Warhead 007 - The James Bond Film That Never Was

One of the most fascinating chapters in the James Bond cinematic saga is the story of Warhead, a 007 film that almost was, then wasn't, then kinda was, then almost was again a couple times, then never was. Developed in the 1970s by Kevin McClory, Len Deighton, and the O.G. Bond Sean Connery, Warhead was meant to be a grittier take on the Bond franchise, with some truly crazy elements thrown in for good measure. It became a casualty of war between conflicting creative forces, leaving us to wonder what could have been and just how and why this movie went unmade. It eventually “kinda” got made as Never Say Never Again in 1983, but what was made was very different from what was intended: perhaps thankfully.

At the time, Dalton was really disliked by many Bond fans. Even myself when I saw LICSCENCE TO KILL, which I think is one of the five best Bond films ever, I felt he just did not seem right for the role. He had a certain for me effeminite quality, but this is also what made LISCENCE TO KILL so interesting, as the lead villain seemed to fall in love with JAMES BOND, and made it more believeable. LIVING DAYLIGHT for me was great in the first half, and bad in the second. The first half reminded me of the best of Sean Connery Bond, the second the worst of Roger Moore Bond.

At one point they wanted to make a SECOND Thunderball remake. I think it was gonna be called “Warhead 2000” they considered casting as Bond either Timothy Dalton, a former Bond, or Liam Neeson, who was also at one point considered for Bond by EON.

Nice and informative. I wonder if we will ever get to the bottom of Danny Boyle’s vision for No Time To Die. From what I’ve heard, his ideas would wild and strangely relevant… also he never would have killed off Bond.

That's Cold War cinema for you... Back when pop culture reflected people's fears of the outbreak of nuclear war any day. (Sucks that James Bond didn't get to punch Nikita Kruschev or Fidel Castro right in the face, like Captain America did to Hitler in his first issue cover.)
