yes i agree however if the piano or recording eqpt is bad then it doesn't matter how you play it always sounds bad upright pianos never sound as good as a grand and if out of tune or acoustics in room are bad then waste of time

Oooo, I like that- stop relying on your teacher to fix your mistakes. I always lament that I don't have a teacher, so its forced me to try and fix my own problems. I have also started recording myself over the last year, and it has helped immensely.

Josh, this advice is simply, one of the GREATEST advice I have ever gotten from you! After watching this, I pulled out my Silver Yeti mic and started recording myself. It was insane, the amount of tiny little mistakes I made that would've been so obvious to the audience yet inaudible to me when I am playing. Oh man, I wish I had started recording a LONG time ago, this is something so amazing and I've never even thought of it. Thank you Josh, love your videos!

It proves ones again how much harder it was to become great pianist in the past, when you had no recording devices, couldnt't listen to your own records or to records of great pianists to have an example, had no smartphones with musical applications to study outside your home etc.

This is so true Josh. I record once a week but yesterday realised after my Skype lesson with Stephie Koulouris in Greece that I need to record every day - she should could hear something that I could not. If you can't hear it you can't fix it. Thank you for your erudite videos - to me they seem to reveal the secrets that performing pianists seem to have.

I'm glad that you're pointing out the value of recording oneself, it is particularly important for self-taught students, but also for those who never listen to themselves because "I have my teacher who tells me what to do". I find it very frustrating in the beginning, when all kinds of faults in a piece pop out, but also rewarding later on, when you find that even if you still make mistakes, you can convey the overall intention.

Totally agree, recording myself has made a huge difference. I'm a 45-year-old beginner/intermediate trying to get back into piano after many years not playing. The first thing I noticed when I listened to recordings of myself playing was how HARD I was hitting the keys, without even noticing I was doing it. It sounded like I was playing with a pair of hammers instead of my hands... so I went back and made an effort to soften my tone, and it not only sounded better, it actually forced me to relax and slow down, which helped with sight reading. I use a simple free app on my phone to record, and the quality is not great but it works well enough for my purposes.

I find advice like this to be only applicable to advanced students, because it assumes that you already have all the tools fix the mistakes you’re hearing. A majority of students know the biggest mistakes their making, the struggles lies in actually developing the dexterity to not make them. We need more videos about this

Great video... great tips... In the beginning a lot of students don't know what to look for. You check your sheet music to find wrong notes or uneven rhythm but usually overlook them. Unless you are familiar with a piece, you can usually find a recording online. Anybody should be able to get to the point of not relying on a teacher most of the time. Sometimes you get stuck. Your teacher looks at your hand once and tell you the things you're doing wrong. A while back someone in the family went to a Gr.1 conservatory exam. 2 weeks before, she recorded several versions of the "Minuet in G" but not once the year before. Don't think she had goals or expectations how far she would go. The lessons dragged on for a while before she finally quit.

Josh, this lesson was such a powerful revelation for me! Observing your discussion of striving to achieve the softest possible expression, I was so excited to play a whole piece keeping the dynamic between p and ppp. Chose Chopin Nocturne in Em, OP72-1. Recorded with a cathedral reverb. It deeply soothed my soul while I played, but listening back, I was astounded. The sound was so completely unlike anything I have ever done. Like a special dream in which I fantasize that I am at last creating the beautiful, ethereal sound I set out so many years ago to accomplish. But, with the help of your inspiring instruction, it wasn't a dream!

I've started recording some of my practicing in the last couple weeks. I quickly saw how my posture needed improving and I've toned down some of my idiosyncrasies which could detract from my performance either at a recital or an exam. The device I use to record myself is the same computer and the same spot I use for my Zoom lessons. I simply go to the 'Camera' app (Windows 10) and record. Very easy and super beneficial!

Self critique is useful in any profession. It's far more discouraging to review a recorded vocal session :) For recording an upright piano, is setting a recorder (Zoom h4n) on the lid or music stand OK, or is there a better location? Great video and wonderful advice as always.
@foobargorch
@foobargorch 6 жыл бұрын
I'm neither a pianist or sound engineer, but in my experience it's hard to get a balanced sound from an upright if it's too near. The h4n has condenser mics, so it should be well suited to recording from a distance. Extremely up close to a surface (like up to 2-3 cm from a closed lid) with a directional microphone you will also experience the so called proximity effect, which boosts the bass end. Another reason to avoid the lid is vibrations. I'd also avoid a music stand but that's because I'm a klutz ;-)

Thank you, that helps a lot. I'll try resting the recorder on a chair back a few meters.

Kent VanderVelden I have this same mic, place it 6 to 8 feet from the piano because it takes some distance for the sound to fully shape itself. Too close and you'll miss some of the highs and pick up hammer noise and vibrations, too far and you'll pick up only higher notes. Make sure you disable all the filtering in the mic (compression, low pass cut off, etc) Finally use headphones when you listen... What he doesn't mention in this video, it's incredibly valuable to load the file into something like audacity on a computer and slow down the playback

This blurb is from Brendel's website, section Life & Career, subsection Self Taught, and is apparently taken from a BBC production about him called Alfred Brendel - Man & Mask (which I'm going to watch now): "A teacher can be too influential," he feels. "Being self-taught, I learned to distrust anything I hadn't figured out myself." More valuable than teachers was listening to other pianists, conductors and singers - and himself. Presented with a Revox tape-recorder (now an antediluvian machine but still in working order), Brendel learnt by recording the piece he was studying, listening to himself and reacting to it. "I still think that for young people today this is a very good way to get on," he says, "and it makes some of the functions of a teacher obsolete."

thank you, very informative! A question: I haver recorded myself a (and plan to do) quite a number of times, with the purpose of putting the recording/film on KZfaq. However, I experience quite a tension when I know I am recording myself, being nervous to make mistakes, esp. in parts that Ifind difficult, or going to the end if I played the piece without mistakes that far. My idea is that the recording is useless if there is a mistake, so you can start all over again. Of course I know that you can manage mistakes sometimes using comupter software and editing, e.g. in Audacity. But I prefer not to use this solution to much or better not at all. How to control or accept this feeling (which is obviously the result of perfectionism)?

I have a Roland DP90 electronic piano. The purists object, but it pretty accurately simulates an acoustic piano. It has an escapement movement, and the software simulates resonance (e.g., if you press a key without sounding it, then play something above it, the note pressed sounds a harmonic). It also has a stronger bass than you'll find in any upright and most grands. And of course, recording and playback are built it. You can copy a recording onto a USB stick as an MP3 file and I think Midi as well. Much cheaper than a grand + fancy recording equipment, light and easy to move around, never needs tuning. There are newer and better models for around $2,400, but the DP90 has been discontinued and can be had online for something like $1,300. Even if you already have a grand, it's a relatively small investment. What do you think?

Great presentation and playing. I thought the "D" was slightly off. Is that my default that is off (from playing guitar) - is the piano in need of a tweak - or is it an idiosyncrasy of they way we tune instruments and the intervals you used, causing it to sound microscopically off? I know guitar can never be 100% accurate and wondered if my internal; values of intonation are slightly off.

That's funny you mention people don't record themselves enough. I'm the exception. I'm obsessive about recording myself. I have used both video and audio to record dancing, gymnastics and music for as long as I have been doing them. It's a way for me to see or hear what I'm doing in order to correct myself. In fact, I need to just be confident and know that I don't need to always verify my performance or abilities. That being said, most people should do it more.

Josh, could you comment on muscle memory vs real memory, if that makes sense?
@epicdanny9

There's no such thing as muscle memory, if it feels like you're playing from your "muscle memory" that means you're probably not fully focused. You should slow down your piece and put all your concentration into your playing and you should be able to figure out where you're messing up and where you can improve your piece.

Muscle memory has been used synonymously with motor learning, which is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition. When a movement is repeated over time, a long-term muscle memory is created for that task, eventually allowing it to be performed without conscious effort. This process decreases the need for attention and creates maximum efficiency within the motor and memory systems. Examples of muscle memory are found in many everyday activities that become automatic and improve with practice, such as riding a bicycle, typing on a keyboard, typing in a PIN, playing a musical instrument,[1] martial arts or even dancing. from wiki....my issue is muscle memory is only as good as its kept fresh. I wanted Josh to comment on it.

couldnt have been said better.. at times i thought "i dont remember this piece at all" but my fingers did when they instinctively moved over the keys, all i had to do is fill in a few blanks and there it was

I learned piano as a little kid, gave up because I really didn't like the teacher. Now I'm learning again. 60 years after I practised scales, I can still play them without any trouble - that's muscle memory for you!

Hey Josh, I've watched a few videos of yours and am confused about the timeframes in which you learn pieces. For you it seems as if learning a difficult piece is a matter of 1 or 2 weeks, for me it takes much longer. Now I realise that you're obviously at a much higher level than I am in terms of skill, but so are the pieces you play in terms of difficulty, so I wonder if my pieces are too difficult for me? I get through them eventually and I get them to a decent quality but it takes up to 1.5 - 2 months for me (at ~1 hour a day).

I think you're comparing your 1 hour a day to what I assume is somewhat like his 6-10 hours a day. Make the comparison in hours actually spent training and you seem to be on par with him.

ChrisNyren hey thanks for answering, I didn't think he'd practice that much, although in hindsight that seems logical. What threw me off is him saying he can get a difficult piece pretty good in an hour, in an hour I can maybe get the first line pretty good... But that just comes back to him being a lot more experienced (and talanted) than me.
