Air defense systems play a critical role in warfare, especially in the intense air conflict of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Both sides have amassed numerous air defense systems. Ukraine, for instance, boasts highly prized Patriot systems from the United States capable of intercepting a wide array of missile types.
On the other hand, Russia's arsenal includes the formidable S-400 Triumf, a long-range surface-to-air missile system with a range of up to 400 kilometers. However, the significance of this system doesn't end there; its successor, the S-500, promises to further enhance Russia's air defense capabilities.
This cutting-edge S-500 missile system first captured public attention in 2015 while still in its design phase. By 2021, Russia announced that the state-owned company Almaz-Antey, the developer of the S-500 systems, had secured a contract for 10 such systems, with deliveries expected to start in the first half of 2022. However, delays and setbacks prevented the debut of this air defense system.
Recent developments suggest a change is imminent. On April 23, General Sergei Shoigu, the Russian Defense Minister, revealed that the latest S-500 anti-missile systems would be delivered to Russia's military forces starting from 2024. What's intriguing is that these systems will come in two distinct formats: ballistic missile defense systems and extended-range anti-aircraft missile systems. This development raises questions: what capabilities does this missile possess, and should Ukraine and its allies be concerned?

Russia's S-500 air defense system isn't cheap by any standard, with an estimated cost of up to $2.5 billion in 2023. The S-500 is designed for intercepting and destroying intercontinental ballistic missiles, as well as hypersonic cruise missiles and aircraft, and it is considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the world. The system has a planned range of 600 km (370 mi) for anti-ballistic missile (ABM) and 500 km (310 mi) for air defense, and it can detect and simultaneously engage up to 10 ballistic hypersonic targets flying at up to a maximum of 7 km/s (4.3 mi/s). However, disregarding the cost, any effective missile defence system that is purposed to effectively neutralize enemy ICBMs with nuclear payloads cannot be regarded as unjustifiable spending.

The problem with all these interceptor systems is there is only a 1:1 exchange of missile vs threat. Why isn't Russia doing some old-school special intrusion ops to go deep into enemy territory and take out NATO launchers? A squad could take out a PATRIOT battery and remove the threat directly.

Sputnik 1 first satellite in space 1957. U-2 spy plane shot down from air defences, no one was supposed to have the technology for guided missiles, that was 1960. First man in space, Yuri Gagarin, 1961. First woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, 1963. Russia had network computers for the military only back in 1959? Or early sixties, can not quite remember the date. The fact is, the West's ego was too big to accept Russia as an advanced nation in technology. Putin has pulled his people out the gutter after the Soviet Union dissolved, the country was in ruins and resources being pillaged. He fixed all that, and the Western elites hate him for it.

Has anyone here seen the SPRINT MISSILE (from the 1960s) ACCELERATE..? It accelerated at 100 G, accelerating to Mach 10 (12,000 kmh // 7,600 mph) in 5 sec. Reaching such speeds at low altitudes caused skin temps up to 6,200 °F // 3,400 °C. Requiring an ablative shield to dissipate the heat.

Oh noooo .... the TREEE OOMF. 🙂 It appears to accelerate like the old sprint missile did. CRAZY fast acceleration. But ... intercept ICBMs..? Bold statement. But what's even crazier? Is to suggest that you'd use the same system which can intercept an ICBM ... to intercept an aircraft or a DRONE. I'm guessing it can integrate with S400, S350, S300, Buk M3/M2, and Tor to use the assets that are best suited to the target. Of course, on the other hand, while it seems stupid to waste a missile on a drone, what you're really spending a missile on, is protecting the asset the drone would've destroyed. Which is why people who compare the price of an interceptor to an ICBM always get the calculus wrong (or at best 'incomplete' ) ... bc the real value is the cost of an interceptor ... vs the price of allowing an ICBM to hit a metropolitan city. Which is as obvious as the cost of a ballistic vest vs the price of a 9mm ... bc it's about the price of a vest vs being shot.

@@richardscathouse It's not about tracking it. They're going Mach 20 (on the low end) to Mach 26 ... For a vehicle that's not traveling at a similar speed, if it's off by 1/4th of a second, means being off by MILES. It's going over 4 miles per second.

Do they have kinetic interception missles for the s500 or only missles with fragmentation warheads, like the s400? The latter is less reliable against missles with a lot of kinetic energy, like ballistics and hypersonic missles in the terminal phase, according to some (pro-Ukraine) analysis

I prefer to look at facts and the latest expo of military equipment didn’t result in significant orders for Russian military products and some countries have cancelled their orders. The S400 requires a lot of batteries to be guaranteed of a save sky. Like crimea has a lot of them. And that makes the apparatus expensive for what it suppose to do.

On paper S-500 seems really good. But it is t proven in battle… yet. I’ve said the same for any weapon system from other nations. US SM-3 anti-ballistic missiles weren’t battle-tested either until it intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile in exoatmospheric range. Same goes with Israeli’s ARROW 2/3 system. It will be interesting to see the system in action, intercepting ATACMS missles as the latter are rumored to destroy S400 system. Also at what rate they can be produced as these are f#-$ exoensive and complex to build. Have also in mind that each rocket is also expensive and what we see in the Palestine-Israel war shows that it can be overwhelmed by cheap drones

Russia is building more than they are using. Very curious to see the Fab 3000 with upgrades. My understanding is they are too powerful for the regions wanting to be annexed to Russia. Hopefully we can see the destructive capabilities towards the western part of Ukraine

I can't cope with the old ATACMS, so are they any good?Beech trees and wasps are regularly destroyed by drones. Pancyr cannot cope with drones. Radar cannot distinguish them from birds.They are trying to fight drones by shooting manually. hmm, trying.
