Forgot to mention in last post - have been watching this build and previous builds with great interest, thank you Adam, Richie, Mick for taking the time to put these videos together. with regards to the fully filled cavity - I know from building my single skin extension at home, the brickworks gets quite wet on the inside after prolonged driving rain and as the insulation quilt is in contact with the outer leaf this will also get wet - is there a danger moisture could track across to the inner leaf? On my single skin WC extension I left a 50mm air gap then studwork sheathed in dpm, inside the studwork I put 75mm Celotex, then 12mm osb covered in upvc decorative boards - this was all as advised by the Building Inspector - I am confident that no matter how wet the inner face of the brickwork gets, the strudwork will stay dry, just to add - at the bottom of the brickwork I used 18inch dpc lapped up the studwork with the studwork dpm dressed down over the outside edge of this dpc so if any moisture runs down the brickwork, or any condensation forms on the dpm it will drain out via the weeps. A good coat of Thomsons Water seal on the external face of the brickwork will also help keep the wall dry.

Not something I’ve ever used I’ll have to have a look at it but I think I’d be uncertain as to the bonding of the rubber straight onto it. I presume you put your thermal fixings into it to hold it down the same way as the Ply?

Looking good Out of interest how did you resolve the cold bridging above the cavity wall insulation to the deck? I may have missed a video update, but wondered if you had to lift the deck again to insulate or not. Looking good, Just buttoning up a mammoth roof build ourselves, waiting for scaffolders to arrive to dismantle today. 🤞🤞

The cold OSB on top of insulation will be vulnerable to rot out from condensation. Best hope VCL is a vapour barrier rather than a vapour control layer.

I had a builder round for a quote for flat roof extension, I’m a keen DIYer and have an all flat roofed art deco house so made it my business to learn how warm roof are built and this builder who has a very good reputation tried telling me you dont need a VCL on a warm roof, when u know you should do but not in a position to argue my point not having any experience in it so i told him what i thought but let it go, i actually really like the firm and seem a shame to not use based on this one point but it makes me worry about what else he doesn’t know, i mean his so knowledgeable i was shocked he doesn’t think its needed.

You 100% need a vcl for a warm roof. If I'm honest, the only material I would use is alutrix 600 as a vcl.

I definitely recommend tongue and groove OSB3 sheets for rubber roofing becase regular sheets will often be slightly different thicknesses and this results on a very noticeable bumpy line on the join. Also make sure you sand all the screw holes and bumps properly or they will show. I used 1mm skyguard rubber which is a bit thinner though and primarily for sheds and it’s harder to use

What about the cold bridge at the top of the wall where it meets the roof? Did you put insulation in the cavity to meet the roof? Because if not, when you put the insulation on the roof you’ll have a big non insulated gap between the raters, from the roof to the insulation in the cavity.

Hi Rich, at 9.18 on the video the 18mm strips Mick was cutting was the idea of them to screw them down through the 12mm OSB, and push that up hard against the insulation. I thought you had to allow for a lath along the front edge of the roof for the water to run into the gutter?

This is really interesting and I have a question/ observation. Before sealing the rubber roof, do you not fill in the screw holes, the big plastic tubes that holds down the insulation and any gaps in the wood? This would lead to a fully flat roof. Cheers
@mrabuilders6723
@mrabuilders6723 5 ай бұрын
Hi Peter. The plastic tubes are thermal break fixings designed specifically for this type of install so no need to fill them in. I could agree with you that they do produce a bump in the rubber but these are the fixings we have to use to do it properly. I’m not concerned about the thermal break fixings or anything else having an impact on the fall of the roof because I have designed in enough fall for no water to be able to sit on this roof. Thanks very much for commenting and watching our video. Enjoy the rest of your weekend 👍🏻

Sorry guys, you promised to clarify the side cold bridge / uninsulated top of wall situation and you haven't. The rest of the roof build up I can't fault but the missing insulation is a massive no - no and i'd be asking for that roof to be taken up and for the two insulation elements to be linked. And before anyone mentions 'spray foam' as a solution - no it wouldn't be acceptable as a fully filled void cannot be guaranteed! Sorry if it sounds harsh but 45 years of monitoring building & construction does that! ☹

It looks like Alutrix like I fitted to the timber. The roof is mean to be coated with a black glue before putting the sheet down but it’s a nightmare putting it on. Of course when you watch them do it on YT they make it look easy in a workshop demo. The Alutrix is self sealing when you put the mushrooms on as you said.
