Even with Anakin being dead, he could still have had more reappearances as a force ghost later on. I still would love to have a scene where Tahiri gets a final dialogue with Anakin.

Anakin’s death didn’t directly lead to Jacen’s fall. Jacen’s fall is a mixture of motivations-but it largely stemmed from visions of the future and his particular personality and mental aspects-his sense that the future was on his shoulders, and his feelings of a life empty.

Man, Star by Star broke me. I'm a 40 year old man who was 18 when that book came out. I've never, in my life, sobbed OPENLY like that before due to a fictional character's death. I remember my family kept asking me what was wrong with me for the next few days because I'd just sob out of the blue. ALL I WANTED WAS ANAKIN AND TAHIRI TO BE HAPPY! Seriously though, that kiss between them was so adorable and wholesome.

i'm on the last book of the Corellian Trillogy as we speak, and the way nine year old Anakin Solo is doing things with the force (mostly in regards to his ability with machines and technology) that's CONSTANTLY making people go "what the space-balls is up with this kid? how is he doing this? this feels IMPOSSIBLE!" and hyping up his potential. it felt really really strange to know the dramatic irony his story's going to kind of fizzle out with a, admittedly, badass last stand. i do 100% think his potential was wasted even if you ARE right that the EU DID make as best they could with the fallout

This is going to be controversial, you are all free to disagree, but this is my opinion Anakin's death made the series feel more realistic. The Yuuzhan Vong were poisoning entire planets, murdering thousands. Having a main character die makes them feel like a more serious threat. Evan's theory about the Vong's disconnect from the Force allowing them to circumvent prophecy feels almost completely correct.

I think untimely deaths and wasted potentially, grief and the feeling of the ones leaving prematurely are a important part of histories ( more in a war) the feeling that anyone can die is necessary and to be fair, the character got the enough development to mean something, to his death to be consequential. I think even, is better sometimes to keep the sentiment of love to character with all the "could have been" scenarios as a part of that.

Anakin Solo has always been an interesting character. He could have played a major role in the sequel trilogy, and would have been a great foil to Jacen Solo. But no. Instead we get Kylo Ren and a Mary Sue character that has no development. The only good movie of the sequel trilogy was The Force Awakens. Disney butchered these characters, and now, the Star Wars Universe is lesser for it. To be honest, I don't like the fact that Jacen Solo becomes Darth Caedus, because I feel like the Sith Order should have died with Darth Vader and Darth Sidious. Disney did not make Kylo Ren a Sith, but even that does not douse my resentment of Episodes VIII and IX. I do not speak for all fans, but my personal opinion is that you cannot mix Legends and Canon together, because they are just too different. You can do this before the events of the original trilogy, but you cannot do this after 30 ABY. I never read any books that take place after Return of the Jedi, and that's my fault why I do not like Darth Caedus. I prefer for him to stay Jacen Solo.

The way I personally see it is that Anakin could have been brought back by doing a HEAVILY altered version of the Sequel Trilogy. Instead of revolving around the map to Luke, let's have the First Order (made of people like Natasi Daala and other disgruntled Imperials who disagreed with Jagged) and emissaries of the One Sith (possibly Wyyrlokk I and Vestara Khai, now Darth Judicar, similar to Snoke/Kylo) posing as new Banite Sith, hunting down a fabled clone stash, containing among the many, a supposed clone of Anakin Solo, tieing things together with Riptide and Crosscurrent. What comes afterwards is whether Anakin wished to come back or not and all the consequences that come with that.

I think the main problem wasn't that he died early, but more that he died randomly. He sacrificed himself to save everyone else from a threat (voxyn) that appeared a few chapters ago and was gone by the end of the book. In fact, even worse, to save them from a threat that appeared 30 seconds ago (Nom Anor and his soldiers) so that Jacen could destroy the voxyn. The best comparison would be not Anakin Skywalker randomly dying on Mustafar and the story continuing without him, I think it would much better compare to him dying in a random Clone Wars episode, sacrificing himself so Obi-Wan can destroy some new Separatist weapon or something. If they needed to have him die in NJO, they should have at least made the accomplishment of his sacrifice much, much bigger. Ending the entire war - level of bigger. For example (I'm just making up random ideas), directly starting the revolt of the Shamed Ones. Or dying above Myrkr, but then doing something very important and pivotal as a force ghost. Even all of those ideas feel a bit too insignificant for such an important character

I'm reading the Legacy of the Force series (don't want to read the Yuuzhang Vong war as there's too many pages and too many books; unless someone can persuade me otherwise) and honestly from the way that they mention Anakin Solk throughout, I do not believe he is a waste of a character. I can understand the frustration though. One that you've kind of alluded to or outright stated in the video is the fact that Anakin Solo would actually reach his potential unlike Anakin who couldn't. Anakin Solo's death did contribute somewhat to Jacen's fall but other factors were much more important. His family or rather his daughter being the highest concern. Han and Leia can't catch a break. I felt for Han when he raged at the fact that Jacen named the starship after his dead son. This is probably a good leading point into how people take Jacen's fall to the dark side and the return of the Sith. I've heard a lot of him going one-eighty yet there's other people that point out how torture does that as well as visions, the same thing his grandfather fell to. Ironically, he succeeded per se.

@EvanNova95 Knowing that Anakin would've been the 2nd coming to the whole "chosen one" prophecy kind of recontextualizes the whole EU following the new jedi order books. Because if Anakin was not killed by the Yuuzhan Vong, we wouldn't see the Jedi trapped in this never ending conflict with the Sith, at least not for some many years. Meaning the events of Legacy of the Force, the stuff with Abeloth, and even perhaps Darth Krayt's New Sith Order never would've happened. We also could've seen people like Cade Skywalker not be inherently chained to the Destiny of the Skywalker bloodline as always having to contend with the latest incarnation of the Sith. Adding a bit more tragedy to the Skywalker bloodline as a whole. PS: I would love to see a speculation video on what you think could've happened if the Legacy comics continued.

Anakin Solo, a promising young lad. Though, much like his namesake, tragedy struck him and would end in the hope for another to continue on. It's a shame he died, but I wouldn't say it was a "wasted potential" sort of thing. Also, for 16:40 , that would've been wild 💀 definitely feels like a nightmare of a situation

I just finished the Yuuzhan Vong War and let me tell you guys, this entire video is just gold to come back to and consider after reading the series. Han Solo's three kids represented the different parts of Anakin Skywalker. Jacen was the moral side, Jaina was the pilot, and Anakin was the power. Honestly, I'm just of the opinion that Anakin should have lived, but Luke didn't have to die for Anakin to take his place. Best non verses video I've listened to/ seen in a while Evan. I think Anakin Solo's death was a waste because in my opinion he was by far the most interesting character of the Solo kids. While Jaina and Jacen got a lot of development from his passing it didn't give either of them the protagonist potential that was on Anakin from his introduction. Between the weight of his name and all the potential everyone else saw in him it made for a really interesting story of a young kid trying to undo past wrongs without the first clue of how. That he ended up becoming the hero everyone knew he could be only to have that snuffed out so early felt like a real slap in the face as a reader. Not to mention that this was the same kid they killed Chewie protecting and he never even got to grow up? Nah, that's a waste in my eyes. They should've killed Jacen.

I just got to his death in Star by Star, I knew it was coming as did I with Chewbacca but damn was it hard, especially once Luke and Leia felt his death. But then again he was not a waste, he died as a hero and made his choices. And now he’s reunited with all other past Jedi including his master Ikrit and his grandfather who he was named after.

My biggest problem with Anakin's death is its handling. In the beggining of the book we learn of a "big threat macguffin" the voxyn, that dont really feel threatening, then there is a suicide mission which (who could expect) ends with bunch of people dying, somehow macguffin gets destroyed, and for some reason cant be created again, book ends. His death just feels inconsequential. I think it would be much better if he died rescuing Tahiri on Yavin 4. They could give Jaina and Jacen bigger role so his death would affect them more and that would be enough. Most of other characters in Star by Star were unnecesary in my opinion. They just taken screen time (page time?) from main characters and acted as cannon fooder.

You know, I'm now hoping to see a versus battle with him :p

So I like your what if, I do think it’s a bit too saccharine. The whole point of the Myrkr mission, the Vong war is the sort of innocence wholesome bubble the family was ensconced in was shattered-Chewie died and then Anakin. This affects everyone both positively and negatively. But it’s a disservice to the claimed stakes of the Vong war to have all the solo kids make it unscathed.

In my opinion if a character's death is considered a waste and there is so much backlash for it then that means that the character was brilliant and his death really impacted the fandom which immediately makes it the opposite of a waste. If nobody cared about Anakin's character his death wouldn't have been as meaningful or painful and so THEN it would have been a true waste

As this storyline was being published at the same time as the prequel movies, I do believe it's as simple as George not wanting 2 anakins active at the same time. I think the chosen one is merely the person most likely to influence the fate of the galaxy. In Anakin Skywalker case the was the chosen one destined to bring balance to the force, but that was just the Jedi prophecy. The Sith had their own prophecy The Rule of Two, where they needed a master and an apprentice to rule the galaxy. Anakin Skywalker had the option to fulfil the Jedi or the Sith prophecy. Because the Yuuzhan Vong are cut of from the force Anakin Solo was blocked from fulfilling his prophecy. Had the Yuuzhan Vong not appeared I think Lost Tribe of the Sith would have emerged a lot sooner and Anakin Solo would have had an important role in that. Just like Obi Wan and Sidious where opposites for Anakin Skywalker, Jacen and Jaina were suppsed to be same for Anakin Solo. In the Fate of the Jedi series I think they were trying to make the same thing with Allana Solo as the new Chosen One. (I've only read these once when they came out so I'm not remembering them as well)

I haven't read the NJO books and the "aftermath" books (i.e. the rest of the Legends timeline), though I know how the story progresses. I like the -subversion of expectations- curveball of having Anakin die. You expect the older, legacy characters to die and make way for the new blood, new heroes. It just makes sense, narratively. I know Lucas forbade the killing of the legacy characters, which as an aspiring writer I don't like, but the results of which I don't exactly hate either. I don't love things like how Mara Jade died, or even Caedus in his entirety. What I do like with the way Legends played out, is that war doesn't discriminate, it takes anyone and everyone. I feel like Chewie and Anakin dying raised the stakes.

Tahiri and Anakin also get married. My personal view of Tahiri is that she is a weak character-not in power so much as she is fundamentally a follower, and has a somewhat dependent personality. This is realistic, and something we don’t see much-someone who at the end of the day, feels lost and purposeless when not with someone else. Also Anakin surviving very much effects Jacen’s mindset, if he goes on his sojourn at all. If he doesn’t teach Ben, that changes a lot of his activities in the DNt era, especially with TK.

As someone who is interested after reading wookiepedia and has started the New Jedi Order (at this time I am only 2 books in), I will say though I think they could have gone for an story line to have him mirror Darth Vader by having survived but captured by the Vong, maybe have him captured after being resuscitated by the Vong but because he of their immunity to the force Leia or anyone else can't sense him coming back because he is corrupted and maybe a spirit such as Darth Vader takes over. I am not saying Anakin Solo gets possessed by Skywalker/Vader but something similar happens when Anakin Skywalker killed Mace Windu. Leading to a fallen Anakin Solo waging a one man guerilla war against the Vong but at the same time has several clashes with New Republic/Galactic Alliance forces and it takes a meeting of his family to have him redeem himself as unlike Darth Vader, Anakin Solo could very well tap into the dark side, only for him to still try to fight honorably like a Jedi would showing mercy or trying his hardest to save civilians but goes into a frenzy if he fails. But that is just what I think.
