Following on from our older wardrobes videos, see how we have changed our methods since embracing flatbed CNC manufacturing techniques. We make the carcases and the doors using CNC, controlled by SketchUp design software via CabinetSense and Vectric. I am due to present some of these methods at SketchUp's 3D Basecamp gathering in Vancouver in September 2022.
You can trial the CabinetSense extension for SketchUp via this link:

Great job Alastair, it's so easy to get caught out by the tiniest detail (sensor position), but a good save! I've always found 22mm doors cause more problems than they cure - I'll stick with 18 thanks 🤣 (K)
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird 2 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean… but I really prefer 22mm for general rigidity of the door. Generally the Blum hinges cope well (even without moving up to the ‘thick door profile’ hinge variation for the standard 110 degree hinges.). Strangely this must be the first time I used 170 degree hinges on these doors, we must have used them mainly on the vinyl wrap wardrobes in the past which are 18mm thickness. I’m going to try switching to the 155 degree hinges as standard for wide openers because they seem to throw the door forward more as they open (but I need to check the extra sideways movement is not a problem!)
@creativechimp03
@creativechimp03 Жыл бұрын
You should be proud of this, lovely job. Have you found the 22 MR MDF is fine for wardrobe doors generally without warping? I’ve built some kitchen doors but now just want to do some flat panel MR MDF doors with 4x Blum hinges but I’m just worried they may warp being not a traditional made door.
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird Жыл бұрын
Hi Samuel thank you. generally I am more confident in the Finsa Fibrapan Hidrofugo MDF against warping than I would be with a solid wood 5 piece door (but I'm really no expert in processing solid wood). I would say that it's probably safest to build an MDF door with the panel in a groove dead centred in the thickness of the rails and stiles. Our CNC 2 piece method fits into a rebate instead and we do have to take care this doesn't lead to an imbalanced door. It helps to spray the door both sides at once soon aftr assembly - we do this by hanging the door from the hinge holes while spraying

Hi Alastair, love your work, just wondering where do you get your fibro board from? I've been using birch ply for everything so far, although now I've started painting things the edge finish isnt quite as good as I'd like it!
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird 2 жыл бұрын
Finsa Fibrapan Hidrofugo MDF - we get it from Able Boards or James Lathams - it’s a much more suitable product for painting than birch ply

Hello lovely videos..I have been doing this in a different country for the past 7yrs but I will like to set up the something similar in the UK as my family is here....your videos have been very insightful and inspiring and I think your membership platform would-be very useful for me buy I was wondering if you are thinking of including a yearly subscription price rather than the monthly one which am sure will be a lot better price wise than the monthly .....Once again thanks for the videos
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird Жыл бұрын
Hi! Until recently I was offering a yearly option at a reduced rate per month. However, I have just discontinued this because for the Pro Tier, I am considering winding this down in the next few months. Now is the time to sign up because all the pro tier content is currently still accessible as soon as you sign up, and there is nothing to stop you grabbing as much as you can and cancelling after 1 month if you choose. Before long I plan to package up the content (eg the pricing series; the upcoming spraying series) as independent paid downloads.

Hey Alastair, i was wondering did you do all the edgebanding yourself with that hebrock i saw in some video's? Or did you have someone else do it for you? Would love to hear from you! I am looking for an edgebander too in that pricerange!

Yes we did! We couldn’t get that machine to work properly for the first 6 months. I didn’t have a clue how these things work so it was a big learning curve, the main problem was the previous user had really burned the glue in the pot and we couldn’t seem to get rid of little black chips interfering with the bond, until finally we got an expert to do a complete strip and clean of the glue pot. Since then it has run perfectly and I actually really like the machine because it is not as complex as some out there. It doesn’t have pre-milling but that works for us coming straight off the cnc with a good clean cut.

Hello Alastair, Thanks for posting this. Your finish is incredible in the new workshop. Have you stopped using Hafele Loox lighting? I've been having a nightmare with Hafele's supply issues - I just received a switch this morning that was ordered on November the 1st 2021 for "next day delivery"! Are there any similar products that you would recommend? Thanks again for putting this up on youtube.

Hi Tom I quit using Loox because of supply issues and the way they keep changing their range, rendering parts I’d stocked incompatible! Speak to Dave Warne at www.light-solutions.co.uk/ tell him I recommended them. They supply the Leyton lighting range

Hi Alastair. Do you have a standard gap between the side of a cabinet and the wall that will usually be infilled
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird 2 жыл бұрын
He yes lately I have standardised on 60mm. This allows for an 18mm scrap mdf strip mounted to the side of the cabinet to support the scribe strip, leaving a 4cm ish gap which is about optimum for packing with a regular sized space plug

What bits do you use to make those doors on CNC?
@Alastair_Freebird
@Alastair_Freebird Жыл бұрын
Hi sorry for delayed reply. We started with a very expensive solid carbide downcutting spiral from Allied tools but then we found we got good enough results with a much cheaper surfacing bit. Both 25mm diameter. Finishing off into the corners with a 5mm straight cutter. Also a 90 degree v cutter to add chamfer. But since then we have gone back to the 2 piece door method, dropping a 12mm panel tight into a rebated 22mm frame, to avoid issues with sanding the recessed panels.
