Well, well, well! My childhood is coming back to haunt me. I grew up being taught this "Serpent Seed Doctrine." It was taught by an evangelist named William Branham who preached from the 1930s-60s, when he died in a car accident. William Branham also had deep ties to various White Supremacist groups during those times.

Sometimes such analyses prove fruitful: if Cain and Abel were twins, it draws even stronger parallels between them and Esau and Jacob (favored younger son) -- this comparison strengthens the brotherly reconciliation elder brother Esau initiates by contrasting it with the brother-killing elder brother Cain initiated. Ofc, this is something that can be drawn from the text itself, not something dreamed up, which seems to be the case with this Serpent's Seed idea.
@jenniferhunter4074
@jenniferhunter4074 4 ай бұрын
@@MM-jf1me Yes. We could even talk about how the younger one cheats and steals the rightful due that belongs to the elder. Look guys.. all us gardeners know how hard it is to grow food. Meanwhile, exactly how hard is it to raise a lamb? The ewe is doing most of the hard work. We can even refer to the Prodigal son story where the younger sibling wastrel screws up and the hard working dutiful eldest son has to deal with the parental nonsense. The conflict between animal agriculture and agriculture. Who gets to use the fields for domesticated animals such as cows or sheep? The inversion of this god's blessings because generally speaking, the eldest gets the first portion but in this religion, the younger gets these opportunities. The folly of the eldest who fixates on hard work but doesn't get the big picture. We should be able to extract meaning from even the most blank of sources. Our human ability generates meaning. Our species if an artistic species. A creative species. You may look at a blank canvas and see.. potential. Future. Meanwhile, another will look at it and see purity and innocence frozen in time. And I will look at it and see .. that cost x amount of money but I like it because my mind needs quiet. We are all extracting meaning. It doesn't have to be pretty. It doesn't have to be staged. It doesn't have to be created by an approved artist. Art is what we see meaning in. it's a very recursive and internal process.

I was wondering if "conceived" must mean literally simultaneously if one is speaking of the conception of twins from two different fathers -- technically, even fraternal twins with the same father are created from two separate conceptions, but would this be considered possible anciently, and even if it were, would it matter when speaking of a woman becoming pregnant when she would be pregnant at once whether through one or more conceptions?

The creator's ceiling looks very problematic, just saying. Those bubbles/undulations may mean a roof leak, and probable failure of the ceiling quite soon. So fix the roof first, dry-wall and plaster the ceiling, and then paint. I have less of a problem with a snake being the "devil" [or not] than a snake with vocal chords, but that's just me. A talking snake is obviously of the supernatural realm, so I guess if there is one there would be lefty gods, right wing gods, and independents. By definition, a good god would be a lefty, and a right wing god would root for Genghis Khan or somebody like that. Snakes are usually independent anyway. Not real groupies like fur-balls. Snakes are way cool, particularly pythons. Their skins are warm but silky-not slimy at all, and they are strong. Beautiful animals. Snakes have to make a living like everybody else, and "devil or not" I don't like the bible's point of view on snakes, or the religious idea of dominating all life and the earth. More the attitude of a mining giant or fascist than a good god anyway.

So it is rare but twins with different fathers is a thing. But yes in this story Cain and Abel are twins as their story is a retelling of the divine twins myth.

Joseph Campbell wasn't an expert at anything other than pushing his beliefs as scholarly. A "divine twins" myth may happen in Indo-European legends more than twice, but the peoples of the Levant are not within the IE family unless you count the Persians. Expecting a story in the Hebrew Bible to fit an IE pattern is colonialist garbage.

Your lack of Hebrew shows. His claim that "etz" (tree) is related to "bone" (etzem) is sensible, although overstated.

Those words come from totally different roots, they just happen to sound similar. That's like confusing English "tree" with "treat".

@@PlatinumAltaria No, they don't come from totally different roots. Three letter roots are often extensions of two letter roots, and this is a clear case in point.
@PlatinumAltaria

@@annaclarafenyo8185 Except this isn't an extension, they're two unrelated words. The proto-Semitic roots are *ʕiṣ́- and *ʕaṯ̣m-, which look completely different. The first clue should have been that bones and trees have nothing to do with each other. Can you show any reason to think these words are related?
@annaclarafenyo8185
@annaclarafenyo8185 4 ай бұрын
@@PlatinumAltaria Proto-semitic constructions are conjectural, I would have to see the data for the construction in this case, I don't believe it. Bones can be viewed as the "tree" of the body, there's a perfectly valid reason to assume the two words are connected. That doesn't necessarily mean they are, but it shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

Dan, I subscribe to your channel, because you have a necessary perspective as an academic. I appreciate that. In my own studies, I believe that the realm of evil is the human ego, that place within each of us that is dominated by deception. For example, isn't it more likely that during the temptations of the Christ, he was hungry (fully human), saw the rock and thought to himself that HE could turn the rock into a loaf of bread? In my view, his ego was speaking (a.k.a. the devil). I try to place myself in the situation, for I, like you, are a "son of God". I'd love to get your response. I've spent many years studying the self and the ego, and Craig Nakken writes that suicide, for example, is, in fact, homicide in which the self finally kills the ego.

That's neat. But ego came from Freud a few thousand years after the bible divided human personhood into body, heart/mind, strength. Or heart, soul, mind. Plato divided the soul into rational, spirited and appetitive. I would argue that you are reading what Plato called appetitive and what Freud called the ego back into a Jewish context where those concepts were unknown.

Or to put it another way, you can harmonize these different sources and make something new, cool, and useful to you. But you can't say that's what he bible said/meant.

Yes! Serpent seed doctrine is my favorite. It's the only way the narrative makes sense, and a global flood debunks any racist application of the theory. Nahash obviously wasn't a snake as he was the smartest creature and snakes are reptiles with tiny brains and aren't intelligent and can't talk. "Eating the fruit" is an ancient euphemism for sex, and Eve "shared the fruit with Adam" thus they did an threesome and both had sex with Nahash, though it's unclear if it was just greek frottage or modern western style gay sex. They were ashamed of nakedity because their transgression was sexual. They also were commanded to be vegan, so the sacrifice of sheep and offering "the fat thereof" ties into the trickery of prometheus of greek myth. The mark of Cain was to protect him because Abel murdered one of God's creatures that had the breath of life and so his own life was forfeit. Cain's offering wasn't accepted because his bloodline was morganatic as he wasn't Adam's. Abel's blood cried out from the earth because the fantabulous race of Abelites planned was aborted, which is why they needed Seth. Nahash then married Lilith and fathered the demons. When Jesus said they are of their father the devil he's speaking directly to the demons not those they possessed, and also said this race killed all the prophets from Abel to Zachariah. Thus as Cain killed Abel and the Cainites went extinct in the flood only if the demons were patrilinealy of the same race could this make sense.
