Eldritch Invocations are arguably the most variable Warlock class feature in DND 5e and each of the over 50 different options (Including those from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar's Guide to Everything) can easily make or break your warlock depending on your build. So let’s consider the invocations you won’t want to miss out on as well as some that you should.

It's insane to me that wizards came up with this system for warlock, requiring them to write up so many unique invocation options. Almost like writing up a second feat list for only one class. It's so much work, compared to the amount of writing and thought other classes get.

I have to say take Devil's Sight every single time. You will _always_ need to deal with darkness and being able to combine Eldritch Blast with Devil's Sight is amazing since there are a number of powerful creatures that can cast Darkness, thinking it will give them some kind of tactical advantage at range over you and/or your party. Even if the rest of your party is blinded by a Darkness spell, being able to hit back at a range of 120 feet while your party members deal with the Darkness will always throw off a magical attacker. Especially flying Oni (speaking from personal experience). "Surprise! In brightest day and darkest night, no evil will escape my sight!"

@@ConstructedChaos Having played multiple warlocks in home and AL games... it doesn't work as well in practice as it seem on paper. 1. You rarely operate at ranges over 60'. Dungeon rooms typically aren't that big, enemies can't see those distances, other party members are going to close anyway. 2. Casting darkness almost always nerfs your own party. Other players at the table will resent the heck out of you for turning a 20 minute combat into an hour of folks repeatedly wasting their turns, while you essentially solo the module. In reality... most would rather just take the damage and ensure a regular fight. Even if I took darkness and devil's sight, I rarely casted it and almost always as a last ditch nerf to when the party was about to die -- often ending concentration after they spend a couple of rounds healing. 3. By 5th, and certainly 7th-level, there are far better spells to cast anyway. Improved invisibility gives the same benefits without nerfing your allies. Flying can make you invulnerable to all melee attacks without nerfing your allies. Polymorphing into a great ape gives you far more attacks/damage/defenses. In a solo, or an party with multiple warlocks... maybe. In most of my play, it was an emergency backup with was far to disruptive at the table to use.

I'm currently playing in the Campaign and here are the fights that we had up to level 5 1-3 level fight with crabs - all ok 4 level - fight with revived armor and furniture (they have no eyes), boss with true sight 5 level - a couple of fights with bosses. true and blind sight everyone. in all sessions I had only 2 convenient opportunities to impose darkness so that to get an advantage from this invocation. So on paper yes, it's great, in practice it's as luck would have it. The same thing happened with Hunger of Hadar - I cast it on a large crowd of people, anticipating that they would now take damage. But a flying enemy in the turn following mine flew towards me and gave me an attack. I cast Concentration - it drops 1. I cast it a second time - it drops 1 again. In the end, no one took damage and I lost a cell. Although in theory, the spell is very powerful.

I'm running a creation bard/warlock multiclass right now who took misty visions. It has comes in handy a ton. He uses it to illustrate his points when he is persuading. It is basically his thoughts manifesting as illusions, then if he concentrates he can physically create them with his creation bard powers. I Respectfully disagree with your statement. The usefulness of this invocation exceeds the AC bonus. It is basically armor without wearing armor. There is no max to your dex bonus to AC. You don't have to put it on or take it off, making rest easier and never getting caught without your armor on. It is armor in social situations, where armor is not permitted or strongly frowned upon. Mage armor is an 8 hour spell, at will, there is essentially no reason to not have this on all the time, with no spell slot. It also does not add encumbrance, so if str is a dump stat, you still have no issue carrying stuff. For wizards and sorcs as a feat, this invocation is only less superior to devil's sight.

Tomb of Levistus is clutch if you lose concentration on Fly when you're way up in the air. It's also useful against crits, against hits that would drop you to zero HP, and against really powerful boss abilities that are on a recharge (like a Dragon's breath weapon). It was a very fun invocation to use. It does make you lose concentration on your spell, but if you were going to take 40+ damage in one hit, you probably weren't going to maintain concentration on the spell anyways.

Honestly the biggest advantage of eldritch mind vs war caster didn’t get addressed in the video- the fact an invocation is much less valuable than a feat. For a warlock who doesn’t care about using weapons the ‘weapon as spellcasting focus’ doesn’t matter and the spell as opportunity attack is nice but also not going to turn up a whole lot. So you basically get the best part of war caster for the much less valuable invocation. So really the benefit is the best part of war caster plus… another feat of your choice, or even a bump to charisma or whatever other stat you want. It’s one of the best options imo

Be Me: A warlock with a Great Old One patron... 1st Invocations: Devil Sight and Beast Speech... I can see perfectly well in the dark and I can always speak to animals. I start by finding any rats I can find, as well as birds. I start making deals for information, simple stuff really. I give bits of food to any animal with information on the goings on in the city. I develop a nearly untraceable information network, especially because I can do ALL my communication telepathically. Then I include cats in the network by feeding them the rats or birds who trick me (if they became that crafty), and dogs get the cheap bones as snacks. I expand further and further until I have hawk eyes, cat ears, and dog noses all over the city. Oh, it will cost a pretty penny to feed them all, but the information I might gather could pay for itself. Back alley deals, illegal activities, illicit adultery, violence and murder, maybe even the occasional case of necromancy... Very useful for blackmail, becoming the city's new secret crime lord, or perhaps handing information to the just authorities (*gagging noises*). Granted, this depends on having a prolonged base of operations and a VERY willing DM... but this is also just the extreme. All kinds of information can still be gained from communicating with animals. You can show pictures of your target for them to find, or scents for them to track, all for the price of food and perhaps some good scritches and belly rubs. Imagine being able to communicate and "tame" almost any animal you meet. You could have a whole team of dogs or wolves at your call, as well as hawks or owls. They aren't your familiars or your summons, but they will obey you if you give them food and shelter because that is simply how normal training works. You would just be cheating the usual time investment since you can ACTUALLY communicate with them all the time to explain quite specifically what you want. A warlock can out druid any druid... or a druid can make a deal with an otherworldly power as a feat to become the greatest of all. But as a simple warlock of any type... you can TOTALLY have a pack of wolves around for each of your adventures, maybe even a bear and an eagle or two. Your DM will probably hate you for it though, especially if you start adding barding to the game. Why stop there? Swarm of rats, tigers, giant apes, venomous snakes, giant spiders, bats (for epic blindsight), and just possibly a dinosaur. Though... maybe invest in a bag of holding or two for all the food you'll need to carry around. Do NOT underestimate speak with animals. Simply having dogs for tracking purposes or a bat for searching can change everything... just talk with your DM. If they're on board, they might reward you for your creativity. My personal belief is to not treat your DM like an enemy, but rather a partner in the story you want to tell. If they won't have fun with what you're planning... then maybe that's a sign the story won't be one you WANT to be told. I would ALSO like to add there are MANY ways to outplay this type of play. Simple prestidigiation could remove ANY scent to track, and animals might find it difficult to differentiate faces (especially with a bad perception check), and there is ALWAYS the chance they could lie, depending on how fed up or playful your DM is. They could also fail their checks just as you would, and you'd STILL need to feed them, so it could quickly become a net loss at medium or higher levels of play. Add in the fact that animals won't always get along, and you could start losing your little "army" to infighting and simple predation. Because... these are stile WILD animals. Still, I never pass up on the opportunity to multi-class without multi-classing. I love playing a class like its another class entirely, and a warlock that should have by ALL rights been a druid tickles my fancy so much. Have a good one everybody!

Something I never hear mentioned when discussing darkvision vs devil's sight. Dim Light is a lightly obscured area. Creatures make perception checks in these areas with disadvantage, if they rely on sight. Darkvision allows you to see in nonmagical darkness as if it were dim light and dim light as if it were bright light (you are still making perception checks with disadvantage in total darkness, if they rely on sight). Devil's Sight you see normally (effectively ignoring the darkness entirely) without disadvantage! So not only is devil's sight longer range than most creatures' darkvision, and in full color, and works in magical darkness, you are also not rolling with disadvantage in total darkness, like most creatures should be

It's a great system when the campaign has a very telegraphed theme to it that ISNT combat. @@TheRobversion1 infusions use the system that I suggested. You can have two active at 2nd level but you know 4 of them. This is out of the 9 options at level 2 btw, so you have access to almost half of the available options. There are far more invocations and you can only pick 2...and any build that uses eldritch blast feels pretty bad not taking the invocations that enhance it. For the record, I was just thinking of the players handbook classes, where warlock is unique in this regard. Clearly, they have done a better job of the newer stuff for artificer and mystic...but they haven't fixed the warlock. The key is to give the player the ability to pick enough options that they can pick one or two strong ones and then feel comfortable going for flavor and fun after that..which is why spells also do not have this problem. You get access to so many, that you can take some niche stuff without feeling bad.
@rjmdraco2592
@rjmdraco2592 2 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that the difference is thematic in nature. An artificer UNDERSTANDS their craft, so they can adjust their infusions accordingly. Warlocks are GIVEN their abilities as a transaction. That MEANS something. It's why they can't adjust their abilities on the fly, why they have several limited abilities. They took the easiest possible route to power and it shows. They are also supposed to be beholden to their patron's desires, but not all DM's work with that theme. There is SUPPOSED to be this underlying feeling of permanence, of consequences to your choices. You've made a deal for power, so you will face the fact that things will no longer be entirely in your control. I'm afraid that Wizards of the Coast is heading in the direction you're describing, because having too much adaptability cheapens the choices you make. There are some things I might change, but I don't want to forget that underlying theme. Personally, I would rather have a third spell slot, or better yet, a slot for the patron spells instead. Like, you can cast one spell from your patron spell list once per short rest. Early game, this gives you a third slot, but late game, this means you can only use any of your patron spells ONCE instead of letting them use your normal slots. I'd say this feels pretty balanced, personally, especially since those patron spells compete with your spells known too.
@TheRobversion1
@TheRobversion1 2 жыл бұрын
@@bonzwah1 technically the phb options also include the battlemaster and 4E monk. anyway i do agree about this design wise though i'd take it a step further. knowing alot of niche stuff doesn't really matter if you have few invocations used slots as people will just equip the good ones and the known stuff get stuck on the bench. knowing more doesn't matter if you can't use them unless they are like spells wherein you can use any of them at any given time. what i'd do is classify invocations to in combat/out of combat. a warlock would get the current scaling for invocatons (1 every 2 levels) that could be used in combat. they also get a scaling non-combat invocation allotment that can used on invocations such as beast speech or mask of many faces. like perhaps 1 non-combat invocation every 3 or 4 levels.

Aren't spellbooks in runes most of the time? You can read languages but if the book is in code you won't have a clue what you're reading. Basically, it'd be like trying to workout the solution to an Algebra equation without knowing how it works, you can read it all you want but if you don't know the mechanics behind the language then it's like trying to write in Mandarin using pristine grammatical accuracy while not having a clue what language you're even trying to write with.

@@Mesteryman1 Reading and understanding are very different. IF you know the cipher sure but you're moving the goalposts a bit by now adding the cipher to begin with. If you simply pick up the book then reading it won't help you. It's just as you can read Thieves cant on a wall all you want it doesn't mean you'll understand the true meaning of it. Code is not language. "Guvf vf na rapelcgrq fragrapr hfvat gur Ratyvfu ynathntr." I used the English language to create this encrypted sentence, now you can easily read each letter, especially since you know it's in English, so please understand the code. I've no idea what kind of games you run or play in but I don't typically magically know things I've never encountered or could not* have encountered beforehand.
@Mesteryman1
@Mesteryman1 Жыл бұрын
@@jnewgot The point I'm making is that a code in a language uses specific letter movements and is not a random jumble, thus you could with the right amount of time, break that code and discover the true meaning behind it. It's a skill check like any other and I never said it was an instant "You know all the spells in this book now" I said you could make the check to try and break the code. there is a big difference between being able to read the writing in it's literal translation and being able to see through any cipher someone created. Furthermore there is a feat that actually lays out the mechanics of just coding messages and has an intelligence check to break that code if you can read the language. I don't even allow a check to decipher a spellbook until you can read the language in my games. I never "Moved the goalposts" I said with the invocation you didn't have the language barrier to being able to TRY and understand. I don't know what game you run or play in but being able to read a language through magic doesn't give you the answers to riddles or other puzzles. Finally, to address a previous comment; most spellbooks are written in an actual language not in a runic script that only wizards know. This means that if you can read the language or languages it is written in you could START to TRY and understand the code it is likely buried under and then MAKE A SKILLCHECK to break the code and begin learning spells from the book. This would be time consuming and likely take a long time of in game roleplay to do. PS. Most arcane casters are paranoid about people learning their magic and thus would use some form of code or trickery to throw you off being able to understand it, so it is not out the ballpark for a warlock to assume that a wizard's spellbook is encrypted by some means. Also there is a skill called arcana that would likely tell you that the book is encrypted. Or maybe they know an actual wizard who encrypted their spellbook and thus assumes all wizards do it. This really isn't obscure knowledge in any way so yes they could easily get to a point that they make a check for it. You made a lot of assumptions that seemed to point to the fact you believed I had any notion that this was a instant win hack when it is not, I only said you could get the very first barrier out of the way.

One note about Lifedrinker which you didn't mention and, honestly, I've seen other GMs and players miss: Hex Warrior lets you already add your charisma modifier to your damage roll. Lifedrinker then DOUBLES it. So let's do some theory crafting, level 11 warlock, you have a +1 pact weapon from other invocations or you just found one, and a +5 charisma bonus. And let's say it's a polearm and you took Polearm Master because you're min-maxing. So while true you may be doing only 2 attacks per round, it's 2x(1d10+11) + 1d4+11 so 2d10+1d4+33, averaging 48 damage. Then add in anything from your greater ability to provoke opportunity attacks, especially if you double-up with the Sentinel feat, the damage-spike-nova of Eldrtich Smite, etc. With Agonizing Eldritch Blast, that's 3x(1d10+6) or 36 damage. Then it's not until level 17 you get the fourth beam, bringing it to 48, matching what you were already doing at 11.

3:33 Its mechanical benefit is MASSIVE. The crafting rules say they give their number of days assuming an 8 hour workday while crafting. You don't need to sleep for 8 hours every night anymore, so effectively you've gained an 8 hour work day, as long as it's light activity. Scribing a spell scroll is light activity. Scribing a 1st level spell scroll takes 1 day, i.e. take 8 hours of work, i.e. the duration of a typical long rest. Taking Aspect of the Moon means as long as you have the materials, you can make a 1st level spell scroll every night. Or you can even work on something multiple nights. It could be a 2nd level scroll every 3 nights or a 3rd level scroll every week. Warlock slots grow with level. Several of their spells do not, or do not in a way that is often negligible. Hex, for instance, is a 1st level spell, thus would take 8 hours, i.e. 1 long rests worth of time to craft. And using a scroll would save yourself wasting one of your 2-3 4th or 5th slots on it. Depending on party composition, you can even have the wizard learn the spell you scribe so you can trade it for another spell at level up, or just so you both have it in cases like find familiar and counterspell.
@ConstructedChaos

You make a sound point here! Admittedly I hadn't thought about this. However, during a long rest, you'll still only be capable of "light" activity. One With Shadows is extremely good for avoiding detection when sneaking. Invisibility has verbal components, so you might not be able to use it in some situations. And Shroud of Shadow only becomes available at level 15, so you might not want to spend your very limited spell slots on going invisible. One With Shadows is great because you can stay invisible indefinitely, go invisible without a spell slot or verbal components, and you can stay invisible even if there's bright light. You can tell from the carvings on the walls that you will need to find a special sacred runestone if you want to learn the language." and I responded with "My character can read it because he has eyes of the rune keeper." and the GM hit me with "Uh........ *checks notes* It's written in a cypher you can read but don't understand." and he only said that so we could go find the McGuffin he planned for us to get to read the book. It was honestly such a dick move because it essentially made my choice to take that invocation irrelevant.

Yeahhhhh stuff like this can be difficult. I have had situations like this pop up as a DM and I often--if not always--look at it as a shortcoming on my end when I don't anticipate this kind of thing. It's important to be intimately aware of what your players are capable of so that you can adequately reward situations like this. Or, at least be ready to pivot and improvise. I do currently have a player in our campaign that used comprehend languages to try and read something I didn't expect them to decipher. I ruled similarly to your DM as it is not necessarily a language and has more of an arcane nature. Eyes of the runekeeper doesn't have this restriction but I can understand your DM's hesitance here. So, since I've played some devil's advocate here, let me explain my takeaway as both a DM and a Player: Player options should be respected and rewarded, absolutely. But, homebrew DMs do also have a pretty tall order in understanding every rule and every aspect of your game. If this is an outlying event, I would guess that your DM was just trying to keep the session fun for you all. If they didn't have anything prepared for the session beyond this McGuffin, it's likely that the session would have suffered as a result. It's weird because I don't agree with what they did but I can understand why they did it, potentially. If this is something that happens often, it's worth having a problem with. If not, maybe cut your DM a little slack here :)

I read some forums saying that any spell that has the ritual tag can be cast as a ritual by casting it with 10 min of extra time but the feats and features that let you cast a spell as if it were a ritual just let you cast them immediately, I don't know if that was wrong or something cause in this video you say that the book of the ancients "allows" them to cast rituals and this contradicts what I just said
@ConstructedChaos

That's true enough but you need to also be aware of the fact that spellcasters can only cast ritual spells if they have the ability to. It is not an innate ability of spellcasters to be able to cast ritual spells--therefore, the warlock does need to get access to ritual casting in order to be allowed to do it.

Eldritch spear+spell sniper is only like 600ft. While I could respect that in a forest 600 ft is a long distance and you can't see that far but that's only because trees grow in a very sporadic pattern. 600 ft is not that far to say that your vision would be too poor to hit it. You can target creatures using your sight up too 2miles aways on a clear day without any terrain in the way like hills and forest, and up to 1 mile away when it's raining so it's safe to say you could easily use the 600ft eldritch blast, however in most campaigns it would be rare, except for hunting/foraging, that you'd be allowed to engage an enemy that far. I've been looking at these because I've wanted to try Warlock. The idea I had was a Fire Genasi The Fathomless Pact of the Blade Warlock that will subclass into Barbarian. I was looking at Agonizing Blast and Armor of Shadows at level 2. Trading Armor for Improved Pact Blade at 3rd level. At 5th I would add Thirsting Blade. I would then start putting levels into Barbarian, maybe enough to get an ASI or 5th level but not quite sure. I'm hoping to have a decent mix of long range and close range options. Also quick question: when it says 15th level for the evocations level requirement does that mean Warlock level or Character level? It makes a difference when you want to do multiclassing and I am a little unclear.
@TheRobversion1
@TheRobversion1 2 жыл бұрын
all invocations require warlock level. i'd definitely recommened 2-4 barb only. barb is one of those classes where less is more and they are best used as a dip class. if you're just looking for close range options, you don't even have to go to barb (unless you're a str based character) as there's enough close range options on the warlock or on better classes like the fighter.

@TheRobversion1
@TheRobversion1 2 жыл бұрын
@@jettblade that's fair enough though i'd definitely say optimization and interesting/characters arent mutually exclusive. characters are your bonds, flaws, goals, motivation, backstory. it's not your build. you can have an optimized build that's an interesting character (this is what i do). for example sticking with the fathomless, my 1st optimized fathomless warlock was designed around answering the question "How would it be if Ursula would have a redemption arc in dnd?" yes the disney princess villain. it was fun (i had to learn disney songs and sing), i was evil to being with (going from the ending of the little mermaid), had an interesting character arc involving loss, sacrifice and self-realization and was a badass in combat (optimized). so going back to your build, whatever route you go with barbarian will not determine how interesting your character is. how you RP and how you created that character determines that. now going back to the mechanics, i mentioned stopping at 2-4 because you said you're picking up thirsting blade anyway. that and extra attack doesnt stack. along of course with the fact that barbs don't get strong abilities after level 2.
@khuri9030
@khuri9030 Жыл бұрын
No real need to go Barb 5 if you are going Blade Pact, unless it is pure flavor. 1, you cannot cast spells while raging. 2, Rage damage is only applied when using Str for attacking, so unless you go a heavy Str build for this class going to skimp on other stats. 3, Thirsting Blade at level 5 gives you Extra Attack, so unless you have a set plan for Invocations up to that point, Thirsting Blade is the best choice for Blade Pact then.

@@ConstructedChaos ah i see. well when i DM i guess i never found it a bother as i tend to be descriptive (or remind myself to be haha) and the way i use traps is i dont like surprising players with it often but more of it's part of the combat. for example: there's a macguffin at the center of the room, the floor is clearly trapped and undead will continue to pour in round after round until the macguffin is removed. the floor then would definitely show as magical coming from different schools but the players won't have much time to plan around it because combat starts as soon as they enter the room (the 1st wave of undead comes in) and step on the 1st tile. then the trapped floor tiles all do different things that it won't matter that the player identifies them as magical. the key will be identifying what the traps do. some will teleport them randomly, some are pit traps, some will pepper them with elemental damage, some will trap the player in place, etc. and there are clues of course that if the player decides to fly or teleport (not step on the traps) the whole room would fill with water to drown them even if the macguffin is removed. so in essence there's no need to surprise players with traps as going through the traps is essential to getting through the combat encounter (finding ways to use the traps against the wave of undead or figuring out which traps to trigger to create a path towards the macguffin that will harm the party the least).

I understand that you can not just change the invocations freely. However I do find it a bit absurd that you can only change them and spells for that matter when you level. I do however think that it would be sensible for the character to be able to change an invocation though a weeks work/study, or perhaps two~four weeks. Or perhaps though a significant offering to their patron or by spending time connecting to their patron.. just something like that. It seems to me that would free up a warlock player so they can try out various options and stuff, rather than having to pick up the absolutely needed invocations right away as not to miss out. A warlock is not a wizard, so it should not be easy for the warlock character to change. However the very fact that you can change when you level up seems to indicate to me that this really should not be quite so restrained as it is. I wonder as well, if Eldrich Blast should not be demoted to 1d8, with all the invocation modifications unlocked. However you must similarly spend time to swap out what buff you equip to it. As it levels you could have more buff slots allowing you to use your eldrich blast to do the stuff you currently need the invocations to do... I guess I am saying, I basically think the Eldrich Blast's invocations should be put in its own little system. ... I would for that matter like to see a LOT more options as well. Really build and dig into that 'modify yourself' thing warlock got going for it. That is another thing. Why just why? I understand why you can not slow something several times. But would slowing 4 creatures by 10 for a round really be that broken up in the higher levels? And grasp of Hadar. Is dragging something 40 feet toward you really THAT much better than pushing something 40 feet away? Or rather, is dragging 4 creatures 10 feet toward you really game breaking? Then how about just reducing the amount you can drag something to 5 per hit? At higher levels it would only be 10 feet more. But you could theoretically do more controll nonsense moving up to 4 characters in various directions. "You come 5 feet closer, you come 10 feet closer, and you go 10 feet away. And lets say all four of you are now also slowed by 10 feet. Or perhaps one could have the same thing for speed. 4 hits would mean up to 20 feet movement would be lost for the enemy. Although I can see that being broken. 20 foot slow and 40 foot push. Then again we already have 10 foot slow and 40 foot push so...

I think it's somewhat reasonable that you can't change invocations but I'd be open to a mechanic that allows you to change them at any point you would take an ASI or Feat (similar to other class features). As for the E-blast nerf, I could get behind it. But I think they're planning to make it a class feature and not a cantrip in the next edition (which makes more sense to me). Finally, all the movement shenanigans that you get off of E-blast is fantastic--even at higher levels when creatures have 60ft movement speeds and such--because you can use all of these abilities in consort and reliably keep them out of melee range if need be or maneuver them into disadvantageous positions. Anyway, I hope I answered everything here! There was a lot but I don't think I missed anything.

If you have a familiar (Pact of the Chain or Tome) then taking Sign of Ill Omen plus Relentless Hex at 8th level by either switching an earlier invocation or taking the Eldritch Adept feat means that you can cast Bestow Curse on your familiar, ordering it to "not resist" (i.e., fail the save). This means that, starting at 9th level, you get EIGHT HOURS of free, unlimited Misty Step (or it's "I'm not casting a spell" equivalent). Or seven hours once you've recovered your spell slots. Since short range teleports like this are really not a good investment for a class with so few spell slots, I actually *WOULD* recommend Sign of Ill Omen ... for this specific purpose. (Give the familiar the crappy "Disadvantage to Attack YOU" curse; it shouldn't be attacking you anyway) 😉
@TheRobversion1
@TheRobversion1 2 жыл бұрын
i don't get that last line of recommending sign of ill omen. the bestow curse cast here would use your pact slots. i would understand though if you recommended it since it's non-concen (unlike bane/hex) and isn't a limited use ability best used on enemies (like hexblade's curse). with that said while a fun combo on paper, in practice having used this it's quite clunky as you can "misty step" to where your familiar is so you're limited to having to wait for your familiar to take its turn, move your familiar to the spot you want to teleport to then you'd have to wait for your next turn to do it. out of combat it's great but definitely not worth it for combat.

i'd disagree for in combat use. burning your action every turn just to gain devil sight means your will be most likely useless in combat. furthermore, take note, even without the voice of the chainmaster you can already do this on the base familiar. the difference is voice of the chainmaster upgrades the distance (anywhere on the same plane upgraded form 100 ft of you). voice of the chainmaster isn't really that good as it does 2 things: 1. you can speak through your familiar (new). 2. improvement distance of using action to see through your familiar senses (upgrade). I'd say it was as good as devil's sight if it removed the action per turn requirement to see through your familiar's senses.

When taking Hexbladepact Warlocks second and third Level at 7th and 8th Level overall, you have acess to Relentless Hex and Thirsting Blade, which can be a Hand Crossbow - just mind the Loading Property here. If you wanna go Abserd with this: Add in a Paladin(2) and Fighter(2), Divination Wizzard(2) and Star Druid(2) and Divine Soul Sorcerer you have a pretty freaky Build for a Melee-Caster. Keep in mind, you can Pick Spells your Class has acess to a Slot for. So, only the Locky-Spells are limited. Wizzard allows you to freely choose additional Spells to choose from to cast, Star Druid is just fluffy Cool in the Appearance. You have 2 Fighting Styles, a Second Wind, an Action Surge, 2 Attacks per Attack Action, can Smite, have 2 D20-Rolls in your Pocket you can force on any Roll and have Acess to the Cleric Spell List via Sorc (Spirit Guardians is mandatory as learning Counterspell and Shield via Wizzard). Have fun getting thrown out of evey Group righteously.

I'm playing the most fun warlock ever and I don't have eldritch blast. Why ? In the setting I'm playing in, casters are either burned alive or snitched to the Red Wizard, who will pay for them and take them away as slaves for them never to be seen again. Generaly, if you are seen casting a spell in public or you are discovered to be a "witch", it's only a matter of time before you will need to make a new character. Also, we play with the rules of gritty realism, so a short rest is a day and a long rest is a week long. I'm playing a water genasi bard/warlock. I'm of the college of Eloquence and my patron is the Kraken (Fathomless). This is a game in which the invocation aspect of the moon (no need to sleep) is super useful, and a cantrip like eldricth blast would just be useless.

I think you underestimate the value of the less combat-focused invocations. One with Shadows is non-concentration invisibility if you just hide behind a pillar or round a dark corner, and Shroud of Shadows is a concentration version that lets you move and do non-combat things. Essentially, you are now the party's Arcane Trickster, but with Misty Visions as an upgraded "Minor Illusion", and at-will invisibility. Add in being a charisma build and Mask of Many Faces or Master of Myriad Forms, and maybe the Actor feat, and you're the best infiltrator in the game.

@@ConstructedChaos To begin with, the Xanathar's Exhaustion Mechanic is an optional rule. Even if said optional rule was being used, how would that make sense? If you don't need to sleep then how are you getting exhaustion from not sleeping? You can still short rest for literally however long you want. Like, you can live your life only sleeping 5-6 hours at a time. Why can't someone who doesn't need to sleep just rest for 5-6 hours instead of 8? Secondly, there are no other downsides to not taking a long rest, other than not getting certain resources back. So no, RAW there isn't a single character that needs to take a long rest. Using an optional rule then most do need to take a long rest, creatures that don't need sleep should be exempt.
