The first step in any weaving process is to warp your loom.
I demonstrate one warping technique on my lap loom / frame loom with a bar heddle, which you can find in my shop in various sizes: ro-natural-dyeworks.myshopify...
UPDATE: Unfortunately, I have closed my online shop for the foreseeable future. Apologies for any disappointment.
In this tutorial, I show you two ways to warp your loom:
02:10 Simple warping method - 1 warp thread per notch, resulting in 3 ends per inch. This will be best suited to very chunky yarn and weaving with children.
06:55 "Double" warping method - 2 warp threads per notch, resulting in 6 ends per inch. This is more common, and will give you a tighter, more stable fabric.

Just got a nice "beginner's loom" for a visually impaired friend and I'm trying to learn it well enough to teach her how to do it. We've both learned to knit that way : ). Excellent teaching video here! and we look forward to viewing more as we learn.

I've been interested in weaving but have been reading about heddles, and beams and goodness knows what else and thinking maybe it was too difficult for me. Then reviews of these types of looms saying they are faulty "because the warp separators cause the warp threads to fall off". Well I have googled ALL DAY trying to find out if these looms are OK then I found your video. It's a heddle, you have to loosen tension enough to get the heddle in but not too loose or the warp threads may pop off. You are my hero. Seriously. A good teacher makes people feel they can understand complex or new ideas without overwhelming them and you have done just that. New subscriber. Thank you so so much 💗

I have purchased a fairly large frame loom with a bar heddle which is presently sitting on my kitchen island, trying desperately to intimidate me, and it was doing a really good job until I found your wonderful instruction video! I found many other instruction videos but they did not apply to the exact frame loom that I have. Thank you so much, I can't wait to watch to the end so that I can begin warping it. You explain everything so well and I am looking forward to watching more of videos as I get more experience. Thank you again, you have definitely helped to get me started.

This is a great little loom and this is the best warping video I’ve seen. I want to use my loom to test drive and learn concepts, preview overshot patterns, etc., before I set up my project on my rigid heddle loom. I did a twill with a pickup stick yesterday.

On this loom there are 2 bars each about 2 inches from the top and bottom of the loom. Are they meant just for stability and keeping the loom square - or are they meant to indicate the weaving area (in between the 2 bars). It’s difficult to weave over the bars - and I would usually start my tapestry about an inch above the bottom. So a bit confused about their purpose.

I saw a video where they double warped by going up the first notch into the upper first, down the upper second into the lower first, up the lower second into the upper second, down the upper third into the lower second, up the lower third... and so on. Basically stringing into whatever was stringed last. Would this work as well, or would that slant the work? I come from a knitting and crocheting background, so I know nothing of weaving.

Hi, Great question! The method you describe is a method I have seen used often and it works well, it's not how I was originally taught but it has some advantages. If you have trouble with spacing, thicker yarns (at least in the first 2-4 rows) will help achieve a more even set-up. You can also start with a row or two of Twining stitch to even the spaces out - I have a separate video showing twining stitch. (I find this helpful regardless of warping method.) I think it's worth experimenting and seeing which one you prefer! Happy weaving!

Why is it more common to double warp? Is it necessary or is it personal preference depending on what you are weaving? Does it make a difference in the tapestry? I understand that if I am weaving a finer tapestry, I would double warp. Thanks very much in advance. By the way, I tried to look up your website and got an error message: "This site cannot be reached".

Hello Janet, I'm so sorry about the long delay in getting back to you! For double warping: it depends mainly on the thickness of weft yarn you plan on using - so if you're going to be weaving with very chunky yarn, single warping might be enough to give the cloth a bit of rigidity and 'hold' the wefts in place, as it were. It also makes patterns with colour or texture easier to see if your warp and weft are balanced - i.e. if the gaps between the warp is not much larger than the thickness of your weft. Having said that, you can create interesting effects by deviating from these 'rules of thumb'! As for the link, I'm sorry, I should have updated the video. I've had to take a break from this 'side-hustle', hence why my online shop is no longer live. I will update the video caption to reflect this. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment. Happy Weaving!

What are the bars, without the notches, used for on both top & bottom?
@ro.dyeworks
@ro.dyeworks Жыл бұрын
Hello Lori, Thanks for watching and thanks for your question! I'm very sorry about the delayed response. The bars without the notches are for rigidity of the frame and keeping the sides parallel to one another. As the top and bottom warping bars (with the notches) are removable, the extra (un-notched) bars are there to hold the frame together. All the best, Yanna
