Warren Buffett isn't one to predict a stock market crash. But there's no doubt he thinks the market is hot, and is positioning Berkshire Hathaway for what may lie ahead. So today we look at 4 ways Warren Buffett is preparing for a stock market crash in 2021.

Another quote vom Buffet is "Time in the market beats timing the market". How can it make sense to leave 35% of your assets in cash? If there is no crash in 5 years, even with conservative investments you have already lost 35-50% of your return!? For a big investor like Buffet this may make sense, for a private person in my opinion not.

I think the greatest part of lockdowns was the ability to sit down and analyze companies daily to determine their past and future outlook. Wether it technicals or social influences, it’s been great being able to take time out of the day to build a portfolio that is solid even if we have a massive downturn. Oddly enough with all of the shortages and supply lines being hemorrhaged, tech has been great. The shift to commodities and staple boring companies will be the next cycle for investing in my opinion. Tech has been a great run up, but it’s most definitely a prosperity investment. We are nearing a time where bears will reign, as much as I hate to admit it as a long time bull.

@@rockhard9 Find unbiased journalism and start learning market mechanics before you even worry about studying sectors. Macroeconomics and world events make market shifts relatively easy to predict. The Overnight Reverse Repo Market ballooning, Chinas crumbling housing market, and the Urea shortage made this inevitable. Russias invasion was interesting play, I expected an invasion closer to 2024.

The point on cash for Buffett is more about maintaining working capital surely rather than being fully invested in equities. 20% cash would seem sensible at the moment but it may be 2+years before we see a major correction so you need to be able to afford no returns for a prolonged period.

@danguee1

Not quite: if you include inflation and include how much the £ has gone down against a basket of currencies in that time - it's actually fallen massively. 21 years of inflation gives a multipier of almost exactly 0.60. And the pound vs a basket of currencies in that time has gone down 128 to 97 - ie another multiplier of 0.76. Therefore adjusting the current 7109 for those 2 multipliers gives 7109x0.60x0.76=3241 at 1999's values. Not so pretty, huh? Lost half of its real value......... ABSOLUTE BASKET CASE! I guess some people might think: buying opportunity? Not me, thank you - I've been there before and it's never worked out. Just that fact that PER's aren't actually that special - not like Russia with ~6 - means the market is mainly fairly pricing in the shitness of our managers, our money people, our unproductive workers, our focus on non-business stuff (virtue signalling, diversity quotas etc) rather than Excellence by merit.......

on a scale of 1-abyssmal, how bad is taking up a 10% interest loan after a stock market crash to buy in more stocks than you could with just cash? since after a crash it usually climbs more than 10% anually in the begining ?

It's always a risk. Yes, stocks do tend to correct upwards from the bottom, but timing the market is extremely difficult. You might think we've hit rock bottom, only for the stocks to continue going down and reach another bottom. Remember, if stocks go down by 10%, then go up by 10%, you're still down 1%, and if you took a loan to invest in that 1% loss then you're actually down by 1% plus the interest of the loan. I would personally never take a loan to invest in stocks

@@exantiuse497 i mean yeah, but my Norwegian market atm has a 30% qverage return on most Index Funds, some dropping to 20% or below, with 2 actually averaging 60% per year for the last 7 years, one of them hasnt even been affected a single percent by the 2001 bubble, 2008 crash, march of 2020 crash, its almost a strwight line upwards with a 780% growth over tha last 10 year's its run by Norways largest bank so its trustworthy aswell amd has a great history im going to wait for the next correction qnd see if its value drops then invest my cash into it, and look for low interest loans

Is keeping cash not a dangerous game,say I hold cash for 5 years waiting for a crash and I miss out on 250% gains,then the crash happens and it dives 150% then I would still have been up 100%,plus I do not have to time the bottom if I stay in,plus I get to benefit from the bounce from the very bottom if I ride it out and stay in.I just don't like the idea of holding cash.,I think long term ,long term.Even after every crash eventually it will come back to original levels even if you have to wait 3 or 4 years

Brandon! You really talk a lot of sense. Thank you for your videos. I have followed many of the principles you have highlighted and its has really reduced the anxiety in investing. Downturns/crashes are inevitable! You have to always take the right amount of risk to get the returns. That means low or no debt and a large cash reserve.

Quick question. The point about great businesses are overbought and then become overpriced makes sense but a later point is hold high quality businesses. Aren't these point contradictory? For example, f I hold MSFT, AAPL, GOOGL, etc and all are considered significantly overpriced, am I still considered in a reasonable position due to the health of these companies?

Part of Buffett's philosophy is to buy businesses at a margin of safety. It doesn't make much sense to buy Apple or Microsoft in 2021 if you think they and the market are overpriced. But if you had bought them five years ago, it makes sense to keep holding because if they crashed, it's unlikely that you'll go in the red. In the long run, since they're great businesses, the prices should reflect their fair value again.

Warren Buffett also looks for good deals in the Market and stocks are offered to him at a lower price than the retail investor. Basically if you're going to buy the stocks you mentioned be prepared to BUY HIGH AND SELL HIGHER!! 😂

they arent overpriced i think you need to learn some more valuation methods... and i agree with your trepidation, generally the best investors advise holding the good company even while its high... its a instance to instance decision and just do you r best. ideally you want to take from say google when you feel its overpriced, and buy into MU which is more undervalued... then if you never found anything better you reverse it if it shifts... but you dont wanna get out and into bad businesses just because google is high, you better off no tax implications and let the company keep growing... plenty of good stories in this line... but be careful investors rarely hear of the opposites... the i was up 500% and never sold, then got thrashed... not exactly something people like to broadcast, so we tend to take advice from the winners, who likely had tons of luck on their sides as well.

Buffett runs an insurance company, they have to maintain a certain amount of liquidity for business reasons (i.e. insurance claim payouts)... that is more likely than not the primary reason for the cash reserves. Also, his primary investing directive is "don't lose money", so unless there is a compelling investment available, he's likely to remain patient. It's not a bad strategy.

Been in this for about 25 years. I have always done well holding my shares and buying like mad the lower and lower they go. I know it's different if you are about to retire soon, but if you're not, unless it's the end of the entire US economy for good, not only will it eventually go back up, but it will hit new highs.
