You didn't make any mistakes in having the afterburner on, you want to keep the afterburner on the entire time and instead of trying to 1 circle an opponent that cuts the throttle use your energy advantage, cutting the throttle makes your opponent lose energy and you can just pull up and do a loop over your opponent, and even if your opponent is able to follow you, you can keep looping until he's out of energy.

Another method I’ve heard can help for F104 players is toggling flaps in short bursts. They’ll survive for a few seconds at mach speeds, you’ll be fine. Especially since the default setting when you extend them is gonna be landing flaps, they can seriously help if you need a quick speed dump.

Everyone has a different play style, find the right plane that fits your style. Sounds like you need a few good boom and zoom fighters. Try these out for fit: Bf-109, P47, P-51, F4 phantom. It sounds like you need to avoid the turn fighters like the spit fires or Japanese nation.

@@R0gueM I must have posted this on the wrong comment but I totally agree with you, I've had a few good runs with high tier jets but I have the most fun in 4.0-5.0 br vehicles. Anything higher and you are playing with nothing but people who dedicate their life to the game, it becomes a giant headache at that point imo. Although I am looking forward to the upcoming f-18!

In reality, the 104 was a purpose built interceptor for, if I'm not mistaken, cold war era bombers. It has one job, go up, intercept, throw missiles, return to base. In reality they have all of the world to keep their speed up, and are not confined to a box. IL2, the sim, does this pretty well, as a direct result of being mostly open world.

@@commodorejones8044 Yeah, that's why I don't play warthunder much anymore. The maps are too small. And You are entirely right, the configuration of the aircraft and skinny wings means nowhere to store fuel, whereas Twin engine aircraft provide lot of space between the engines for fuel. More wing means more fuel, and more carrying power

As kid I loved the Starfighter! It is one of the straightest, most beautiful jet-plane's ever built. "Kelly" Johnson was a genius. The F-104 was his interpretation what in the 70/80's later was the F-16, in the 1950's. He asked the pilots of the Korean war, how they think about a light, agile and fast jet. Afterwards he constructed the "Starfighter" as "The rocket with a man inside". Even the German pilots liked to fly this jet. And after reformation of the work flow of maintaineance and spare part management at the Luftwaffe the F-104G becomes a very reliable plane.
