It's a lot of work but I know you and your friends and family will really appreciate document your adventure of a lifetime.

For your videos I hit the like button before I watch. I’m confident in my decision after watching so many. You got the top 10. One of my top 10 is when someone plays a repetitive, monotonous yt sound loop for more than 1 minute. Sometimes it goes for 20+ and becomes an ear worm that I mute and often miss what they’re saying. I will probably be a slower hiker and will not be able to afford the cost of time to do anything fancy. I’m not doing it to grow my channel or monetize but I’ll do the best I can and keep my eye on the prize - to enjoy the privilege of being out there. It’s going to pretty much have to go out ‘as I am’ which is the title of my trip. Thanks again Jay!

Aw thanks, Mary. I worked in IT as a VMWare administrator where you can run multiple servers on a single physical server and part of my job was planning and monitoring performance expectations and troubleshooting anything that comes up. Lots of data and charts and numbers.

It’s funny that you suggest filming in landscape mode because it’s ideal for KZfaq videos. With the rise of TikTok, however, I find it to be more efficient to film in portrait due to so many people being opposed to turning their phone sideways just to watch a TikTok video. I supposed it matters which platform the vlog will be posted to. Great points. Thanks for sharing.

I'm 75% sure I'll take my Sony a6600 with me next time. Hard to say really but I really don't want to miss out on photo or video opportunities next time. I would also take my DJI Osmo Pocket with and I ordered a Z axis stabilizer so you won't see so much of that bounce when I walk. I'll have to test it first but it should make the quality better especially for hyperlapses.

Thanks for this vlog Jay. I didn’t understand all of it but it was interesting to think about all the work and details required to pull this off. One thought about this vlog, from a still photo type person, it helps if you don’t have a bright light behind your head. This can suppress the details in the darker areas of the image. And it’s hard to look at. All in all a great compilation of advice.

Yep, great suggestion. I keep it in mind but still occasionally forget. It's always tough too when you have a beautiful backdrop but the lighting is wrong.

How are you editing your videos? I"m watching your latest one. It's filmed in the normal 16:9 but it seems to be processed in a 2:3 job so it rendered with the big black borders on top and bottom. When creating a new video project in your editor look for 16:9. If it's not a project property it could be in the final render settings. Have fun on the CDT! Hope to see you out there if the world doesn't lock down by then.

@@JayWandersOut I was using onboard software on my s10, but it glitched and refused to save edited video. I realize that the last video was not rendered in a viewer friendly format. I used viva video for the most recent episode, and I'm pretty sure it was operator error that caused the weird formatting. It gave several size options to choose from, and I erroneously chose the smallest thinking it would save room on the micro sd. I think I know how to avoid that, but just in case I don't, is there a minimum size requirement for the video to be full screen? Thank you so much for your help! Splash

To get links in the description you just paste the URL there. It automatically converts anything starting with "" to a link like most things.

Love the stats backing up the tips. Just ordered the fuzzy stickers and am excited with Greg’s new camera and filters to see how we can up our game. Audio has for sure been the biggest learning curve and most time consuming to edit. I also notice I keep forgetting to video myself 🤦🏼♀️. Great tips and can’t wait to incorporate them when we hit the trail to help keep our captured memories that much better!

What camera and filters did you get? I have ND filters for my Osmo Pocket but often don't use them because they are tiny and putting them on and off is kind of a pain. Hopefully I get better.

Jay Wanders Out, Britt got me the Sony a5100. I love it. smaller and lighter than some of the other mirrorless as it is missing the eviewfinder and hot shoe, but excellent photo quality. I also picked up a pack of filters including a uv, polarized, and ND. Haven’t tried any of them yet but like the idea of having an extra layer of protection for the lens.

If you go to your video in Studio on a browser there's a section for Tags. You just put key words there so if someone searched for say "thru hiker" and you have "thru hiker" or even "thru" and "hiker" in your tags your video could show up on their search. It's important to thoroughly fill out the tags so your videos are more likely to show up on someone's search. You never know what people will search for so I would fill in say "pct","pacific","crest","trail","pacific crest trail","pacific coast trail","thru hiker","thru","hiker","2020","hiking","backpacking","backpacker" I like to add in words someone may mistakenly search for.

KZfaq has a 500 character limit. I would say apply as many tags as you think applies to your video or channel. I also put "thru hiker","thru","hiker" so it could maybe count as a double hit on a search. Not exactly sure but why not.

Great video Jay. My last videos had the audio issue of being too soft after my loud intro. It is almost impossible to tell when editing on the phone in my tent. Luckily, viewers brought it to my attention but wish I knew from the beginning. SEEK FEEDBACK FROM YOUR VIEWERS on the audio quality!! Thanks Jay!

Haha, yep, I noticed that too. Your video is way more stable than it used to be so that was a huge improvement. Too bad about the Ponhoti river of a trail. At least you'll have more time for your ankle to recover completely.

Some great advice that I will definitely use. I just got a new camera and I definitely want to get a new mic. I have certainly had issues with wind and music audio levels. On recent vids I have greatly reduced the volume levels. Thanks again for all the tips and feedback you have given me!

Which camera did you get? I will admit some of your older videos had a lot of shaking but I really enjoyed how you presented them so with a smoother camera I think your videos will improve greatly. Sound is always tough too. It just sucks that you film and film and won't know if it's good until later and everything could be bad. Always tough.

Jay Wanders Out I ended up going with a gopro 8. I liked that it has removable batteries so that I can carry several and that it can film in several different angles as well as image stability now in all qualities and frame rates. There are also mods for the new camera and one includes a shotgun mic and additional mic jack. It has it’s disadvantages but was in my price range. I am still interested in the osmo pocket. Maybe next time.

I think GoPro 7 and up have pretty incredible stabilization so you should be good. I watch Camera Conspiracies and he recently got a GoPro 8 and has been trying to attach a wind screen on the thing and have been struggling. Hopefully the shotgun mic mod works well.

You did good enough for me to want to watch you through your hike. I went to film school and am an editor professionally for some years after film school. I just now days, do not have the money to get the items I need to improve my quality higher. I am using iPhone 10s, and I should be using iPhone 12 or 13, but I am hoping by the time the 14 comes out I can latch onto one of those. I am wondering if you edit directly on your phone on your thru hike, or if you use a tablet, which is more weight, but easier to work more quickly on I would assume. Also, Up load times are harsh on me in Anchorage, but I am probably trying to upload too high a data file because I know KZfaq is going to mush up the video, I hate seeing the data smear. So, what up load res file format are you preferring to up load to KZfaq now. I am trying out the Insta360, good points and bad. Hard to match shots between cameras. 360 only has a few Color Temperature settings, and Filmic Pro allows one to fine tune the image before you shoot. I am liking access to some wider looks at times when shooting the 360.

I just use my phone, the Samsung S21. I mostly make videos in 1080p at 30fps so encode at 8mbps, KZfaq's recommendation. For 4k it's about 35mbps. I just stick to those suggestions since uploading in higher bitrate just gets compressed down anyway. Yep, equipment for better video is expensive all right. I need that netter equipment to help improve where I'm already at though so worth it. I consider them investments right now. Hey Jay, apologies if you cover this elsewhere but I didn't find it. It looks like you attach your camera to your backpack strap using a Peak Design Capture Clip (or similar product). How do you like it? I've read these types of clips don't work well with backpacks with wider straps. I have a ULA Circuit and the strap is greater than 2.5 inches. Any advice on how to best carry your camera for easy access?

I used the Peak Designs clip on a ULA Catalyst the whole AZT and I thought it worked great. I even carried an Allen wrench the whole time in case the camera mount loosened but it never did. It isn't lightweight that's for sure. The only thing that happened was I got a calloused patch of skin on my left shoulder from the side of the clip rubbing against it for 54 days. Didn't hurt or annoy me though.

Any advice on actually posting videos from the trail? Even using my home wifi it can take 3+ hours to upload a single 10 minute video (in 1080), and I'm sure upload times will be even slower on the trail. Ideally I'd like to post videos every-other day, but can't imagine where I'd have the downtime to do so. Did you ever just upload directly from your phone without wifi? That seems to be an option in certain places along the trail, but I'm sure that would quickly drain my phone's battery so I'd probably have to carry a solar panel to keep it charged up.

I planned on editing as I went. In the beginning I edited a little each night but as soon as the sun goes down it gets so cold my fingers got too stiff to edit. By a few weeks in I pretty much only edited in town which also explained all the zeros later.

You said you have a Galaxy S7 camera. How do you connect an external mic to it? USB port, round port? Which mic do you prefer? Thanks, Darryl

I had an S7 but I felt the video quality wasn't good enough so I never used it for video. It has standard 3.5mm jacks. Now I have an S21 and use a USB typec dongle with a lavalier mic. Kind of a hassle but one of the only way to fight the wind.

These tips must be useful for anyone planning short or longer hikes. I stumbled across your video and glad i did!! May i ask what type of camera gear you were carrying when you were on the trail? I am new with camera stuff and planning to slowly add gears to my bag. Also planning to do short hikes with the gear before i hit a big one. When i watch vloggers, not necessarily the hiking type, i am truly overwhelmed with tons of stuff coming out of their bags. Primary camera, backup cam, action cam, 360 cam, drone, mic, big mic, gimbal, much bigger gimbal, tripod, batteries, hard drives etc. All these electronic gear alone should make a separate bag. Does a hiker really need to haul all those gears in addition to the essential backcountry backpacking stuff? Or do these gizmos truly needed to make a hiking video much more enjoyable for the audience? Because you are a hiker yourself, i am sure i could get some great tips from you. Thank you!!!

I'm glade it was useful. On the PCT I had a Sony RX100-V, a GoPro 5 Session, a Samsung Gear 360, and a collapsible tripod that gets maybe 4ft high. I didn't use the 360 as much so on the Arizona Trail I didn't bring any 360 camera. On the Arizona Trail I had a Sony A6600 with 18-135mm lens, my Samsung S21, the Comica stereo powered microphone, a lavalier mic, and a 1lb carbon fiber tripod. For both I had at least a 26,800mAh battery and another 10Ah battery. No drone for either. I did bring various cables, a larger USB wall charger, and 256GB thumb drives to back up data. To account for over 5lbs of extra camera gear on the AZT I tried to go really light with everything else like using a quilt vs a sleeping bag. It's tough with all the gear all right but worth it in the long run to document your adventures. It is really nice looking back on some of the places I've been. Definitely test out your vlogging gear especially the audio! I'm checking out 2022 AT hiker channels and so far their audio outside is pretty rough. That's a huge quality improving item. I think even the channels with the cutest girls, which always gets more attention and audience, if their audio is bad people will stop watching them. Good dialogue audio and not too loud music are very important. Good luck!

@@JayWandersOut Thank you, Jay, for your detailed reply!! TBH, i was wondering myself about the usefulness of a 360 cam. Looks like my doubts are shared by others. Definitely 360 cams are a craze indeed, they do have their fans, may be i will try them out in a different setting. So, what about gimbals? If i am not wrong, you used a mirrorless cam in your AZT hike. How easy or difficult to use it to make stable shots without a gimbal? If carrying a big cam is not enough, i do understand that a modern dslr gimbal would only make the hiking more difficult for sure. Anyway wanted to see what exactly made you not choose a gimbal. And, would you keep the Sony cam hanging over your shoulder while you hike just to be ready for a good shot? Or just put it in the bag and unpack the bag at regular intervals for a recording session? Just wondering if keeping it over your shoulders with a strap might get in your way and that must be annoying while walking. You could see from my silly questions that i am a beginner. Just throwing it out there, so i could begin doing those small things right rather than learning hard way. Meanwhile, i did browse through your video section and thrilled to see a ton of uploads out there. I am definitely going to watch them slowly to get an idea about the way of your filming while on the trail. Thank you for all your efforts. I used a Peak Designs shoulder strap clip for the Sony a6600. I recorded any video while moving with my Samsung S21. Its video stabilization has really advanced to the point I felt it good enough. A gimbal for the mirrorless camera is just way too big and heavy and fragile and also uses power. I don't think it's practical. I considered a gimbal for the phone as well and sure, they're small, but still fragile and also requires power. I've found to vlog well your gear needs to be easily accessible and quick to start recording otherwise you don't record as much. I still haven't researched the latest DJI gimbal though to decide on that. The latest GoPro and DJI Action cams have amazing stabilization so many vloggers use them and they work out great. I'm still thinking the newest phones have stabilization good enough to work for vlogging and you'll have it with you anyway. I did use the Sony a6600 for any tripod shots though since the video quality is higher. By the way the newest phones are also capable of recording in h265, whereas the Sony a6600 only does h264. H265 is basically half the size for the same data so it'll save you a bundle on storage in the future. I see the GroPro9 also does h265. In order to edit h265 videos though your phone will need to be able to play it as well so there's that catch and another incentive to get the newest phone.

Sound... sound... sound.... will run more people off from watching than most of the other issues.... Tip #10... do a practice video.... DO SEVERAL!!! As they say, practice makes perfect... practice your video taking, talking, camera skills, editing skills with your “training hikes”. People will get to know you and you get to know your tools and how to use them. Love your videos Jay... keep them coming... cheers...

So true. My first two backpacking trips I filmed but I didn't even make a video out of them because I felt the footage and camera work wasn't good enough. Practice is definitely a necessity.

Jay Wanders Out both are true lol. But my hiking buddy, also named Jay, pointed out to me that he makes a brief cameo at the southern terminus along with his truck. The year you hiked the PCT he volunteered to check hikers in at the monument. Small world.

Jay Wanders Out Dune? No. It’s an editing program that seems to work with go pro gear... and others. It seemed popular for a while but now not so much.. I’m not good with technology so I prefer to learn a program that’s going to stick around for a while.

Oh yeah. I remember seeing the logo for that at the end of some people's videos. I haven't heard much of it recently. I guess half the people use iMovie these days. I used PowerDirector with an Android phone but many prefer Kinemaster. I tried Kinemaster but didn't like it as much as PoweDirector. Were you going to solely edit on a phone? On a PC I use Davinci Resolve and love it so far.
