This is the part 2 of a video series on the basics of tabletop wargaming. If you haven't seen part 1, here is the link : • Wargamology - What is ...
In this second video we focus on wargame design to understand the different dimensions of wargaming:
- Level of simulation
- Historical Accuracy
- Granularity of time and space
After that we have an overview of the big families of wargames (block wargames, hex and counters, card driven wargames...).

Another great video, and of course I knew I would not have been disappointed. I particularly liked the "abstraction vs simulation" part (at last, a functional and not just literal analysis of wargames!) and the refused equation "depth = complexity" (many times, it's just the opposite). Also, I think that depth can be enhanced by the "dimensions" of the simulation: a multidimensional game with military, political, economic, social aspects (i.e. a COIN title) even if it is more abstract can be deeper than a more conventional wargame about the same event that deals just with military issues. And yes, I love Band of Brothers, too. :)

Can you do a video on basic wargame strategy? Often times when I play wargames especially COIN, there are so many options you are not sure what to do. I really appreciate the freedom it allows, but it can get overwhelming. So if you can do a series of general war strategy and tactics from different scales, that would be super cool!
@HomoLudens1871

That's an excellent idea. I am not sure how doable it is though to come up with general strategies even for games of similar scales, BUT maybe making a video about how to approach wargames and become "good" at them, or at least have an idea of what to do, could be a good video. I'll think about it.

@@HomoLudens1871 that would be great! It's often overwhelming because of how many options there are. The freedom of most wargames can be confusing and it would be cool to get some basic approaches. Thanks!

These two videos have been massively helpful. I am just starting to attempt to get into coin games. Going to be grabbing Cuba Libra. My favorite game of all time is Root rn. And I realize that it’s actually quite similar to coin games. It’s almost like a stylized coin game with whimsical artwork. Any war games you would start a collection with?

It's a fun and easy medieval system. I wouldn't learn french for it, but if Vae Victis released a stand alone game in the system I would get it, especially as the rules are bilingual for those. And I heard that a new release like this might be announced in the near future...

@@HomoLudens1871 I clicked around Vae Victis on BGG and I glanced at photos of another game (WW2, not Les Rois Francs) and the rules in French were "easy" to guess. It was a trick question about learning French - the correct question was: "It's always worth learning French!" Les Rois Francs looks like something I would enjoy and I hope, like you said, one day they will release it as stand alone. Thanks for replying.

@@HomoLudens1871 Of course been there! Another awes*me video. What I like the most in your channel is this quasi-scientific approach. While most of reviewers simply discuss the game mechanisms, quality of components and presents gameplay you are trying to show games and game-related topics in broader spectre. As a student (and hopefully future academic) I really appreciate presenting the trends, game families or genres in structured and schematic way. This clearly shows that it is possible to adapt scientific criteria to describe games and introduce such science into universities. Sadly, also in Poland, games are treated rather indulgently - more like toys than the real element of culture, like films or literature. If I will argue on the importance of the games with someone in the future, I'm sure I'll use your videos. Essa! Greetings from Poland!

@@BrutusBelton That's really nice to read as the efforts in that sense are often overlooked by most of the audience. I'll be experimenting with a new format in the coming month that you will probably like a lot. Regarding Game design in academic circle, it looks like it is only a think in Anglo-saxon where universities' defense curriculum usually integrate some courses about wargaming. I guess that the impact of experiments like WATU in ww2 had a major impact on academic wargaming culture.
@BrutusBelton
@BrutusBelton 4 жыл бұрын
@@HomoLudens1871 Agreed. It is usually overlooked or skipped, but please remember that there are viewers which really enjoys that. Maybe we are in minority - according to youtube statistics - most watched boardgames videos are "Top 10 xxxxxxx games..". Totally understand why this format is so popular, but sadly most reviewers making "Top deckbuilding/hex and counter/draft games" elaborrate more on specific games (and simply describes the rules of each one in 2-3 mins) than discuss the foundations and specifics of this genre. So the ratio of presenting game family and picking best games from this family is 20:80. In my opinion it should be completely opposite - 80% of time talking about history of the genre, criteria, some most typical mechanisms, variants and methodology behind the list and 20% of tome - listing best games. I ve never seen youtuber who is that close to this model as you (ok, maybe Jamey Stegmaier). Thanky you for all your efforts! Hope one day we will play Liberty Roads! Essa!

100% aligned, and also to be clear, that's the part I prefer anyway. I'm not doing this Channel with any ambition of giving it a mass appeal, I just want to enjoy myself, so I'll keep on diving into history and mechanics. From time to time I'll have fun with a top 5 though, it's just entertaining to make to be honest. Regarding Liberty Roads, I'm ready when you are, on Vassal+Discord or if we meet in a convention!

There was a point to point game before Washington's War. It was published in Strategy and Tactics in the 70's. It was called Tito or something. I still have my copy unpunched I have dozens of old unpunched S&T games. My all time favorite wargame is Victory Lost. Most played, A Victory Denied. But I also love Stonewall Jackson's Way even though Ive only played the learning scenarios. But so many other great wargameing experiences. It's the industry that never disapoints. When I find a game that's broken on one side. I use it for beginners to take the over strong side. I wish there were pupose built scenarios to give beginners overwhelming power. I'm I'm thinking France 1940. Yes, France 1940 is a modern enigma. However, a postmodernist approach would make an amazing game.
