Judging from the timing and the biography I finished recently, this was a weird European promo tour where the record company wouldn't pay for the band to go, so Warren played with a recording. Nice that he shouted out Waddy Wachtel's solo, and I love finding live versions with his localized lyric changes.
@ilyafoskin Жыл бұрын
I noticed that. The piano audio wasn't being picked up by a dedicated mic and I could hear it faintly from the vocal mic after the recording faded out. I could see he was unsure about the timing in the beginning before he started singing too and now it's clear that he knew the audio track wasn't going to wait for him so he needed to be spot on. Super weird and I feel bad for him. He should have done some kind of solo acoustic version and it might have become a hidden gem version in our time. Regardless it was nice to see him on my country's main talk show back then.

...gotta say mahalo nui ("thanks a lot") for posting this absolutely Great performance... Warren (who's talents were indisputable within the circle of artists) was at one and the same time, the very epitome of the true Rock artist (in both his genius/skill), but also, a classic example of the very unsavory, outlandish, chronically-inebriated, sarcastic iconoclast that the "business-end" of the recording industry has never come to terms with.... he made Them Very uncomfortable (just one way We knew he was the real deal)...as those of Us who have been 'on the bus' for the 50 years after, as teens, We knew this was Our music, the ugly reality of an artform which Required a businessman-salesman (of what They called "The Product") to get-out-The-Word (& who were, themselves part-of the very issue the artists were singing-about/indicting) has been one essential block in the wall of what We have now made the 'music of the entire planet'.... an ever-uneasy symbiosis where people like Warren would never get the credit he so richly disturbs.... but.... Thanks for This addition to my library...

Yeah, the show is called The Late Late show (technically the longest running talk show in the world, btw) at the time Ireland had a single TV station, if you wanted to promote anything it was pretty much the only place to go, on the other hand literally everyone watched it, fuck else are you going to do on a Friday night in 1981 in Ireland, so there's a very good chance that a whole load of his actual target audience got to see and were introduced to him. Also, there's an old couple in the middle of the audience who seem really in to it.

It always pisses me off when I hear the Kid Rock tune that stole this melody. They play that crap from him regularly where I live. I hear the first three notes and automatically think Warren. Then I get that poser, Rock.

To set this in context, if this was the Late Late Show, it is a weird, peculiarly Irish show. It is a mixture of talk show and town hall discussion. People in the audience would not be a typical music show audience...He was great though.
