**Warning to RVers who plans to visit Yosemite** www.uniondemocr... (GPS took me to wrong road even it was set for RV) *Sorry about the music.. It was the only radio station I could get at the time and both of my hand was on wheel tight...:). Please watch this video if you are going to Yosemite National Park with RV or trailer. Need to watch towards the end of video when California Hwy Patrol officer talks. It could have been much safer if police waits at near beginning or middle instead of end of the dangerous road before the bad accident happens. I strongly suggest CHP/police to observe moving violation near beginning of this road and not at the end, can prevent many possible accident bound to happen. It could have been avoided if California state placed or invested in much more noticeable regulator sign(like Hwy sign w/ lighting) at the beginning of Old Priest Road to prevent future accident or death. This is very serious because Yosemite is most popular destination in the states with heavy traffic. ***Update: Paid $280 for the violation** Do not trust GPS

It's been 25 years since I've been on that road so I checked on Google and that sign is so obvious you'd have to drive with your eyes shut to miss it. More like, "I'm a very experienced RV driver so I know what I'm doing". Check your ego and obey the signs. You deserved that ticket.

Just ragging on you. lol isn't it wonderful knowing that the California Highway patrol are so nice to be helpful to someone who accidentally made a mistake. She admits on the audio that she sits there waiting for folks like you to make a mistake. Sure wish I was as good as they are and would never make a mistake in my life. People like her are the number one reason people like me despise cops. You would have learned just as much with a verbal, or written warning. But then again, they need out of towners money. Happy Camping!

No GPS, no matter where it 'tells' you to go, has precedence over posted road signs, HUGE warning signs (as on this grade), road conditions, posted speed limits, road hazards, and most importantly, sound judgment. You were very lucky, there are NO runaway truck ramps on that grade. Your video should be titled: Pay Attention While Driving.

For what it's worth, my wife and I came that way a couple years ago with our 6,000 lb travel trailer. When I looked at Google Maps, Old Priest Road was less windy (fewer curves) than the newer road so I thought it would be easier. I learned a lesson that day and later figured out that less windy means steeper grades. We managed pulling our 24 foot travel trailer up that grade grateful of the 25 MPH speed limit since that was as fast as we could go. Obviously we came down on the correct route. Truth is, we didn't see the sign either.

#1- ignorance of the law is no excuse. #2- You’re a professional driver (I would consider a driver who drives 50,000 miles a year a pro) so you should see the signs. I drive that quite a bit and they are pretty visible. So good luck with contesting that citation.

There are 2 routes. You probably know already. The old 'Priest Grade' is shorter so a GPS device will naturally choose it over 'New Priest Grade' which is longer but safer ( More gentle grade ). That's the downside to those GPS devices. They don't always choose the most practice route.

People who rely on GPS. :::shakes head::: I'm no Luddite; IT was my life for 30 years; but when it comes to travel, I use GPS but also rely STRONGLY on old fashioned maps, both paper and online. That's what Google maps is good for. I'll pull up an unfamiliar route and - hopefully - be able to put the little Google guy on it to traverse it for conditions like lane width, curves, and signs like that. If not, I can still get a good overhead view. I have a brother-in-law who refuses anything but than GPS. Some models are good for monitoring traffic conditions, but they'll also direct you down stupid roads like that, or a route that takes you through Atlanta to get to Florida. I TRIED to direct him on a better route; still 4 lanes, still 65 MPH, but less of a crazy drive; but NO. He goes by GPS and nothing else. Whatever. BIL constantly harps about traveling because driving is such a pain. I've been to 10 times the places he has, via motorcycle, car and RV and rarely get stressed out. But then, I've actually traveled most of the roads virtually before I put wheels on them.

We live just on the other side of the mountain so I take this road a few times a year. This is actually the most dangerous road you could have taken leaving Yosemite, thru Groveland. Priest Grade is the original way to get into Yosemite but many years ago the built hwy 120. I have to tell you, there are signs at both entrances as well as with in a half mile or so, leading up to. You were already on the main hwy120 when you had to break and take a sharp left crossing traffic, just to get on Priest Grade, right? Funny thing is I can see the main hwy on your right side for a good part of the run down. Honestly, I don't know how the hwy patrol could make it more clear. Your lucky it was even open, it's often shut down for road conditions. I believe they have no other choice but to hand out tickets, in this case. Also, I drive a SUV and I've turned around a few times in the turnabout...it's a lil scary, but the speed limit is 25mph and most are going less than 20mph... although, I would not have turned around in your case either... I've only turned around going down...lol...

Yup - very clearly marked. I've been on it 100's of times and it's scary in a car. That sketchy left turn across traffic at the top of the grade should have been a clue that it's not for RV's. Once I couldn't stop at the stop sign at the bottom of the hill after coming down because my brakes were so overheated. You were lucky.

Notice how this video starts AFTER the entry point to the old priest grade. If it started 45 seconds earlier everyone would clearly see BOTH signs warning that RVs and vehicles larger than 7500 lbs GVW are prohibited on the old priest grade. Claiming that you missed both of them is just lame. Either you are driving distracted, or you in fact can't see the road signs. This means that you should not be driving a large heavy vehicle in the mountains. Having said all this, it is still possible for a skillfull driver to go down the old priest grade in a large vehicle that is in good condition. The fact that you were tailgating other cars all the way down and rolled the stop at the bottom indicates that you are not up to this kind of driving. You were fading the brakes. This is exactly why this section of road is restricted to cars only. There is no special license or testing to get behind the wheel of a large RV. Far too many drivers think they are 'good' drivers and can handle it but are mistaken. So, you missed 2 warning signs, entered a road you should not have been on, and could not fully control your vehicle in the way down. The correct title for this video should be: "Do not drive an RV, Winnebago, or 2 axle vehicle with GVW greater than 7500 lbs if you are incompetent to do so".

The sign(s) that tells you not to take old priest grade are much larger than your gps screen. It is very well marked for drivers that are watching the road instead of their phone. CHP is not trying to raise money by ticketing ignorant drivers, they are trying to protect innocent people from ignorant drivers. You have to leave highway 120 to turn onto old priest grade, which is a shortcut around new priest grade. It is very well marked.

Old Priest Grade is just one steep, curvy speed trap. I don't know if you were using a GPS but making sure you had fastest route off you would not have been directed that way. I have a Megellan GPS just when I am pulling so I don't forget to change the settings. A very small single lane wooden bridge with a 9' clearance made me learn the hard way but I did get better at backing up my 38' 5th 1/4 mile on a curvy road. It' wasn't far when I was driving forward but felt like 100 miles going backwards.

People have no idea how many issues are caused on this road because people can't follow the rules. Cars loose there breaks and overheat because they are following RVs up or down. I have driven this road consistently since the day I got my license 10 years ago. The signs are very big and should be seen by drivers who aren't oblivious. The CHPs are doing their jobs. This is a huge issue in our town and we have fought for better signs which we received years ago. We have fought with google maps to make New Priest Grade the main route (which is only 5 miles longer and safe for rvs) but yet they won't help us. People just need to pay attention to road signs and everything will be fine.

Back in 1970 a friend and I were going home to Sacto from Yosemite and we took this road. I had a 1960 Chevy 1/2 ton truck and half way down I blew a front brake line so no brakes at all except for the hand brake. As we gathered speed I told my friend to jump if I could slow it down. As we came around a corner where that CHP was sitting I saw the dirt road that was going uphill there and said hold on and took it. What you can't see up the dirt road was a gate across it, I laid hard on the hand brake and stopped about 20 feet away from it. We knew it wasn't far to the bottom so we let the brakes cool for an hour put it in first and made it to the bottom. There was nothing up there back then plus it was a Sunday so nothing would be open anyway so we came all the way home with no brakes. Good times.

You didn't see the 4' x 8' sign? And no, this is not the main road to Yosemite - staying on 120 is the main road, taking Old Priest Grade is a side road for smaller cars. It is much steeper. We have had numerous problems with RVs on this road - usually because they blindly follow their GPS. CHP nabs RVs on this road all the time because it is unsafe for them to be here. This route only saves you 5 minutes, so don't take it if it's not appropriate for your vehicle.

Exactly right. The turn onto the Old Priest Grade is a left turn off 120, across traffic heading uphill toward the park. There is no road coming in for the right and there is no stop sign on 120 either uphill (toward Yosemite) or downhill (toward Oakdale and Manteca). Therefore, no cross traffic, just steady as you go down hill and away from the park. ps - I hope you enjoyed your stay in the park.

Motorhomes coming up Old Priest Grade are often too wide for the road and create a head-on collision hazard for motorists traveling down hill. Motorhomes coming up often cannot take the grade and stall out in the middle of the lane, blocking the entire road, since there is no way to go around. The signs are clear IF YOU ARE PAYING ATTENTION INSTEAD OF BLINDLY FOLLOWING YOUR GPS! Everyone who gets a ticket on this road TOTALLY deserves it. The turnout in the middle of the grade is big enough for even the largest motorhome to turn around.

If you’re in an RV and coming into Yosemite on CA 120, don’t. Go to Merced and use CA 140. It’s a lot easier for the RVer and the vehicles behind you.

Old Priest Grade road is no joke. It's a sheer drop off on the north side. Across the canyon you can see the New Priest Grade road, and I would never take an RV either up or down the old road. At the top of the grade road it continues on as highway 120. At the bottom is the area called Moccasin. It's still another 40 miles or so before you get to the park, it's on the way to Yosemite but several little towns are located along the upper part of highway 120, Big Oak Flat and Groveland. There are signs. I am familiar with them. But common sense helps, too. It's a very bad road for a large vehicle.

Ideally, for Westbound traffic, CalTrans ought to have signage warnings starting at Bucks Meadow; then East of Groveland; entering Big Oak Flat; leaving BOF; and, the fanciest at Priest Saddle. Eastbound, start at Chinese Camp; the Bridge over the Narrows at Don Pedro; concluding with the fanciest BEFORE Moccasin. For SR 49, start a progression approaching from the South at Bear Valley just outside Mariposa; for starting from the North, start at Jamestown. Strongly suggest a reroute via New Priest, or using SR 140. But, I am wondering about the two Bailey bridges used to bypass Ferguson Slide? I would guess another bad one, is Amphitheatre/Hospital Rock Grade to Giant Forest, Sequoia NP, SR 198 out of Visalia. Then there's problems with Ebbetts Pass, SR 4. For you Eighteeners out there, I like to refer to I 80 Westbound, between Emigrant Gap and the Dutch Flat/Steephollow Exit as Brakestink Canyon, and you KNOW why, 'cause you're riding your brakes extra hard at this stretch, wondering if you just might have to use the Runaway Ramps. The smell gets so bad, that I'm wondering if something's the matter with MY car(Laughs!!)? Perhaps another good name would be Machine Gun Canyon, for the sound of your Jake Brakes.

However, I found that even location and exit signs were small and way to the left and are frequently missed. We also went to Canada and the grade on those roads is even more ridiculous, but they have better and more frequent signs to warn you and direct you. They even change speed limits depending on how fast traffic is going.. The speed changes on a digital sign. There are even warning for motorcycles" Warning, extremely dangerous road, drove with extreme caution.

Well, at least you weren’t driving that on the road to the summit of Pile’s Peak. Saw that back about 1970. Was on the upper switch-backs where it’s nothing but dirt and rock. With the altitude, RV had no more ummph to climb the grade. He had to back it down around the switch backs and let cars going up pass him.

The sign is at the top of the grade and is readily visible. The newer route is not as steep, but is longer so that's why folks like you think you'll 'sneak' down the old grade. The access to the old grade is rather hard to find and the signs are very clear, so I think you knew not to go down that way, but were trying to beat the traffic on the longer (safer) route. Playing the radio while you're conducting business with a CHP officer is, well, not so cool. Being a skilled driver is in your own mind. Following vehicles so close in a 9,000 pound RV going down a 7-8% grade is stupid. This ticket is one you earned, pal.

if you thought that road was bad you need to take highway 1 north from San Francisco then take highway 20 east to 101 it has no restriction that I know of I rode a motor cycle pulling a trailer Loved the ride but miles on miles of holding your breath tight turns no gaurd rails big motor homes who wanted to go faster than they could drive seen four go off the road going south and two on the way back North best view of coast line and as far as warning signs they may of May not be present on your trip to Yosemite most likely just blocked by trees or something I found out that. most warning signs like that here in California are hard to see unless you are close to city's

Stupid thing to do. There are warning signs with weight limits. You put everyone on that road in danger. A RV is too big to make some of the turns causing them to veer into on coming traffic in the other lane. Can't see anything coming at you until it's too late. Most people ignore the signs when they see smaller vehicles taking it. There is now a large painted sign on the road with a arrow pointing straight to stay on 120, along with the same warning sign so you stay on the correct road.

It sounds to me that the small sign is just another reason for the State to collect money from people who honestly didn't see that sign. Because of this video, I'll be foregoing my trip to Yosemite when I do my Route 66 trip. I hope other people will do the same. Maybe, if they lose enough money from people protesting the small sign, they will take action and make the sign larger. A person who didn't know enough to drop down a gear could have lost their brakes on the hill. I have driven Mount Washington Auto Road in New Hampshire more than 26 times so I know how important it is to be informed about how to drive down a steep mountain road. They actually put safety after profit and that is disgusting. No Yosemite for me.

Or, you can enter the park from the another direction. This is not the only way into the park. Take highway 41 through Oakhurst. Turn onto highway 49 to Mariposa etc. Much better and safer. That road in this video is outdated and dangerous. I have been on it and it is scary even in a passenger car. You could see the modern highway off to the right. No need to forego your visit to the park based on this video.

You weren't driving a Class A. Given your overall size and GVW, I don't see a problem as long as everything is in good mechanical order. A large car with sub-par brakes or an over-loaded pickup could just as easily have a problem. Sounds like the classic ticket-trap to me. I've driven that road dozens of times. It's steep but not that steep. There are other roads in the Sierras a lot more dangerous. Check out Whitney Portal Road or Horseshoe Meadows Road for two examples. Hell, a bad driver can get killed in a parking lot!

You have an inflated view of your driving skills. Not receiving a ticket since teens only means you're lucky, You follow too closely. You didn't obey 4 speed limit signs 25 MPH. When Mazda ahead of you stopped suddenly, you exceeded safe speed to catch up with the "traffic". You DID NOT Stop at the stop sign prior to making the left turn. You didn't 't even come to a complete stop after the CHP officer gave you a ticket. No? Look again; a complete stop is a complete stop. period. If your driving skills were really so good as a teenager, and they are what you've shown to us today, you might want to consider that your driving skills are decreasing. I know; you won't / don't believe it. Nor will you do anything about it.I know who you are, You are the driver who thinks he's bullet proof and knows it all, You're the guy that I used to write 20 to 30 tickets a day to when I was a traffic motorcycle officer...major California city, I'm also the guy who responded to your accident scene, gave you CPR although you were the one who didn't stop at the stop sign, I'm the one who held your wife's hand while you struggled to breathe waiting for Paramedics. I am the one that cradled a small child gasping for air because you followed to closely and couldn't['t stop in time.Yes. I know you. And hundreds like you...and your GD attorneys who argue in court that I don't know shit after I've spent all night taking care of traffic problems. Now I'm in court with no sleep . Well, Cowboy, guess what? I do know shit. And I've spent a lifetime trying to keep you from hurting yourself or someone else. Just thank your god that you're still safe however accidentally. Please, slow down. Leave space between vehicles. Stop means stop. 25 means 25 because someone felt that 45 wasn't safe on that road. Let the other guy go ahead if he wants to...what are you gonna save> 5 seconds, Use your brakes; not your horn. If you[ve go time to honk, you've got time to stop. The horn is just punishment. I know. Be nice to the cop who stops you.,..you don't know what horrible event he has just returned from. He/she's a spouse, A parent. A child of someone, Cops, especially traffic cops, are, honestly, only trying too save your ass, Get humble, my friend, I've promised to help y0u in any way that I can, Please let me do that, OK? Cool! You 'n I are good to go then, See ya at the donut shop, :) (thayt's a myth)

After trying the Old Priest Grade several times, I decided never to drive it again in any kind of vehicle. Driving down, as seen in this video, in too hard on brakes. Driving up is much too hard in engine and transmission. It’s far too narrow for any vehicle, especially dangerous for anything larger than a Honda Fit or a Chevy Aveo, etc. DON’T USE IT - EVER!!!

Traffic court is different than criminal court. You can’t submit evidence proving you didnt see a posted sign. If that defense was valid every speeder would get out of a ticket by saying they didnt see the speed limit sign. Sucks but it makes sense. Hope it wasnt too crazy expensive. ...Holy crap! $280??? Now THAT is criminal! They make at least $1M a year from that.

If this is common for RV's to miss their sign(s) then it points to a systemic problem that needs resolution but just planting officers to continually ticket is corruption. They make money from the fines and continue rather that fix the problem and that is knowingly setting a trap for the purpose of revenue and not for public safety. Targeting the visitors who already are spending a great deal to see this national landmark and park is not right.
