In this video we will take a look at rhythm and tempo. Two topics that are easily confused and not often addressed enough.
Rhythm is a key fundamental which creates a foundation for players to build off of in order to be efficient. I like to explain rhythm, simply put, as one continuous process or, in this case, a motion. This motion could be youe backhand, serve, forehand, or overhead. This concept can also be used on the serve as well.
Tempo is slightly different than rhythm. Tempo refers to the variations in speed throughout the process of maintaining rhythm. Understanding how to use rhythm and it's variances is the silver lining to effectively executing consistency as you speed up.

For me this has been, by far, the most helpful tennis instruction video that I have ever watched, and I have watched hundreds of them. It helped me gain more pace, but even more so, it helped with accuracy. Once you realize the difference between rhythm and tempo, and how rhythm is constant but tempo can be varied, it is a game changer!

I feel tempo of the swing is the most overlooked aspect of the game possibly, and a major contributor to why players can’t improve or develop the consistency they are looking for.

A very important video. Too many players want to crush the ball and do not even understand this. Breathing is also something to emphasize here as I reckon this also plays a major role in the discussion here. Thanks for this because I often try to get hitting partners to work into it and build a rhythm but they often try to turn into ROGER FEDERER😂

10 years ago I took lessons for awhile and the guy immediately told me to slow my swing down. At the time I thought he was crazy. Now I realize what he was talking about and now you have reinforced this process with this video. I get a more consistent ball with greater depth when I use good rhythm and tempo. I also find I conserve my energy better and process points better mentally. Pace is over rated.

I think what you are trying to say here is great. language here is important for clarity. When you talk about “rhythm” I think about “timing” of the stroke. I think they both work well in your message. However, “tempo” might be confusing. To me, tempo is the frequency of hits between the players, but you talk about speed of the stroke. I think you’ve already addressed this in the previous point. I would say that, as timing improves, the tempo will naturally increase. That is, the tempo of the rally. Like you said, that’s why the pros make it look so easy. Nice commentary, great video of Nalbandian and Gasquet!

Joel, thanks for taking the time to comment and for your feedback. I agree, tempo is also used to account for the frequency in which the ball is being struck back and forth. However, in this particular case I was trying to specifically highlight the differentiation of tempo of the actual stroke. Happy New Year!

@@wnytennis8269 good stuff. How are you differentiating between the rhythm and the tempo “of the swing” here? Do you think they are synonymous in this case?
@wnytennis8269
@wnytennis8269 3 жыл бұрын
@@joelhammrac good question.. to me, I don’t believe they are synonymous. I like to highlight the beginning or pre contact phase of the mechanics as well as what happens through impact. There is a different “tempo” or speed variation from the start of the stroke to impact. Fundamentally, the stroke begins slow and the accelerations happens moment before and through impact. Many students often begin their coiling or phase too quickly, usually because they are late, or because they struggle with disassociation coordination. When preparing or accelerating to quickly or early this can effect “rhythm”, timing and ones ability to effectively control the angle or path of racket. Hence the reason I like to differentiate between the two. Rhythm, to me is ones overall ability to be fluid and continuous throughout the entirety stroke. Tempo to me is specifically when and at which points the player speeds up or slows down throughout the stroke.
@joelhammrac
@joelhammrac 3 жыл бұрын
@@wnytennis8269 that makes sense so long as the students understand 🙂. I usually have similar conversations about interpreting “backspin “ and “underspin”. Everyone sees things differently, so I am glad you talk about what it means “to you”. That’s language for you!

I wish he discussed way the Brian works when following a ball to contact....players must a turn quickly to make an initial decision then drop the head of the racket slow while adjusting their position ( quick drops are will stagnate the swing and slow down a players ability to move into an optimal position to generate the effortless power players of all levels are looking for

John, are you referring to the brain or tracking of the ball?
@johnbauernfeind8116
@johnbauernfeind8116 3 жыл бұрын
I'm mostly discussing the principals of making good decisions and what it takes to execute a shot ...the player must turn quickly to back hand or forehand( quick upper body adjustment feet turn in place, next adjust to the best position(hands/ swing path slowes down while the player is moving quickly into an optimal position) and then execute the shot(feet slow to a stop to allow the body to uncoil and create controled racket head speed acceleration....so in summary the brain works best if it thinks in the order of what, were, how ...

I think you should add that u let the kinetic chain do the work. Thats why theyre producing so much acceleration right before the impact. Most people think its because they put more energy into the swing rightat that time. But its wrong and it usually leads to the strokes beeing stiff and unnatural. And i would point out that youre producing racquet speed right before the impact and bot after, you just let your motion carry out the swing. You shouldn't force it.

@@monstrosy0033 Do you not think they are using forearm to add more racket head speed? Right before contact? As an extra segment? Or does doing this causes the stroke to be "jerky" and stiff/unnatural?
@monstrosy0033
@monstrosy0033 3 жыл бұрын
@@poida007 i would think it causes the stroke to be stiff. The swinging motion should be as relaxed as posible. Usually most of the force is produced by the legs. Not the hand.
@poida007
@poida007 3 жыл бұрын
@@monstrosy0033 agree, it’s a multi segment forehand if the player can set up efficiently, legs are important, but so are other segments. If that were the case (legs producing most force) wheel chair athletes would not be able to hit a tennis ball let alone play at a high level. I’ve seen them crush ground strokes.

How do they speed up before contact without being "jerky", what creates that speed, which body segments are engaged?
@wnytennis8269
@wnytennis8269 3 жыл бұрын
Podia, great question. First, it all starts with staying relaxed and smooth. If there’s tension this will lead to being “jerky”. The segments of energy typically start from the top of the body down through the bottom of the body then back through the top. The pre stretching of the upper body as they coil the shoulders and torso. Think of pulling back a rubber band. Then, during set up the hips and legs will begin to load and store energy. As the ball as being struck the legs will fire up through the hips releasing the energy which initiates the speed in which the torso and hands unwind. Check out this video. I think it’ll help answer some of your questions. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7qngamls9SpYas.html Cheers!
