Repairing the transmission defect that causes these vehicles to leak ATF from the left front axle seal. You DON’T need the dealer for this, and don’t let someone sell you a transmission that you may not need. In most cases this repair can be done for less than $500 total.

Quality work, thank you for providing us this DIY tool. Auto class in highschool cv axle rebuild day we were made to mark the shaft and cup (clean and mark a spot on the bearing also) so the bearings go back in the same slots and match the existing wear pattern. If you've done it already and reading this don't worry the axle is pretty durable.

This has also happened on my 2004 Mazda 3, but it happened around 180k so you know. take it as you may. It was a $300 repair by the way. Oops, no engine or transmission issues. Other than regular maintenance and a valve manifold cover (that I broke). She is sitting at 201k.

You know, as much as I really appreciate all the DIY videos posted on youtube, by all of the awesome mechanics out there, I have to say... Although I LOVE my Mazda Tribute (second Mazda I've owned, bought #2 because of how impressed I was with my B2500 pickup) I have to say, I have become VERY disillusioned by all of the apparent manufacturer defects, that Mazda is fully aware of, but don't offer recalls on for repair/replacement. The cruise control issue was a recall because of safety issues, but damn... ignition switch issues are a BIG problem too, it gets loose by 100k miles or so and eventually will not start the car. And they've redesigned the replacement modules 6 times since 2008. The current one costs over $150 just for the part. My idler pully went at 80k miles, my evap system started leaking at the valve at around 70k miles too, now I'm thinking I may have this problem too. I'm fairly handy with a wrench, etc.. but without a lift, I'm not real happy about having to jack it up and crawl under. With all these issues, I'm definitely thinking of a different model/manufacturer with my next purchase.

Runamuckretreat mccarthy I know it is frustrating at times, but trust me every manufacturer has issues like this that you have to deal with. I really comes down to whose problems are you willing to deal with. My wife has a 2012 Escape Limited, same vehicle, and at 114k miles we have never had an issue. One of the lucky ones I guess.

08 mazda tribute 250k miles.....I know this video is old. Iv had this problem a couple of times. First time i didnt know about the bushing, i just replaced the cv shaft & seal. 6mo later it started pouring trans fluid all over the place. Thats when i came across your video. Again replaced cv shaft & seal, and the bushing this time. Lastnight (1yr later) my wife called from 30miles away saying it was doing it again and was poring out while car was running while sitting in parking lot. So i drove w/ car trailer and picked her, kids & car..... why did this happen again so fast? I followed your video to the t. I love the tribute, it drives and has ran perfect with no problems at all except this. Hopefully you see this right away, i culd use some advice before i start to Tear back into it. Which will have to be today, if not ill let you know what i find. Thank you in advance

My friend has one of these,an 08 Escape AWD. I told him not to buy it. It's got about 130k on it. Since he bought it,about 1.5yrs ago he's replaced the timing chain$ and the water pump. That was over $2k. Now it's in the shop getting a rack & pinion steering replaced and a power steering torque sensor. That's going to cost about $1800. Even after all that,the transmission leaks fluid. They quoted him $1500 to fix that. Replace the pump & front seal. These vehicles are a major peice of crap. I'd never buy one after watching him go through all that. In fact I gave him a ride home from the shop. I felt bad for him,I didn't say anything about that pos car of his. The only good thing about the Escape is the engine. The 3.0L is a great little engine. Too bad the rest of the vehicle sucks and falls apart around it. LOL And he's a grandpa that drives it like a friggin great grandma. And it still breaks down all the time. 🤣

This issue was only with the front left axle, but you could have a cv joint that is showing its age. If you can get it up in the air, have someone hold the break and shift from drive to reverse and see if you can isolate the clunk. Just please be careful that the vehicle is properly lifted and secure so that it doesn’t fall on you or run you over.

Eddy Money I’ve done it both ways, but the repair kit from Ford comes just the trans end as part of the kit and if the rest of the axle is in good shape it’s less expensive to do it this way. If the axle is not in the best shape I would just buy the bushing from Ford, then get the seal and the axle on the aftermarket.

@@JosephVollmar Thanks man, I appreciate it. You may have mentioned this in the vid but what are the primary symptoms of having a leaking axle joint? In terms of actual driving. Thomas Goff it is possible that it could happen, but it was not a common problem in the earlier models. There was no TSB for the pre 2009 vehicles. Bishop Designs these are still good cars. If you are buying private party ask for maintenance records, the more detailed the better. If you can find one that you can prove is mostly highway miles that is even better. Use carfax or a similar VIN check service to look for accidents, locations the vehicle has been registered, and how many owners it has had. You can also sometimes see miles at each license renewal. The fewer owners the better. A vehicle that has changed hands a lot may have problems. I hope this helps, and don’t be afraid to pay a mechanic you trust to look it over before you make a deal. A half hour labor is a lot cheaper than getting stuck with a problem child.

@JosephVollmar
@JosephVollmar 5 жыл бұрын
It will cause a trans fluid leak from the drivers side axle shaft seal at the transaxle. That is really the only major symptom. If you let it go too long it could do more damage, just don’t run your trans low on fluid. A dealer may be more than $500 depending on labor rates in your area, but call around for pricing. Are you anywhere close to St. Louis, Missouri?

Also please next time link where to get that parts for the repair or show the part number for the kit. This will help alot thanks alot. I am having this issue now on my 2012 ford escape 2.5l

I see in your comments the repair cost is "less than $500" Is that DIY or taking it to a shop? How much is the repair DIY vs Mechanics shop??
@JosephVollmar
@JosephVollmar 5 жыл бұрын
That is taking it to a shop. You can buy a repair kit from Ford under the TSB and I think that is around $200, and it includes the updated bushing, new seal, and the stub end of the CV axle. With the ford repair kit you need to disassemble the inboard CV joint to replace the stub end. You can also buy the updated bushing, seal, and a full axle shaft on the aftermarket, but I'm not sure what the cost on that is right off the top of my head. If I remember correctly it is about 2.5 hours of labor to make the repair, but I could be wrong about that. Using those numbers it would cost about $400 at our shop to use the Ford repair kit, but that number may vary depending on the labor rate in your area.

My 2012 Ford Escape with 50,600 miles I don’t really know what the problem is but when I put my car in reverse and try to park in my drive way which is a slight incline it feels like it’s jerking or another way I would describe it would be like wheel hop. I checked my mounts and they look fine but my engine moves a decent amount but idk if it normal because the mounts are pretty big and I assumed there should be some play.
@JosephVollmar
@JosephVollmar 5 жыл бұрын
There should not be much play in the mounts. They are fairly large, but usually the rubber should be just soft enough to absorb the engine vibration without allowing excessive movement. It could also possibly be caused by a failing CV Joint in one of the axle shafts although that is not likely. The best advice I can give you is to take it to a independent repair shop in your area that you trust and ask them to take a look at it. They may charge you a little for their time if you choose to fix it yourself, but what they charge you could save you time and frustration if you cannot pin it down yourself. I wish I could be of more help, but without seeing it I really don't want to lead you down the wrong path and end up costing you more money, and I don't know of any common problems that fit those symptoms.
