About time I did another weaving video.
And this time I am changing the style of my weaving from my usual things like towels, to a small rug. So many people think of rugs first when they think of home weaving, but they are thinking of "rag rugs" where the "rags", that are used as weft, are a big part of the rug. I am starting here a "Warp Rep" rug, so you will see as you watch what I mean by Warp Rep, and why the "rag weft" is not important in this type of weave. In fact, there is no "rag weft". There is a weft, but it is not "rag".
So relax, sit back and watch as I start this project, it will take me another video to finish this, but you will get a good start on what I am doing in this video.

New to weaving and find your videos very informative and enjoyable. I have finished four sets of hand towels since watching your videos. I say hand towels instead of dish towels since my weft threads are heavier than experienced weavers would use. I want to learn on less expensive fibers and threads before switching to more expensive , more appropriate weight threads. I have progressed to tying on to a previous warp which also saves time, thread and confirmation threading is correct. My favorite pattern thus far has been Birdseye Twill.

Thanks so much for sharing. I felt like it was Christmas again when I saw you had a new weaving video. You make it seem so easy. I think I will give it a try after next project. I'm looking forward to your next video.

Great job. I have a suggestion. Instead of using the flat stick , use a dowel rod. I did my Masters in weaving in rep. That rod works the best. I know what you mean about wrapping your head around the color block. Thanks so much.

Good job I like the inkled effect of a warp faced cloth & the orderly geometric patterns. You must be working so hard as I would imagine this is super hard with a multiple treadle loom. I got a Dobbie which means I'm only threading a single treadle at any one time providing my pegs don't fall off the lag chains. Cool :)

Hi Andy. I very much enjoyed this video! I have woven the exact overshot gamp in the background of your video! I had a lovely time weaving it, and it was the most challenging project I have competed so far as a young weaver. I appreciate your videos.

I've never done rep and need to challenge myself for our guild study group topic. Amazon's taking its time shipping my copy of Rep, Rips, Rep Weaving so I watched your video to 'get in the mood'. I really appreciate your recommendation for weft--the all-purpose Bernat cotton available at JoAnn's should work about the same as what you recommended. Thanks for the tips.

Hi Andy, As I look at the thick and thin weft, my mind concived a design idea for a rug. I have SO much Peaches and Cream cotton yarn from a yarn store job I had at one time that this is the perfect use for it. What else did you learn at weaving school? There must be so many ideas and techniques you were taught.

Barbara, it wasn't so much of what specifically I learned in the class, as the general atmosphere of being there and taking in all of the little things. While Becky's teaching is wonderful, it's more about sharing ideas with other weavers and watching each person learn different things. The formal class covers a lot of things and they all get mixed up with those things one already knows, and then during the class another student may mention something that makes one's brain bounce to a new bit of knowledge. BTW, I enjoyed the time there very much, but would not want to even think about being an apprentice for six months. At Vavstuga, they used about 15 or 20 strands of think warp thread wound on the shuttle as weft, I didn't want to do that, and didn't have that much extra carpet warp laying around, so was just looking for a thicker cotton to use. I understand that "mop cotton" also works great as the thick weft. I may buy some of that to try on a future project.

Can you tell me where you got your game pattern that you hung on your wall? Absolutely beautiful. Also do you like using teslov heddles versus metal heddles. I have a Kessenich loom and considering switching to teslov heddles.

That gamp came from an old issue of "Hand Woven" magazine, I don't remember which issue any more, but it's about 10 years ago. I much prefer texolv heddles to metal ones. Unless you loom is a jack style that needs the weight of metal.

@curmudgeon66
@curmudgeon66 3 жыл бұрын
@@janineblackburn15 No, because this is WARP REP you do not need 8 shafts (or harnesses) for four blocks, only 4 shafts are needed. if you look at the chart I drew up at about the 11 minute part of the video, you can see that what I call block A and block C use the same treadles and are really the exact same weave except for which is the thick and which is the thin weft. it is the changing of the weft thickness which causes the exact same shaft / harness combinations to appear as if they were 2 separate blocks. I know I have a very hard time wrapping my brain around this concept, which is partly why i made this video. With most other structures (other than warp rep) you would be correct about needing 8 shafts - but with warp rep it is the alternating of wefts that make a block look like 2 blocks. Think of Log Cabin weave done on just a two shaft loom, you can get the effect of 2 blocks by the way you sequence the two colors of wefts, it is a similar concept here. Hope this helps.
