that they’re probably barely making a profit if not breaking even.
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial Жыл бұрын
A few things, first is efficiency, second is actually charging what your service is worth. Finally don’t worry about what others charge. The Rolls Royce dealership doesn’t have a staff meeting to discuss lowering prices when Chevrolet puts the Trax on sale.
