I use three main boards for my style planning on Pinterest. I have an outfit ideas board where I pin outfits with pieces that I already have. I stick pretty close to that rule so that way it is only filled with outfits I can recreate so it won't make me want to go and buy anything new. I have a style inspo board which is where I pin outfits that make me go, "Oooh, I like that," but I know I won't wear. That is my main board when I want to get creative and try something new with styling. My favorite board is one I titled "signature style". The rule is that I can only pin outfits that make me go, "I would definitely wear that." I go through it fairly regularly to delete any outfits that no longer resonate, but it is easily my favorite board. Similar to your method, it has helped me to identify what I will wear and hone in on my personal style. It makes me so happy when I scroll through it because even though my closet doesn't exactly match, the board feels very personal and very me.

This....this was mind blowing. I’ve been using a Pinterest board to save things I like (including color palettes and scenery that evokes the essence that I want to build in my wardrobe! Yay!) but the way you are so intentional about it, stepping back and seeing the big picture, the similarities, the aesthetics, what you are drawn to, and being mindful about building lists to fill in gaps AFTER you’ve shopped your own closet .... I’m in love with this method of yours!!

THANK YOU for mentioning that decluttering needs to be done consciously and intentionally. There has been a lot of emphasis on throwing things away since Marie Kondo and I do feel that it's necessary to ask ourselves a little more than "does it bring me joy?" when getting rid of something. Right now I'm wearing a skirt that used to be a dress that I cut and then dyed into a color I like. Did it bring me joy before? No. Does it now? Yes it absolutely does! Also people assume that they are "donating" their things so it's a good cause but a lot of it is junk that ends in a landfill. I wish there wasn't this easy way out that is "donating". Sorry for the rant..

So true. It's a western luxury to get rid of things because they don't bring joy when they are useable, and assume that you can simply buy something when you do want or need it.If you have chosen and bought something you should try hard to find a way to use it. It will make you think twice about buying things in the future.

I agree! Too many people also follow the "spark joy" idea mindlessly, without stopping to ask "Do I NEED this?" and end up throwing out things that they later realize they need and have to buy again. Marie Kondo grew up in a well to do family and was a ruthless culler most of her life. If she happened to get rid of something essential, it was no big deal to replace it. Same with her clients. Her system isn't for people who mindlessly toss or who can't afford to replace, or even for people who can't afford what really sparks joy for them but have to be practical with their purchases. My couch doesn't spark joy, but I need it and appreciate it. I can't say that my underwear sparks joy, but I need it and appreciate it. It would cost me a fortune to purchase a couch that really sparked joy for me, so I settle for something that makes me content, instead. And shoes. And tweed jackets. It would cost what I spent on my entire wardrobe for the tweed blazer I really want, but obviously that isn't practical. Going naked except for a blazer would cause talk. ;-)

I have the same story! I got as a gift a dress which was absolutely not my style, i cut my chest also. But because it was a gift I kept it for a year in my closet. After few summers I decided to cut it and make a long skirt. 10 years later! it still my loveliest skirt for a summer. Every time i wear it i get a compliment about my skirt. So ladies, be creative :)

The idea of creating a Pinterest board , based on my real life , is such an aha moment for me. I find myself pinning lots of "aspirational" outfits, to my many boards. In reality, my uniform is a pair of jeans(the cut can vary) and "fill in the blank for a top" dependent upon the temperature. I really love wearing maxi dresses/skirts, or shorts & tee shirts in the height of warm weather. I love to wear color, but am not a big fan of patterns. Foot wear depends on my mood. That can be anything from cowboy boots, to heels, to flats, to Chuck Taylors (LOVE my Chucks!). Thank you for helping me to realize that the clothes that I actually own can be very stylish in their own right 😊.

Possibly I need a fantasy look and lifestyle board as well as a reality board as what I like doesn't often suit me or my lifestyle. Hopefully I can use the fantasy board to find a few elements that do suit me, whilst reminding me what doesn't.

As someone who grew up with a Mother who bought in Charity Shops (read Thrift Shop if needs be) 90% of the time, I had little to no awareness of how to cultivate style or even what looked good on me. Through your videos I am gaining a sense of awareness, and just starting to see what looks good on me and what doesn't - rather than just trying to recreate a look I like. It is still very hard for me to know how to translate an image in a magazine or online into a my-body-type-fit outfit that conveys the same message/impact/style as the original, so I know I'd really appreciate a "how to per body type" if possible.

I really appreciated the reminder about not decluttering things too much or too soon...we really don't want to be adding to the landfills! Sometimes we are too quick to get rid of things, only to replace them later. We need to be careful with that.

I agree! I have space in my closet (a shelf that fits a large bin) for clothes that I like, but am not "feeling" right now or aren't "in style" right now. Chances are, a silhouette, color or pattern will come back in, or I will want to get creative and try that "old" piece out. Example: I am currently not a fan of jeans. I had to get rid of many jeans after my 1st and 2nd pregnancy because they just didn't fit. I kept a couple pair of jeans in this large bin, to take out in a year or so, when I might want to add denim back into my lifestyle. I have also realized that I have a high/long/tall back rise, which makes jeans and pants very difficult to fit properly - they pull on my hips when I sit.

OMGosh I so agree with this! I was in a "get rid of stuff" mood last year, and put in my give away bag a CLASSIC coach shoulder bag from the 80's my husband gave me. I hadn't carried it in years, so I got rid of it, only to discover I would have carried it now. I AM SICK ABOUT IT!

I know this is made 2 years ago but I found this super, super helpful!!!!! I actually took 4 pages of notes! I am going to go through this over the course of the coming weeks. Thank you, thank you!!

Wow, Alyssa. This video resonated with me. The repeated decluttering wagon can be a pitfall and is as wasteful as the initial overbuying cycle. Taking time to really know our personal style preferences is critical, I think.

Wow - I am already doing this using Pinterest... I like how you said “life stages” and “values”... I’m over 40 so these past few years I’ve noticed I’ve somehow have figured out what my “style” truly is and don’t really care for the trends and dads that exist ... what’s important is how confident I feel in my clothes and my sense of style .. you don’t need much once you figure out your style and uncover a confident attitude- thank you 😊

I'm a big fan of Pinterest for curating my personal style and that of my clients. It's a great place to 'shop' without shopping. For me it's a similar dopamine fix that one gets when you 'add to cart' but it slows down the consumption rate and makes me a much more mindful shopper. Lovely video 💕

Your last "find your style" video from 3 years ago helped me a TON. At the risk of sounding dramatic, it changed my life. I was able to finally see what it was that I liked and start dressing the way I wanted. This video is awesome, it's much more comprehensive and I've already watched it 3 times in one week and it's helping me refine my wardrobe even more. Thank you!

I'm glad you mentioned not being too quick to declutter. Just now I'm wearing a maxi skirt that used to be one of my favourites, but I barely wore it at all for seven years. Now it's one of my favourites again and so comfortable. Sometimes I just get bored of wearing the same things all the time and need to put them aside for awhile. Other times, the item really doesn't suit me, or-- and this is the tough one-- I wore it until it is starting to look shabby. Those much loved, worn out items are the hardest to de-clutter!

Great idea for a video with great tips! Would love to maybe see a follow-up of some examples from your real-life process, eg, perhaps some of the pins that you decided weren't "you" and why you initially pinned them and then abandoned the idea (if you still have/remember them), some themes that you noticed and the pins you saw them in, some pins where you said "this is me, I actually already have this" along with the real life outfit, and some pins where you got your wish list ideas from. I think that would be fun to watch your actual process, since we all love your style!

There was a part in this video about whether or not you would keep an item for future years and it just made me do a mental scan of my wardrobe. I'm 31 and when I applied each piece to my future self (I did ten years) it was actually very revolutionary! I did find a few pieces I know I don't want for my future 41 year old self but I don't think they need to be decluttered just yet.

Just edited my Pinterest Deleted a few. Looking at the remaining styles they are all similar. Loads of black white camel and tan. Touches of denim and forest green and dark blue. Interesting. Have always shopped with a list and alone! Had an interesting experience late last year. I moved cities (16th move) My summer wardrobe box was misplaced, yes I live in Australia. Many friends said how fabulous, but I was devastated. I have spent the last 12 yrs curating my wardrobe. I didn’t want new clothes I wanted my clothes. Luckily I found them buried in our garage. I love watching you and Audrey and Justine. You make me plan and really appraise my wardrobe. I also do the Marie Kondo, a bit of OCD! I swap out summer and winter wardrobes so I can easily see my clothes and finally feel completely satisfied with where I am at. Thanks girls!🙋🏼‍♀️

I’ve been doing something similar as my life before ( my sons death) and after, are different. Obviously C19 has changed our life style too. So I sat and prepared a seven day table with rough time spent doing various things. I discovered I spend most time ‘active’, taking part in gardening, growing fruit and vegetables and flowers for cutting, on my allotment and making improvements to the fabric and finishes of our home ( reusing many materials). A medium time house-working and cooking, minimal time doing creative sewing and other crafts. This has meant I don’t have a great deal of time for wearing ‘presentable’ clothes as most need to be practical, yet it makes sense for me to use my energy to change, around dinner time in the evening, into either my prettier things, or hopefully in the future, things to socialise in ( presentable but social not business) I need fewest face to face business outfits. So applying that short phrase - suitable to your life style, - has in fact, completely and radically changed my perception of what I need in my wardrobe and how to enjoy my pretty things. I think C19 has brought about radical reassessment for us all, with an eye to another period of readjustment as society opens up again. So personally I have quite a few things packed away to review again in 3 to 6 months before passing them on.

Since following you, I now shop with a list. This year I am also tracking what clothes I buy in Excel. I subtract the cost (even if it’s a gift) from my annual budget, and note where I got it, what part of my lifestyle it fits (I counted my clothes and found myself lacking significantly home work and leisure clothes), how I felt at the time of purchase, and if I was with anyone. I recently added a column for what I am letting go of in exchange bc I still have too many clothes and am doing a one in, one out plan. At the end of the year, I hope to discern any trends, but already I have noticed that the act of tracking and having a 1 for 1 intention is holding me accountable and causing me to reduce my shopping.

After clearing out quite a bit from my closet, I've come to the conclusion that one of the reasons people say 'I have nothing to wear' is because they have so many things, more times than not it's all mix-matched, that they simply get overwhelmed. Between clearing out the things I no longer wear, what's left are the pieces I actually will wear, which are the classic 'staple pieces', and that open closet app, getting dressed is actually fun now... If I don't see anything right away, I go to my 'saved outfits' & pick something from there & either as it's saved or change/tweak a few things & I'm good to go :) For the open closet app, I also included accessories, i.e. jewelry that I wear the most & my sunglasses :) I do have the Pinterest picture board, now I need to go through & pair it down with what I'll actually wear, things that are more 'me' :)

I am really liking this mood, this direction. I love loving and using the things we have and being über intentional like you said. It has taken me years to get here and your videos have really helped to see how much more less can be. Another youtuber recently did a video on how she edited her pintrest board so that the inspiration pictures ONLY included clothes and items that she already had in her extremely minimal wardrobe, so that she would be inspired by the looks but not feel that she was missing anything. That was a really cool idea as well. Also, she only included pictures where the outfits were styled in a way she would actually want to wear them. I see it as a way of being even more intentional and minimal with your outfit planning. Sure our clothes could be mixed in so many ways but not all of the looks would reflect our true own style. I got from your video that you had similar thinking. I would love to see also the pins you kept and the outfits you would put together based on them!

love this! I am going through my abundant wardrobe.. first I get everything from that season and make lists, set a theme for the month and check off an item if I wear it. after the season finishes I check my lists and decide what stays or goes. I am rediscovering pieces that I have never really given a chance! Next I take the ones not selected to thrift shops or sell online! Last year was a no new buy and this year is a low buy thrifted year. The real estate idea is such a great idea (from a previous video of yours) and everything has to make the grade to stay!!

I always learn something from the way you analyze outfits and curate wardrobes to fit lifestyle and values. In particular, I really appreciate how you explore the different and range of values one can hold when shopping to fill in gaps when building up a wardrobe. Everyone has varying priorities and are at different points in their wardrobe journey. It is an incredibly valuable exercise to shop ones own closet. That is the best way to achieve sustainability. With that said....we are all human and have points of weakness. It is important to begin the journey and process to evolve towards more conscience shopping but also recognizing everyone's journey is different. You do that so well. Some people take leaps and others small steps. Using this Pinterest method to analyze current styles, lifestyle shifts and/or discovery of ones own style is such a good resource, but you add another step and that involves editing the Pinterest Board that was created after waiting a few days. This step bring clarity after slow analysis which will make curating a wardrobe easier. The first thing I would have to do is to pull aside my "cruise wear" and my "opera/theatre/occasional wear".

Perfect timing. I'm in the process of getting my warm weather clothes out and I want to watch this video again and go step by step. One thing that caught my attention was your mention of including pins, not wardrobe related. I think it's interesting that we may choose to surround ourselves with styles, colors, fabrics, etc. that make our hearts sign, but do not take this into consideration when choosing pieces for our bodies.

It’s Alyssa coming at us, and I love it! Finally it’s starting to feel like spring in Montreal! And I’m loving my POMP white shirt, next year I plan on getting the linen one. Thank you Alyssa!

I do similar to this, I have 4 boards, one for each season. Each one is in sections for style, occasion style (if we get the chance), accessories, food, places etc. and edit them a lot too.

Hi Alyssa! I love this video! I was wondering if you could make a follow-up video that talks about your 2021 wardrobe and maybe how you modify it for difference seasons? Do you plan all of your capsules for 2021 in January or do you just plan for the winter/spring and modify later? I would love to hear your thoughts!

But dramatic really suits you!!! 😃👌 And it IS life changing! 😍👍 Ciao, Alyssa! Love this kind of video. 👌🌷 Thank you for sharing the steps of the process, and I really enjoy seeing the cutaways of your working on things. There's something so special about watching other people work, at least for me! Do you find that too? And of course I love seeing anyone sitting with a pen and a notebook. But you knew that already!👻 And what is is that I see on your bedside table? 😎 I think I recognize the colours on the cover. Can it be? 🕵️‍♀️ Is it really my book? 😃🙏💖 Makes me so happy. Thank you for taking it for a real test drive. You're so authentic in everything you do! Love you for this! 🥰 Big hugs! 🌺😘 N

Timely video for me, Alyssa. I have fallen off the wagon recently, wrt intentional purchases. Call it Spring fever, or the light at the end of the tunnel with the pandemic, but I did a lot of online shopping (the deals are so good!) However, once I tried the items on, I did make sure to ask myself whether I needed it, did It fit me, does it "go" with what I already have etc and most of them were returned. Progress not perfection, right?

Awesome 😎 I am currently shopping my closet and accessories. I also am de cluttering some accessories. I have an outfit ideas board bit I will definitely implement a board for this year. I recently acquired some jackets for free (I have a small Poshmark business and my friend de cluttered her closet and gave me the results to sell.) I do suggest not turning away someone else clear out. You may find some things you want for your closet. That list you mentioned will help keep people on alert to check out opportunities like this. I really enjoyed your suggestions. I usually donate my clothes but reevaluating is a wonderful idea.

What to do when clean, structured silhouettes look best on you but your heart wants ruffles, patterns and color?! 😩 anytime I follow my heart I end up looking awkward or silly. But I physically look best in more structured pieces. Do I follow my heart (color, frills) or stay true to what looks best on my body type? 🤔

so much work and thought going into this. I really respect that. What i started doing inspired by your shop you wardrobe mantra is to go through my pinterest boards and make a new one with outfits i like that i can recreate with the stuff i already have. It is not a plan but could be the start of it.
