Hello everyone!
I am of the opinion, that Warhammer needs to come down in price.
The question I ask today is; "How expensive does it have to get, before you can't afford it anymore?"
Is £50 for 10 space marines acceptable?
£60?
£70?
At what point, can price increases no longer be justified?
Comment down below.

I don’t mind spending $60 for 10 intercessors models. What really makes me mad is paying $60 for 3 aggressors. $6/model is high but reasonable, but $20/model is absolutely ridiculous! If their was a tiered cost based on the number of models in the box like $60/10 models, $45/5 models, and $30/3 models, and $20/ model for basic characters I feel like that’d be a far more reasonable pricing system.

It's getting close in the US. The GW arbitrage is obscene. We don't have a multitude of Warhammer storefronts to support the hobby, leaving us to frequent local game shops and a rapidly diminishing and motley assortment of gaming clubs to find people to play with and a place to hang out. Tomb King on Necrolith in UK is £60. Tomb Guard is £47.50 Those ancient skellies are also £47.50 At actual exchange rates, that necrolith is $77.19 and the tomb Guard or skellies are $61.11 That's not at all cheap, but it's equally irritating for a British or American gamer. GW, however, has always had a predatory relationship with the North American market and even their own employees in the US. Through arbitrage, the necrolith is $100 and the tomb Guard and skellies are $80. At that point, GW has priced a lot of people completely out of the hobby entirely. The throng of working class kids from the '80s and '90s, like how I entered the hobby, can't really hang now. It's now a luxury hobby and is drawing players who can afford it, and they're not "throngs" like they once were.
@fenreer01

Note: if the arbitrage US price was converted to the pound, the ancient skellie box would cost £62.18 for 36 minis older than two-thirds of the TOW players. When those sprues were originally released, they were able to be purchased with the average kid's weekly allowance from mowing grandma's lawn, or close to it. Does your neighbor's granny pay the kid 62 quid to cut the grass today?

I'm already basically out. I've been buying used models as cheap as I can or printing proxies. But hell, I can't even afford the books for Warhammer the Old World. I'm lookong more at either buying older rules or using One Page Rules equivalent games.

I've tapped out of the retail prices and only buying if no alternative exists. I'm buying from 3rd party retailers when I can get a discount and I stock up for longer periods and then buy nothing until another sale comes along

Warhammer isnt expensive. Its overpriced. You can compare the product to other similar things because the fundamentals are the same at the end of the day. And the price increases exceed inflation. I have seen, firsthand and in person people who would otherwise be into the game massively be turned away by the pricing. A single character (a small plastic figurine effectively) can cost the same as a tank of gas, a portion of groceries, etc. We are effectively in a declining/failing economy and gw prices their products like everyone's casually eating a 10 ounce steak. For me personally, i will only buy officially to help out my local game store (like once a month).

Its a problem for people trying to even get IN to Warhammer too. Just go get enough variety to play a normal game is ridiculously pricy now you cant do it without spending a ridiculous amount. If i wanted to buy enough to afford just 1500 points, that's two months of groceries.

They're on the brink atm; I feel 12 euros for a metal character is doable; but 30 for resin infantry character is hella overpriced. Tomb Scorpions and the Catapult are on the borderline imho, though supposedly the catapult got an update?

I guess one could reprhase the question; "are you buying just a miniature or do you expect it to be backed up with a actually good game?" In the latter case there are so many better options.

I’ve been referring to GW as “my ex” for a few years now. I’ve taken old models and put them to use in other games, Frostgrave, Stargrave, Space Weirdos. I play other games like Gaslands, Battletech and WWII tank games. I also don’t “chase the dragon” with MTG either. I’m free of meta, FoMO and tournaments. When I sit down to hobby, I use models and kit bash how I want. Wargames Atlantic, Northstar Miniatures and others are great kits, at affordable prices. When I sit down to game, I have a small ruleset and have fun. We make our own stories and laugh. Gaming without multi million dollar, manipulative companies is freeing and enlightening, you just have to be brave enough to say no.

I just started exploring warhammer after a few years of mini painting. Warhammer definitely charges a premium to say the least. And their pricing makes no sense, and some of it shows they just massively overprice certain packs seemingly at random. The Warhammer 40k 10e starter set was like $100 and comes with basically the space marine combat patrol (minus the librarian) *AND* 30 tyranids. How does the space marine combat patrol, with 30 less miniatures, cost $60 more than the 10e starter set?

I would argue for folks looking to get into the hobby, the price is already too high. At this point I think GW is coasting on existing customers that are "in too deep" to feel like they can back out. That's not a good place to be.

To answer the video's question -- I've already tapped out. I'm retired and can't just pop in for some overtime to cover paying $45 (after tax) for 60 points of ground pounders.

One angle not often talked about is how the miniature gaming / painting hobby is a bit weirdly volatile in and of itself. Many hobbyists go through cycles of buying a lot of physical products like models, then cool off for a long time while painting or playing a lot of games with a finished army. It can be tough to predict how much product will sell and at what times. This is an issue everyone deals with. It is why certain models dry up in the supply chain for years at a time even though they're technically "in print". Part of the problem GW has, is they've always been chaotic and bad at reading the market. Uncharitably, this is a bit due to greed. They want to sell models more than be a gaming company interacting with players as a community. They may not keep enough of a finger on the pulse of what people want as overall hobbyists, not just consumers of new model kits. See: their continued lack of care with testing and balancing before printing and selling expensive books. That become invalidated on day one with errata out before the book is in stores. At any rate, I think the next five years or so, well be very interesting. GW is clearly pushing at the edge of acceptable pricing and more people than ever before are dropping out of buying new models. 3D printing, despite advances, is still not there yet for the average person. However the day is drawing closer. The moment a more user-friendly 3D printing solution is achieved, then at last the game is afoot. If you think there's plenty of proxy models for Warhammer available now, you haven't seen anything. Once "everyone" has a 3D printer, it will be impossible for GW to stamp out or keep at bay.

While you’re not wrong about upkeep costs existing, that’s not what causes price hikes. It’s corporate greed. Companies the world over are always trying to outdo their previous quarter’s numbers. It’s an unsustainable, infinite growth model that they use to make more money for ceos and shareholders.

Was going to write a bunch about how shit the company is but hearing the brag of bows being made in the 90s being revolutionary, when they existed since minis did back in the early 1900s and everything was tin. Pointing out how horrible the prices are and the practices of the company is like pointing out Cyberpunk was an unplayable game at launch. My skaven army if it was all store bought would of cost me more then my first car.

Starting a Kill-Team league and am explicitly allowing proxies for this purpose. "Official miniatures only" was a courtesy the consumers extended to Games Workshop based on a mutually beneficial relationship--unfortunately, the continuous gouging on GW's end constitutes a betrayal of that relationship, so the gloves are off. Proxy whatever you want, wherever you want.

I've been gaming since the 1970s. Historicals / other fantasy has _always_ been cheaper, but current GW prices are insane. I can buy entire WWII platoons in metal for what some 40k 10 figures squad packs in plastic cost. But - if you want to play GW games, then it's going to cost what it costs. The real rich man's game though, is 28mm mass battle Napoleonics. ;) Happy gaming whatever you chose to play.

Models are damn expensive now, but people have been copying miniatures for a long time. They can be crap sometimes, let's put it that way. But the community is growing and sharing the best of the casting artists. And gradually the use of “fake” miniatures is becoming less and less shameful, as more and more players begin to wake up and realize that buying overpriced British plastic is stupid and expensive.

I'm mostly used to thinking in terms of dollar menu cheeseburgers so hearing about space marines costing 50 Squids or whatever is going over my head. But I am building off the starter set and yeah my 1k army list is definitely changing based on points per model ratios. Shame that the chapter based combat patrols are so awful at catering to the acual units their chapters want.

To be honest I left GW behind me for the final time early 2018. I came back due to GW essentially saying all the right things and looking like they were going to be heading in the "right" direction on the run up to 8th Edition. Prior to 8th some friends got me into Kill Team late on in 7th edition and I found a new enthusiasm for the game, this was after leaving GW a few months after 4th edition dropped. When it comes to cost, GW has been steadily pricing itself out of the market for years and even when I came back late in 7th I felt it too expensive for what it was but it was friends that drew me back into it. Putting my feelings to one side of a moment, GW has already rendered itself too expensive for me and when you see articles popping up on hobby sites about the cost of getting an army (tournament points) to the table being £1k plus for the main product lines, yea... pull the other one. These days I've had enough of how GW treat their community and that is something that has got progressively worse over the years. I'm also sick to the back teeth of GW's approach towards "specialist" games where they launch a product only to abandon it in short order. I can understand if it's a product that doesn't sell but there are many titles under the GW umbrella which were arbitrarily abandoned. These attitudes become progressively worse when you look at their treatment of content creators and their overall fanbase. It's local communities that keep GW alive. If more communities moved away to other systems such as those from Mantic, Warlord, Catacylsm etc, then this would apply pressure on GW to do better but any such endeavour would take time and a focused effort which simply isn't there.

I get the whole "this is too expensive" point, but remember GWs goal isn't to sell more *models* it's to make more *profit*. Rumour has it that GW factory is already at capacity, they can't sell more models than they already are to make more money, so they just need to sell what they do already at a higher price. They do not care if most people can't afford. Is it sustainable? Hopefully not and there will be a course correction with prices staying stagnant as inflation reduces the cost (they'll never lower the prices). Hopefully with increased production so we're not chasing FOMO releases.

Theres a reason most people start at a age where they have more hair in their ears then head. I just hope kill team is fun, because thats the only box i might get my friend grp to buy. 4 combat patrols is more then 10-15 good boardgames. And 2kpt game is 40-60 games, and its not great having 4-5 different squadsxD What really pissed me off is the core book, started reading it yesterday and so far its just a written ad for citydel productsxD get your citydel brushes with a wide selection of citydel paints.or maybe you just want to build some minis make sure to get some citydel tools....

I’d be interested to see if another price increase is around the corner. I think it is down to us as consumers to stop over consuming! I also personally find GW's "pricing-by-points-value" to be obscenely offensive as a customer. Really? You're just going to price your product based on an imaginary, arbitrary "value" that YOU assign to it? I personally can't believe there hasn't been more outrage about this.

The ironic part is that by increasing prices, they reduce the number of consumers. If they made the game price reasonable, they'd sell far more, I know I'd buy more, and I know of 2 people that would buy in too. GW are out of touch, that's the issue.

As an Australian, the “too expensive” point was a solid 50 dollars ago. Frankly to see such overpriced bullshit for a game that frankly doesn’t even deserve the title “game” is not only an insult to common decency and taste, it’s a fetid accusation to the common person that she doesn’t even have a right to a space that can be so much more when you look past the decrepit pitfalls of James Workshit
