According to Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal, CBS drew 9.589 million viewers for the final round on Sunday, marking a 20% decrease from Jon Rahm's victory at Augusta in 2023.Carpenter also highlighted that Scheffler's win resulted in the "second-largest deficit of the season" for the US broadcaster, the lowest since 2021 when Hideki Matsuyama claimed his first major title.
Reportedly, the coverage reached its peak at 12.562 million viewers from 7:00-7:15, coinciding with Scheffler's sealing of the win. The average viewership stood at just over 8.210 million throughout the weekend's events. The most recent data highlights a concerning pattern in men's professional golf, revealing a decline in viewership across PGA Tour events in 2024.
Peter Malnati's thrilling victory at the Valspar Championship in the weeks leading up to the Masters witnessed a 27% decrease in viewership. This decline has been consistently observed in other tournaments as well.WARNING I AM WORRIED...MASTERS CBS Ratings have Suddenly CRASHED! Here's REAL Why...

@@STEEPPOW I get what you're saying but is it quality golf? What sport can lose a large percentage of it's top players and the overall quality not go down? I am not convinced that has not happened. Scottie is winning I think for two reasons. One the guy is playing very well but two the competition is watered down as compared to before LIV. I can't prove that cause I don't have the numbers it is just a feeling and a hunch. No slighting the guy because he deserves to win I am just saying something has changed and I am not convinced it is all him.

I'll tell you why I don't watch golf anymore, I'm 67 and a lifelong SoCal golfer. I'm on a fixed income now and golf has just gotten too expensive to play. I started junior golf in 1965, but I recently quit playing due to cost. My health is fine. Its too expensive to play so I have lost interest in the players. Couldnt care less about the PGA / LIV squabbles. The golf industry can have it all. There are too many less costly hobbies available for my time, and my dime. So, Im in 3 bowling leagues now. I can bowl for 3 hours, for 12 bucks. And I dont have to listen to Rory and Tiger whine. Masters shmasters. The golf industrial machine is its own worst enemy.

It's a very enjoyable past time and requires little talent other than knowing how to relax, pay attention, and just enjoy the moment. For best results have a clip of Verne Lundquist on a loop and in your ear buds all you here is the chirping of birds and YES SIR!!! There are too many commercials in PGA golf coverage, three shots then commercials (not the Masters). There is too much statistical crap you are forced to watch and listen to as well, along with bios of players we don’t care about. Too much meaningless talking, swing analysis, etc for the average viewer who doesn’t tune in for a lesson. I’ll bet CBS miss Frank T as their director. The Masters coverage was the worst I’d ever watched. They put out coverage reflective of the fact they didn’t have to pay anything for it!

I generally agree... anytime golf is on the golf channel I won't watch unless I'm on my computer and am doing something else because 50% of the time is literally dedicated to commercials. However when it's the Masters or some big golf event most of the event will be aired on CBS and their coverage is 100 times better and has significantly less commercials, so I can actually watch golf when it's on CBS.... after taking repeated head kicks a punch to the face doesn't feel so bad. In other words, watching golf on CBS is a pleasant experience for anyone who's tried to watch golf on the golf channel. It didn't seem that bad to me. Everytime CBS had a commercial I'd clean 1 1/2 dishes before I'd have to sprint back into the room because the commercials were only like a 1 minute long.

Inflation through the roof so more people choosing to buy food instead of playing a round of golf. I could go on forever on why golf is declining especially PGA viewership. My 2 cents… look what happened to the ratings when Tiger came onto the tour in 1997. Look at the ratings over recent years when he has been competitive. Tiger was very entertaining. The golfers of today are not entertaining. Period. They are very boring to watch. Another very entertaining golfer was Arnold Palmer. I’m sure ratings were sky high when he was playing. There is ZERO emotion on today’s tour. The golfers ignore the gallery and barely tip their hat when thousands are applauding them. It’s a game. It’s a game that isn’t fun. It’s entertainment until it’s not.

I can say for a fact that the LIV and the broadcasts never denegrate the PGA Tour. However, every PGA program I listen to or watch, in veritably bashes LIV. They need to realize that denegrating LIV and its fans is denegrating PGA Tour fans also. LIV fans weren't created 3 years ago. We still are PGA Tour fans, because we are fans of golf.

ESPN+ also had a featured group to watch too which showed Tiger and Rory and Rahm throughout the day. Did I mention not one commercial for my seven hours of watching on Sunday. A much better viewing experience then the CBS broadcast. The ratings are down because so many of us are tired of hearing about how much money the players will be making and how the PGA tour is morally superior to the LIV players. I have stopped watching the Golf Channel because of their continuous hate of the LIV players. The fans are tired of the drama and just want to watch golf. The ESPN+ broadcasters just stick to golf and mentioned what tour a player was on and left it at that unlike the CBS broadcasts which never mentions a player who plays on the LIV tour or will bad mouth the LIV tour.

No more drama because Scotty knew how to bring it home. CBS is so woke that 1/2 the viewers would rather watch the highlights. Finally, look how many A players did not make the cut. I agree with the slow play part, but i don't understand how player pay is ruining sports... they should be payed a lot of they're and the sport is generating a lot. Money in sports has always been there. If anything these big franchises are giving a greater percentage than they used to which is a good thing. All sports earn and divy pay differently but few sports payout more than 50% to the players. II'm not going to argue what percentage it should be. Owners, everyone has a right to make money. Obviously if a sport doesn't generate a lot of money the players are going to get paid according to that, or perhaps through sponsorship's they'll make their money. I would say any pro golfer who can maintain a top 100 ranking for a year has it made. There really isn't a better sport to be a professional in terms of everything. Obviously those outside of the top 100 can have a bit of a grind, but even the top Korn Ferry players in a given season make fairly good money. Being on the cusp of a pro golfer could be a brutal place to be, but trying to become a pro in any sport, you have to be talented enough to make it and if your pay to travel and play is greater than your earning, odds are unless you improve you're not going to be a pro golfer.

Like it or not, golf is a dying sport. Most people can not afford to play golf regularly, especially with the current inflation. I always said that if golf did not start catering to all budgets that it would not make it. The economy is in big trouble. Yes, it took off during the plandemic but the government dumped a ton of money into the economy ( bad mistake), and no one couldn't do anything else but play golf. Golf is in big trouble. Unless something changes, it won't make it. LIV isn't the answer either.

It's not LIV - nor USGA, nor PGA, it's the format on TV! The announcers, the camera angles, the following of the golf ball, and most of all the PLAYERS! There were so many times in which the TV Camera lost the ball in midair! Or could not find the ball on the green. Or the announcers saying: "That is going to be a hard shot from there!" (WHY? - No explanation). On some announcer explanations, the result was totally opposite from what the ball did in real time! Then we have, as much as in recent years 2020 to now; NO one person in the World seems to connect with the NOW top Leaders on the board; like we did with: Tiger, Rickie, Rory, Bryson, Jason Day, Hideki, Seve, VJ Singh, The Golden Bear, Norman, Faldo, Arnie, Langer, Phil, The Black Knight, Bobby Jones, Casper etc. Also, at times, it felt, and looked like some players held back, or stopped trying to win. It seemed a tad orchestrated. Announcers calling it "mistakes"! Common! At that level? And some players looked like they didn't even want to be there!

There is no way this event should be designated a Major. Endless visuals and claptrap talked about "Tiger's chances" - Freddie Couples and other past champions who take a place which should be occupied by current pros. Last day pins which are predictable as hell requiring the same approach shots every year. It is so Boring.

The other events are 10x worse because the Masters seemed to care about the viewer, but there were more commercials this year. Also…WHY AM I MISSING ANY SHOT BY A PLAYER WITHIN 3-4 SHOTS OF THE LEAD IN A FINAL ROUND OF A F*****G MAJOR I shouldn’t miss a 6 foot birdie putt of a player closing in on the leader on the back 9 because you go to commercial. Then when you come back he’s on the tee after having made the birdie. The US Open last year was almost unwatchable. More commercials than golf and a mic on the blimp active the entire time. Was a total joke. And let’s not even get into the commercials themselves… They’ve destroyed the golf watching experience and apparently now the Masters is joining in on the bs NBC and CBS and ESPN are so bad at this point. Hey let’s show 4 minutes of golf then have a split screen while we get 5 minutes of commercials then come back for 3 minutes of golf before cutting totally away to 5-6 more commercials. Here's a perspective that has nothing to do with the PGA/LIV Tour situation. The stars of golf that won their majors in their twenties haven't performed anywhere close to their status in the game since they turned thirty and started having families. Think of the players that have won multiple majors but now would rather post on social media after missing a cut or being a non-factor in a tournament. With Scheffler being 27 years old and now starting a family we can see if his game falls off like the likes of Mcilroy, Thomas, and Spieth.

This reminds me of the Indycar split in the early 2000s, it divided the fan base and both Indycar & CART suffered for it. I understand why LIV was created, I support the idea of competition. I’ve tried to watch LIV 5 times, and each time lasted no more than 10 minutes. The number one aspect of LIV that drove me away…the NOISE! No matter who was talking or what location…the friggin’ obnoxious music in the background! So…I’ve never learned about the team aspect or why they don’t play 72 holes, I can’t get past the noise. On several occasions, the music has been so load I can’t hear or understand what they’re trying to tell the viewers. As far as the PGA…whenever I tune in I find a field of golfers I’ve never heard of…70% or more. In our household we get invested in the golfers skill & personalities. Recent additions to our favorites: Sahith Theegala, Tom Kim, two guys with skills and personalities. I hope “they” get this worked out, but…for crying out loud…turn down the blasting music…it’s not a nightclub. 😎

Everyone has their own reason for not watching, but more than anything golf at the professional level is associated with rich, spoiled brats that can't make enough money on the tour created BY AND FOR THEM to the point they need to hold their hands out for truckloads of Saudi money. While the Saudi's are buying the sport, the monthly expense to me at the gas pump keeps going up and up. The cost to transport groceries to the store goes up and is passed down to me. While my spending ability is stretched to the limit, I can only dream about purchasing a decent set of new clubs that cost 70-120 percent what they did five years ago and I now have to pay green fees 50 percent more than two years ago. Golf is literally spending it's way out of my desire to be interested--something the whole industry should note carefully.

So I might be a good example as to why people are not watching as much golf as they used to. In my market, the New York Long Island area and I believe most of the US for that matter, the PGA is now showing their product on I believe five different services. NBC, CBS, NBC Golf/Sports (Golf Channel), Peacock network, and ESPN+. PGA live might even be in there somewhere, but I got so disgusted with that, I stopped even looking or caring. I’ve personally became exhausted of trying to find out when they were broadcasting as well as what and where. Also the fact that the PGA has now added additional subscription services that are required to watch a full golf tournament has completely turned me off to the point that I canceled my cable subscription which took CBS, NBC and the Golf Channel/NBC golf with it. I have to believe that other people cutting the cord is having a similar effect. I have on the other hand actually been watching LIV golf when I can because it’s just easy to flip on the app wherever I might be, at home on my TV or on my phone. Hope this helps in your quest to find answers.

Agree with the comments others have made. TV coverage is boring, agenda driven, focused on a few, and too many commercials. Its basically not watchable. For those of us who Love the game we have to remember its a fringe sport and only a very small portion of the golfers will take time out of their day to watch, most rather play the game. There are no compelling story lines and way too many PGA events for the public to take notice or care. The Majors are the only reason to watch these days. The TPC Sawgrass was a chance for golf to get some traction but Harmen and Clark folded like cheap suits at the end and Zander is always the brides maid. I knew Scottie had it won at the turn on Sunday at the TPC Sawgrass and Masters.

So, the bottom line is I don't watch LIV golf. However, the PGA Tour events are mostly between guys I have never heard of previously. The big-time golfers I like to watch play are on the LIV tour. So, I watch very little of the PGA Tour. So there you have it. I will watch the majors because all of the best players will show up. The events are played at the best and most challenging golf courses. That makes it interesting. After The Open championship is played in July, that will pretty much end my viewing for the year.

I have heard several people who are puzzled by the lower golf ratings and public interest. Honestly.... I roll my eyes why people are surprised. There are many reasons but there are some KEY ones: The dominate players have a fraction of the personality and public appeal that Tiger, Phil, Ernie, Fred and other do. Rory is the only one who has a personality worth paying attention. Scheffler, Schauffele, and Cantlay have as much personality as a blank canvas. There are some players who DO have the personality to get viewer's attention back but those players are just playing poorly the past number of months: Justin, Jordan, Ricky and Jason Day. Throw an in-form Rory in that mix and you have a tour that would be fun to watch. People would almost forget about who's even ON the Saudi sports-washing tour. That being said... how Jay Monahan still has a job is a HUGE part of the problem. In the US the PGA tour are ALWAYS touting US patriotism. US flags and apparel everywhere. It's historically been a HUGE part of the PGA tour's branding. For Jay or anyone else to think they could join forces with the Saudi royal family's sports-washing scheme and NOT have critical backlash shows a complete void of reality and SCREAMS of hypocrisy. The possible merger with LIV has to be scraped... Monahan has to go... and then they have a MASSIVE brand/trust-rebuilding task on their hands. For people not to see these factors... it simply shows lacking grasp on reality. Sorry/not sorry about the bluntness. For context, I've been an avid watcher/supporter of the PGA tour for over 40 years and over the past 2 years I have been reduced to watching the final few holes of major's final round (except The Open, which I will watch all the way through) and I watch NONE of the non-major events. I used to watch everything.

I think the effect is quite subtle. For the first time since Sky have shown weekly US golf tournaments, I have more or less stopped watching them this year because the fields were noticeably weaker. Especially TPC, which could hardly be described as the fifth major anymore; it resembled a normal weekend tournament before LIV. You then get out of the habit of watching so I watched only a few hours of the Masters, which I never thought I'd ever do. The LIV representation at majors won't last as they get no ranking points. Furthermore, PGA Tour sponsorship deals will tank and Sky TV ads will be even more prevalent as they try to make up the financial loss for falling viewers and subscribers. A fair deal with LIV, and a better deal for the DP World Tour, would help. The PGA Tour has played hardball and financially lost, so I suspect it will now behave more reasonably, but it could already be too late. The Ryder Cup will be next to suffer a dramatic fall in European viewers if half our best players aren't eligible.

Many of my favorite golfers are playing LIV tournaments now. Maybe LIV has to set up their own “World Ranking Points” system and present the results to the 4 majors or come up with 4 new majors. Team golf is garbage, paying players upfront is garbage, and acting like you’re a good golfer because you’re on LIV is garbage

Tiger finished dead last of all the golfers who made the cut, but they covered him more than some of the top 20 players. He used to push the needle, but at some point, it’s time to move on. He’s not a late Sunday factor anymore.

They prove they don’t deserve our viewership. They sell out of country for a dollar! I’ll never watch them again

To be honest, the coverage is just boring, lots of commercials, commentators are iconic in their own rite but no ones excited, lots of dead air. At least LIV keeps things dynamic and exciting showing shot after shot, having all these side pieces, lots of informative information on screen, a bit of relatable humor and no commercials.

That’s because they don’t have any sponsors. You may see it as a good thing, but they sure don’t

@@spencer2365 Well to be fair they dont need the money either and Legion 13 has sponsors thats why they wore their gear at the masters. I rather enjoy the free agency they have.

What happened to limited commercial interruptions from the past years? seemed like a commercial or one of those split screens every 4 or 5 minutes..that playing thru crap. That made it almost unwatchable.

Shocked by the ratings, everyone I knew was watching. There were also multiple Masters parties going on in my neighborhood all weekend. I think if anything they need to show more players and more shots. Down the stretch seeing only 4 or 5 guys play isn't that entertaining. What also might have hurt was the weather in the Midwest on Sunday, mid 70s and sunny is not typical in mid April. Lots of people and families probably out enjoying the weather
