CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Harlan (Tim Robbins) tries to pull a shotgun on the aliens, but Ray (Tom Cruise) stops him because he knows they're outnumbered.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage. People think the aliens are mocking our "primitive" human technology, but this scene is meant to show quite the contrary. The reason they are so fascinated by the bicycle is because the aliens never invented the wheel. They are seeing a technology that is completely alien to them, a mechanism so simple, yet one they've never seen before. Laugh if you want. This is WotW canon.

darryl_m Well, that's just, like, your opinion man. The War of the Worlds is a much celebrated classic from 1898 that's spawned many other works based on the book - most famously the 1938 radio broadcast, the 1953 movie and the 2005 movie. Since 1898 it's been established the Martians did not invent the wheel. Which I'm sorry to say makes more sense than you think, as nature does not use the wheel *anywhere* - with the exception of humans. It's entire possible that the aliens, because they have access to some ability we don't have (telepathy perhaps, could be how they control those tripods) that makes the wheel obsolete. It's extremely anthropocentric to claim all aliens must use the wheel just because we do.

You are making a lot of assumptions. Assuming that aliens must have arms and legs and that they advance at the same rate as Humans. The thing about alien life is that it's alien. We invented the wheel because we see a need for them and that's the essence of technology. The wheel is not the only possibility for solving mobility problems but it is a useful tool for us in relation to our rate of intellectual development. But you don't know how much more intelligent they are compared to us and judging by their technology I would assume that they are far beyond us. Also you aren't considering what type of culture they may have and the impact that it has on their developments. Maybe they're only interested in things that resemble themselves or life on their planet in some way. I didn't read the book so I'm just guessing but maybe the tripods are bio-mechanical. If humans had the ability to skip past the wheel and invent teleporters I'm pretty sure we would have done so.

For people asking about why the Martians didn’t invent the wheel let me explain. In the book The War of the Worlds the narrator witnesses the Martians building their machines in a huge pit, he explains that he realised that the wheel, a feature created on this planet is complete complex to the Martians curiosity, a handling machine brings a broken horse cart into the pit and the Martians seemed fascinated by it. The narrator goes on to explain how he observed the Martians main components for movement seem to be a complicated series of friction bearings and sliding rods. And in this movie the bicycle is a reference to that. It’s meant to demonstrate the different mechanical evolution of different species.

Actually if by the standards of technological advancement, their Tripods are ancient if they buried them thousands, if not millions of years ago and waited for Humanity to get to a certain point. These aliens were probably nothing more than the cattle farmers of their civilization, and that their military was probably much, much more powerful and advanced than the Tripods we see here.

Those Aliens seem quite inquisitive. Since they're curious individuals, I wonder what were their thoughts about the picture of the girl they were checking out. That right there of what they're looking at was a girl who seemed like a happy person. I wonder if that impacted their way of seeing Humans in any sort of way, like developing any sense of sympathy as in "Oh, look, it appears to be a Human who looks happy... If you've actually seen the behind the scenes, the second alien at 1:31 actually licks the photograph though it's hard to make out because it's tougue it's behind it. The reason it's doing this is to show how that they are not just examining the photograph of the person out of curiosity. It's to show how they see humans as a food source, and that the alien is craving to eat them. It really shows the sadistic nature of the aliens and what their intentions are.

Hence why spielberg wrote these aliens in a way where they eat people because from a human perspective that's evil.

I don't think they eat humans they just use them as fertilizer for the red weed they brought from their homeworld I think he was just examining in detail and was amazed by the photograph and then if you pay attention to his face his eyes looked sad because he realized how interesting humanity is but then knows they're killing them.

Very amphibious, they sorta resemble ancient species of frogs. I like how the aliens are interested in our world in terms of things we created such as bicycles *the wheel seemed to catch that one's interests* and photography.

I find the design of these versions of the aliens interesting. All of the books describe them as basically an oval-shaped mass with tentacles, while these had no tentacles and instead had one leg, 2 arms/legs, and 2 small "flippers."

Probably what killed them. I'd theorize and say that they were cautioned not to leave the confines of their tripods lest they contract any diseases and illness. But like anything they became curious and ventured out to explore this new alien environment eat the food, drink the water, breathe the air. A fateful mistake but a mistake we as humans aren't strangers to.

At 1:40, you can see a boom mic. If you look at the very top of Harlan’s gun, you can see it. It’s very easy to miss because both his gun and the boom mic and the background are like “black” colored. If you need help looking for it, go to this time stamp: 1:38 and when Harlan takes the gun away from ray, keep looking at the top of the screen where his gun is and you’ll see it

For those who want context In the book the aliens resembled more like octopuses and even had suction cup like tentacles to grab things with hence the design of the Tripods. In the remake they look more like Spiders then Octopuses.

I'm suprised Rey & the other guy didn't suprise attack em with their shovels & lead pipes lying around or kill one with it's throat slitted silently. As the tripod on guard would be alerted & would rip the house from it's foundation to zap em. At least then they did a service & made a few tripods inoperable meaning saving more lives in the long-run.

No doubt SPIELBERG's version of WAR OF THE WORLDS is one of the most underrated Sci-Fi films of all time and should have been a bigger box office hit. I believe Tom Cruise's interview with TODAY's Matt Lauer, which went badly (viral in today's terms) over the discussion of antidepressant medications to treat postpartum depression just 5-days before the opening the movie created a damper on the success of the movie. Which caused a rift between Spielberg and Cruise ever since, but their recent interaction at the 2023 luncheon gives hope they have reconciled.

I wonder if these guys could take on the Xeno’s. In a 1v1 I’m sure the Xeno would utterly annihilate the Martian. But if they’re in the tripods, I get the feeling the Xeno would have a hard time finding a way to destroy it, especially since the Martian weapons are so efficient at destroying organic material.
