In this free video drum lesson, I want to teach you the drum solo intro to the song “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath, featuring the drumming of Bill Ward.
This was requested over on my Facebook Page and has been on my list for a long time as well. Before the solo begins, Bill plays a little drum fill that I thought would be cool to include in this lesson. The transcription starts at 1:37 into the song.
The solo features a few licks that get repeated including some fast single stroke “fives” and some cool triplet ideas. All of the licks are punctuated and supported by Bill’s great use of the bass drum…creating some cool linear licks in the process.

They are both the same technically. So either one depending on how long you want to make each bar.

Interestingly enough I'm pretty sure bill ward only used two toms, a 12and 18 inch. At least at the time of Paranoid. That's why theres the crazy difference in tone, but without compromising the attack.
