Karen was a natural. She didn’t need singing lessons. She didn’t win on American Idol. She was the opposite of how Brittney Spears got her start. Karen was born to sing and make people happy. But she was only human and a terrible illness took her away from us too early. But now she’s in Heaven singing to the all the spirits, Angels and to God. She will forever be the greatest voice for eternity!

In 1970, I was 6 years old. This was my mother's favorite song and she used to sing it to me whenever it came on the radio. She told me that this song reminded her of me. Her words made me feel special, loved and invincible! A mother's words can give a child the power to be anything! That is what my mother gave me. In a few short months, I will be 60 years old and far removed from the days when this song was on the radio. When I was 6, I would often wonder what my life would be like at age 30, and what kind of adult I might be. And, here I am today, well past 30 and barely able to look into a rear view that is nothing more than a mixed bag of tragedy and joy. But, it also makes me think about where we are today and I wonder if any of us have truly moved forward. And then, I think how I would trade my best day today for my worst day back then. How, with all of our technical advancements and modern gadgets, I still prefer the simplicity of the '70s. A time when my mother's smile felt like a warm and safe blanket. It's funny how much one song can affect a person. I don't think children today have it like we did. That's what I think, but I sincerely hope that I am wrong.

She reminds me so much of my childhood. Mom and dad had and played their album all the time when we moved to California. It was a different world that is gone forever. However, her beautiful, pure voice brings back to that time period and sends chills down my spine with her voice! I miss her and always will remember her forever!

I listened to this song on the family car radio in 1970. But by 1983, everything changed. 35 years have passed and I continue to listen to this song with the same admiration. I believe that Karen is a talented woman with an unfortunate destiny. "Achieving perfection is the most important thing". Karen Carpenter.

Oh, gracious - 50 plus years ago when I first heard Close To You - I immediately became a fan of the Carpenters - how may of you girls 50 plus years ago tried to sing and sound like Karen Carpenter? I know I tried! Once in a while I haul out all my Carpenter's albums and play them almost non-stop! Karen's voice was like liquid silk, and hearing her sing still brings back some great memories . . . . . ❤
