This is a nice tutorial to compare the two methods, but it would be more helpful if you told us the WHY instead of just showing us the HOW. You're tweaking 200 things really fast without giving us an overview of what is happening and the reasoning behind this. It's nice demonstration, but perhaps give us a little more background into your logic

Hell yes, randomly served this video and my God have you nailed the bane of my existence dealing with how other people color things. I’ve had to fix pink trees and jagged shadows ON PEOPLE’S FACES, let alone already having to fix bad captures. Let alone someone who monitors with a LUT so I had to rebuild gross yellow footage from scratch because applying the LUT made it terrible. THANK you.

I’m a film student and my first official lesson on grading in DaVinci the editing teacher was showing the class the different colour tools and for some reason when people were asking for help with applying a grade to rec 709 he’d just default to telling them to use the qualifier. I only knew little about grading before this but thinking logically about how the qualifier picks a colour selection, it didn’t make sense that he was defaulting to that and when using it myself I pointed out how there was the ugly blotchy bits after using. So after playing around with the different tools I just ended up using the vs curves a lot more and the teacher saw me and was like “yeah you could do it like that I guess”. After watching this video I’m just happy I was on the right lines, I still haven’t done a massive amount of grading yet but this certainly makes me optimistic that I’ll be able to improve

It's impressing how similar to Photoshop is this workflow. I mean, this happens in photography too, people loves to select random colors, apply some ugly mask and make the colors pop out without taking care of posterization, skin colors, etc. I'm new to video editing, this tutorial helped me a lot to get similar results as in photoshop.

This is absolutely insane. Must be in Top 5 tutorials I've seen in my life, not just video tutorials but ANY.

This is what I do in photoshop with images. Every picture looks better by just changing basic things like exposure, contrast and saturation. Then you can always go in and tweak details and masking but often that isnt even needed. Its amazing comparing before and after with how fast and easy the workflow is.

Everything looks off balance. The whole point of color grading and correcting is to balance things. Personally I am not a fan of the CYAN/Greenish contrast. It just makes it look very amateur and throws it completely off balance. You either going to cool it and neutralize it, or you're going to warm it and the whole contrast happens when you create the right curve balance points between red green and blue. The first thing you notice in this video is the sky. That's the main problem in color correction, balancing everything so your brain doesn't have to fight for life to focus on the subject.

Terrific! Thanks to your instructions, I was able to rescue an old family video that had a strong yellow cast and low contrast. Now the video shines in the right colors. I had previously tried desperately to save the video.

I know you already know how helpful this information is but just wanted to say how grateful we all are! I've been paying for quality LUTs for a while now and I will probably continue to do so because they are created by pros who take the time to emulate the ARRI look for instance, however after watching your videos, I'll probably attempt a more custom look on certain projects. The whole process just feels a lot more fun now that I know more about the tools and how/when to use them. You're an absolute legend! This was really helpful thank you! I'm doing right now my first davinci grading! Just one more question: So now i'm moving on to the next clip and I'll copy the nodes and paste them on this new one. If the clips are similair, most likely the nodes will go well on the new clip, but imagine that they dont go well. Do you retouch it with the same process? like first you go to the contrast, then to the tint... or you start a new node tree? What input can u give me on this one? Thanks ! And I'm sorry if my question looks too dumb hehe

Love it. Many small lessons, some of which I've always intuitively done right (for instance choosing a hero frame), a little proud here - not gonna lie. My node sequence looks very similar: First standardise, then establish latitude in both contrast and saturation, then treat colours. And most importantly: Whether you use the X vs X curves or qualifiers: Always be soft. One big takeaway for me is how you go about treating the saturation for individual hues in the HSL node (that's something I've always done based on what I noticed rather than *always* having one node dedicated to this aspect) and the "go a bit too far and back" to get rid of the bias you get staring at tinted footage all day. You can top it off after this with a "style" node where you might use tonal curves to create more faded or cooler shadows. But that's the beauty: A workflow that produces a clean, transparent result which you can then process further according to taste.

Even on my first day of work (more than 12 years ago), I didn't do anything close to what you described as beginner job. The value of professional colourists goes beyond making pretty pictures, they know and understand the mode and psychology of colours and know how to help the story through tools and techniques they acquired throw the years. Comparing two pictures and asking which one looks better is wrong; the question is the method and its reason not look. A yellow look is not necessary wrong (The City of Lost Children by jean-pierre jeunet)

Hi Waqas Qazi, I'm a beginner at this and am finding your tutorials quite useful - your newer ones I am finding more useful and I just wanted to mention a couple of constructive comments: 1. In the first half of your video you showed exactly which controls you are editing by showing it zoomed in, so we can see which control and how much you are modifying it, which is extremely helpful. However, when you added the Glow FX...there was no zooming into the control, and so it is hard to see which controls you're modifying and how much by. I first watched the video on a large TV and couldn't work out where your mouse was when you added the Glow FX, and so didn't have a clue what you were doing and where. I then watched it closer on my PC monitor and was able to figure out what you were changing and how much, but as you did it so quickly, I had to really focus on which control you were changing. I found your earlier videos you did a long time ago hard to follow for the above reasons, but it looks like your more recent ones are easier to follow. 2. As someone else mentioned here, you stated it's important to know which camera was used, but then you didn't state why. As a beginner, I am still struggling to figure out what I need to do with this knowledge - what do I change, where, and why ? Maybe a topic for another video maybe?
