Both the WA-47 and the WA-47Jr are based on a re-creation of the legendary k47 mic capsule found in vintage U 47 microphones - but that's where the similarities end.
The WA-47 is based around a 5751 vacuum tube and an AMI transformer - it also features 9 different polar patterns and an external power supply. The WA-47Jr is a solid-state mic with FET electronics and no transformer. Both are studio workhorses that will serve you well in any session.

Just bought a WA-47 jr after trying out dozens of other mics and I couldn't be happier. Very flattering on vocals. I have a voice that can come across as overly sharp or harsh and when I try to EQ to correct it gets muddy. This mic leaves my voice sounding like it does live. No overly sharp of harsh tones to start with so I can focus on other things. Anyways love the mic, planning on buying it's big brother someday.

Same here. My vocal technique isn’t spot on so can get some harsh sounds, but I tested this mic yesterday in the store with headphones and found myself singing and forgetting everyone around me. It’s literally the smoothest mic I’ve ever heard with no added compressor or EQ. I would say to have a secondary mic with a brighter sound for doubles or harmonies. That could hide the harshness on main vocal line but lift up certain spots.

I've worked with an actual U-47 within a professional environment. Even with KZfaq's notorious compression I could immediately hear some of that detailed "fab 4" magic on that acoustic guitar demo in my monitors. What I wasn't prepared for?! Is just how damn good that WA-47 Jr sounds for it's price point! Holy Smokes! For that price?! I'm seriously tempted to get myself 2 or even 4 of those mics for covering all my home pocket studio recording needs. I'm normally not quite that easily impressed. Especially with sub $500 mics, but man. I think they really nailed some of that vintage mojo, and at a price point that can be appreciated by any aspiring home recording enthusiast. Novice or pro. Well done.

This really helps! I have a new mic invention and needed to see the differences between these two mics. Seems that with my invention, I can transform a "less expensive mic" to sound like these wonderful mics. I can change the freq response naturally and other values, even with no preamp. I can only imagine if I added the technology to these mics, would be most excellent! Thanks for the comparison, appreciate it!

I never understand why large retail centers like Sweetwater don't do a proper mic shootout with a dual mic setup and the same take. Also allowing a perspective buyer to download the audio of both mics for a real truthful hands-on comparison. Even straight into Protools without any post processing, were the input levels the same? Did the demo musicians preform with the exact same intensity and volume on both mics? We'll never know unless both mics were used from the exact same performance.

I have never been a huge fan of the Tele reissue. It's far more open than the vintage U47s I've used. You can actually hear them next to each other now on Audio Test Kitchen. For me the FleA 47 and Heiserman 47 are closer and better for your budget than the Tele. I recently had the WA47 in my studio for about 6 months, and I have to say I think it's the best sub $1000 tube mic I've ever had in my studio save maybe my Advanced Audio CM49. Certainly the best 47 style mic at that price. I preferred it to the Peluso 2247LE I used to own. It's certainly not as refined a sound as the FleA 47 I have access to, but it's nice. I'll have my review out on that shortly.

A K47 capsule (or M7) really doesn't produce peaks in the range where sibilance happens, such as you'd have with a K67 or K87 capsule with no negative feedback. You're not going to have problems with sibilance.

I bought both of them... My WA47 got broken and now is at repair so I bought a WA47jr. The Jr. isn't bad for around 300$'s. It has some more crispy highs and sibilance isn't that nice but nothing which you can't fix in post production. I am in love with the WA47. It is much warmer (ok there is a tube inside). If you have the money I'd recommend you the 47 or the 251.

the jr sounds darker to me as in less high freqs, kind of more like the U47 which is darker handles lower freqs and highs are kept in control. I dont know....a real U47 tube in there would have been interesting. Jr is the same capsule as the WA87 so the tube and transformer must be doing the sound differences. All high quality components I ve read? good video! thanks

Can you comment on how these mic’s would be for a podcaster/voice actor? I am currently working with a sm7b which is fantastic but just looking at alternatives. Thanks.
@sweetwater
@sweetwater 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Andrew. Great question. The WA-47 Jr is one of my first suggestions for voice actors looking for an affordable and fantastic condenser microphone. It has a very low noise floor, which is important for voice recording, and a rich neutral sound to it. So it isn't over-hyped in the sibilance range. The full WA-47 with a tube is an excellent mic, but the tube stage adds a pretty hefty amount of noise, which makes it less than ideal for voice-alone work. You should expect a slightly more open sound stage from the WA-47 Jr compared to the SM7B, and it will be more sensitive to background noises, so watch that AC and the family pet! If you have any other questions, just give me a ring! Drake Sobehrad, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 3271, drake_sobehrad@sweetwater.com

But I guess you have to say that since the price difference is so big. Sure, they sound different. But take the same electronics and put in a different capsule, and the difference will be greater.

people get all caught up in the "name" of a microphone. Went in Nightwing Studios with Ron Capone - look him up, Grammy and Oscar winning engineer and producer. Sadly he's no longer with us. at any rate, he set up 57's on my Ludwig kit all around, and two overhead condenser mics that looked like they had been in a war zone. I asked "where are the Neumanns, the Telefunkens? how the hell are you going to get the awesome, grooving sounds of my Super Classics?? what is up with this?" After taking me to the mic locker and showing me all the gorgeous German legendary mics dully gleaming in the recessed lighting, he gave me this sage piece of advice: "Shut the hell up and play!" Straight into the board, my drums - with ME actually playing them, sounded like a gift from the Gods! Never before, never since has any of my kits sounded like that. Moral of the story: it ain't the name on the mic, it's learning how to listen, develop your ears. Unless you've got a Neve board, you won't notice the difference between this mic and a Neumann in the mix. If you can, and I can hear the difference in the master. call me, I wanna book time with YOU! M
