There was an annoucement a few weeks back. Apparently Mappa considers Chainsaw Man an "underwhelming success". In other words, it did less well than they expected it but it returned it's entire investment. Since it's pretty much a passion project, there will definitely be a season 2.

To answer the title: No, it was not a flop. The CEO of MAPPA has confirmed it was a financial success. However, he went on to say it did not perform as well as they had expected. MAPPA was obviously hoping for it to reach the same popularity as JJK, but it failed to do so. That does not mean we're not getting a second season. It made money, and more importantly, the series is 100% funded by MAPPA. There is a thing called sunk cost. MAPPA has invested a lot into the series so far, and even if it didn't make as big of a profit as they'd hoped, it wouldn't make financial sense to drop the IP entirely. Instead, they'll likely make changes to the direction/style in season 2 in an effort to address the complaints and boost popularity.
@FidelCattto

The thing about sunk costs is they're gone you cannot get them back and any decision moving forward is completely separate from the previous expenditure. If it is not worth spending the extra money to continue the series then it doesn't matter how much they spent previously

CSM is an awkward length to do 24 episodes. The 12 episodes we got covered about 1/3 of Part 1, so the entire story would fit pretty neatly into 36 episodes. They could do 24 episodes for season 2 and finish it, but I don't know how likely that is for a show that underperformed expectations.

They could've covered the bomb devil and international assassination arc too in the later half, which i think could boost the popularity of anime quite significantly, as the first half (and that's season 1 btw) is nothing compared to the insanity of later arcs. Ps.- Although the 12 ep length is also somehow understandable and a sweet spot for them, as the arcs in csm are pretty quick and short to adapt.... and if they would adapt 24 eps, then they won't have much content left in part 1 to adapt for another season (unless they use the strategy what ufotable did with demon slayer).

@@alialkuwari8385 If they did 24 episodes, that would have covered through to the end of International Assassins. I agree that covering that much would have definitely been a boon to popularity, but it would be a very big ask from a production perspective. I'm with Connor, weekly updates are ultimately better. Anticipation builds, you feel like you're waiting for something great on a specific day, a reward after a shitty work day or something, something positive, and you KNOW will give you some joy. You feel more involved with the series emotionally and mentally, it is a much healthier model to follow than "release everything on day 1"

@johndinner4418

I agree that there's a good feeling, but I disagree it's ultimately better. It's down to preference, if your series was going to make an impact on you due to its quality, it doesn't matter if you watched it weekly or all together, in fact if anything it's more likely it's better to watch it all together so you can catch all the details easier and not forget things. A weekly watch may indeed enhance an otherwise boring show, but that ultimately means the show may just be a little boring that you have to space it out to not feel fatigued. That's fine, but it ultimately is not an indication of a show's quality more than it is how it's written and if it's written for weekly views or not. Which, the shows that fit that criteria the most, are non sequential shows that you don't need to watch every episode technically. Like Pokemon and Power Rangers. To clarify, I'm not saying one way is better than the other in terms of general enjoyment, I'm speaking purely on series that will impact you deeply, rather than how you'd rather space out your viewings. Some comments mention Jojo, but it's quite honestly a terrible example, because not only is jojo pretty close to being written as a weekly show already, of which most short season shonen are not, jojo part 6 was just really badly paced in general.

The manga fans loved the over the top-ness of the manga. Extremely fast pace and over the top facial expressions. The vividness shown on the book covers. The anime director hated it and removed all of those aspects and created a show that all the scenes look gray and depressing. Everyone speaks too calmly. And the director doesn’t know how to interpret the scenes in the manga. For example, in the anime where denji and power ambushed kishibe, denji stupidly waited kishibe breaking all the spears before attacking. But in the manga, denji attacked Kishibe at the same time. The manga fans got pissed at these little flaws. When the devil hunters attacked the building to fight the sword man, the anime showed Kobeni before entering the building so the anime ruined the scene where kobeni saved aki which was suppose to be a surprise. These little changes for no reason were criticized by the manga fandom. And the future devil was suppose to be screaming like crazy while he was just humming quietly in the anime. These are not my opinions. I saw these comments on Twitter. I personally liked the anime when I first saw it but it could be just because I didn’t read the manga first.

I was so impressed by the animation, art style and direction that i picked up the manga and read it in a day and I knew right there that it's not going to meet the insane hype it's getting for just 12 episodes. The pacing is so fast after the katana devil arc, the story gets more depth, world gets way bigger and characters get more fleshed out and insane shit happens (have to say the art style in the manga is so gorgeous, i read the coloured edition and it was so good), if they just covered the next 2 (even 1 and a half arcs in the next 12 episodes), it would have easily gotten success on par with JJK.

As an Anime only, I think the reason for Chainsaw Man not being as successful as they hope is simply that it wasn't "hype" or flashy. I really enjoy the character and how the design feel very cinematic, but there is something about the action sequences or the climatic moment just doesn't feel memorable. Like don't get me wrong, the animation is great fluid, but the overall fight scenes direction just feel okay. Maybe beside the final fight on the train, there just not many thing I remember about the fights. Nah I think it had the flashiness and the hype. I litterally only watched the damn anime because of word of mouth. Its problem is that it's incredibly forgetable if you have never read the manga. It's to short, to fast paced and you don't have time to get invested into characters because they are dying by episode 6. Had it gotten 24 episodes I think it would have been way more memorable. As someone who has never read the manga I can definitely feel why the manga is so hyped but the show hasn't given me anything yet to really fall into it the way JJK did.

No, this was a frequent misinfo. The BR sales posted were only from one store chain, but not MAPPA’s own online shop which had the same BRs but with added bonus goodies for no extra cost. As virtually all anime BR buyers in Japan are collectors at heart, this is where they were going to buy it. The sales from MAPPA’s site were never posted, so no we do not have actual numbers on the BR sales. No comment on the Japanese fanbase’s views on the anime, but I raise an eyebrow considering the most frequent complaint I heard from them was disliking the VAs purely because most weren’t well known, which is just a ridiculous view towards acting quality.
@chainsaw8507

@@doctordoom85 It's not misinfo. We know what a lot of JP fans thought of the anime, because we can read their reviews. We also heard Mappa's CEO say they will try and make changes to target people who buy Blu Rays. If the Blu Ray sales were good, they wouldn't need to make changes to target people who buy them. You are right that we don't know how many sales were on the Mappa store though, but even if it was 3x as many sales as we think the anime got, it'd still be pretty bad sales wise. BR sales have been shite in general even for the most popular, beloved shows out there. People don't buy physical media like that for such a high price tag if they don't include some exclusive goodies that make it worthwhile for fans and collectors. Even in Japan, most would rather buy other official merch and just stream their favourite shows/movies. The anime committees need to finally fecking realise that we are in 2023 and this has been the growing trend for several years now, even without covid.

@@chainsaw8507 I’d recommend watching Otaku Spirit’s video on the topic. He explained pretty thoroughly why Chainsaw Man did not perform badly. I especially didn’t realize people were actually comparing the sales to Demon Slayer’s which is beyond stupid. Demon Slayer’s success was like Avengers Endgame level of success, using it for comparison to determine success of ANY other show is totally unfair. He also points out BR sales are becoming less relevant, streaming and international licensing is where the money is. Christ, MAPPA likely got a buttload of cash before the first episode even aired by how much Crunchyroll must have thrown at them for the streaming rights. Especially as this was a rare instance of an anime being hyped up FAR before its release, even Demon Slayer didn’t have anywhere close to that much pre-hype.

I think the boys are totally right on chainsaw man’s popularity. 1. Way less anime content has been released than jujitsu kaisen 2. The mass appeal of the show is way lower. Chainsaw man is weird and experimental hence the release on jump plus. I think overall the show hasn’t had time to cook and will never be as “easy” to consume as jujitsu which is much more straightforward to enjoy. Both shows are a lot of fun, I hope chainsaw doesn’t get cancelled for not being as marketable as jjk though.

Even tho I feel like season 1 had a good ending point (season starts with denji alone and hungry and ends with him laughing and eating a bunch with his two new friends), 12 episodes was just not enough for it to try to reach JJK popularity, I feel like the season ended just as people were super into the show. It obviously wouldn't have the same mass appeal as JJK, they're just too different, but I felt like EVERYONE was watching it, which makes me so sad to see it was only considered a "moderate success", the manga is one of my favorites and the last thing I want to see is a season 2 with considerable budget cuts (season 2 will need that budget lol). It also works out if there are 3 or 4 shows I'm watching, becuase I have 7 days to catch up and I can take out 30 minutes each day to watch a specific one.

The shows i watch weekly stick in my mind way more than the shows i binge. If i watch a show weekly i have time to process all the information and reflect on what happened each episode. but most of the time, when i binge a show. Im not going to remember half of what happened a month after i finished it.

CSM failed in japan more because of cultural differences and apparently japanese fans really despiced the anime adaptation. Let me throw some bulletpoints in order to add some context to the anime's failure: - The adaptation is less messy than the manga and has too many quiet calm scenes. - The director felt very inspired by Tarantino and japanese fans don't like that direction. - Characters like Himeno and Kobeni were hated specially the first by Aki fangirls specially because although she wasa mess, Aki felt something for her too. - One if not the most important was casting Tomori Kusunoki as Makima, fans claimed her voice wasn't what the wanted for the character and that her was still an amateur in the VA industry I still believe the anime has a chance but only if the focus on the western market because the japanese asked for a whole new adaptation or to at least fire the current director.

Weekly works if they don't cliffhanger bait. Currently watching Sopranos when I visit my parents and there is something satisfying watching a series one episode at a time, when the episode end at the end of a story break. The counter is Bleach when you get passed the 250 ep mark or Arcane where episodes leave on cliffhangers making you crave that next episode. If you overuse the cliffhangers, people wait to binge.

True, demon slayer (especially season 3) overuse cliffhanger too much, and the abundant of flashback break the action also not help either.

Im actually curious about how Japan is going to react to JJK S2. S2 is VASTLY superior to S1 and breaks the mold a lot. However, after seeing the response to CSM, certain things that happen in S2 might drive off the casual Japanese audience they are marketing to. They might be invested enough to stick around at this point, but i could see some pushback.

JJK is just pure fun, everything about is just in tune so viewer has great time. All characters are likable, temp and story is going ham. From episode 1 to 24 it is just pumping. CSM was different type of show because we as first time having encounter with it is very weird to say the least. Half time we just wondering what the fuck is going on and characters are so alien and unexplainable. And I liked a lot because of it. That is also why I do agree that 12 episodes weren't enough since we didn't have enough time to make more sense of it, it is basically just an intro.

I think you guys nailed it on the head with regards to 24 eps> 12 eps making a HUGE difference, along with how it’s dropped. Same can be said for Spy Family, the hype stayed strong because we knew we were getting another dozen episodes later that year, and the next season shortly thereafter. And with Oshi No Ko, the hype after episode 1 was so huge, but I knew it would fall off afterwards because there was no way for them to sustain that level of interest with 22 minute episodes week after week. It’s still good, but it hasn’t even come close to being as interesting as the debut was. A strange strategy for that one

I think it depends of how much the show catch you because I’m ok watching week to week, most of the shows I’m watching this season I watch them weekly but with heavenly delusions I had to stop watching after the 2 ep because i was really invested so if I kept watching it weekly I probably wouldn’t resist and pick the manga instead so I decided to binge the whole season after it finishes

I'm really hoping that they do 24 episodes for the second season of CSM cause that finishes the whole story of Part 1 off. Bomb Woman/International Assassins/Gun Devil/[SPOILERS] all back to back not only encapsulates CSM's fast pacing but also puts a nice little now with it and season 1

The reason it is a flop is because it only appeals to hardcore weebs, as somone newer to anime, I have never felt more uncomfortable watching an anime. The characters in this anime are exactly how you should not act in real life. On top of how gross the characters treat the woman, the woman are also sexualized every episode. Watching the anime, It definitley could have potental if Denji didnt want Makima to give him her fart juice and bite her armpit prickles, like honestly wtf is this, if you actually enjoy this anime you have problems.

This reminds me a lot of Re:Zero and Mushoku Tensei. Re:Zero is an amazing series however the 1st season despite all the good parts only really gets you started in the world and doesn't give you a lot to really dissect until the second season came out and added so much and also expanded on season 1's many amazing plot and story points. This compared to Mushoku Tensei which not only gave you that 1st taste but kept serving you dish after dish of characters, story and world building content really helped drive hype and keep it extremely relevant the whole time and it didn't take them 4 years (rip the wait for Re:Zero season 2) for them to announce even more additional content so the hype cycle is still fresh and will most likely remain so. So basically I love both and screw the wait we had for season 2 of Re:Zero.

I think jujutsu kaisen was more successful as it had a lot more action and is a lot more "normal" story wise than chainsaw man i still think both of them are amazing and both have great stories but jujutsu kaisen is the most normie friendly Now that i saw the whole thing is basically what the boys said 😅

Yeah, JJK is more anime normie friendly. CSM is very much for the niche cause it tackles things in the most unusual ways. There's also the whole thing that people went in expecting a true typical shounen anime. There's a reason why older anime/manga fans like CSM cause they're tired of the typical one.

Wasn't part of it because the Japanese community for Chainsaw Man hated on the anime because the director wanted it to be more "realistic" for the sake of the cinematography, meaning that some of the funny reactions including certain faces that Denji or Power would make. But that's based on the KZfaq videos I watched about it, and I don't think that it's the main reason, just that it might be a part of the reason.
@thomasffrench3639
@thomasffrench3639 Жыл бұрын
It’s not that it was realistic, it was that it was drab and slow. The manga is snappy and really over the top. It mixed comedy and horror really well, and the comedy didn’t really hit
@johibba
@johibba Жыл бұрын
@@thomasffrench3639 What I meant by realistic was that there were minor changes that fans of the manga, especially for fans in Japan, hated because it took away some of the over-the-top facial expressions and reactions. In the video I watched they showed a tweet that also had a picture of the same scene, one from the manga and the other from the anime and it was similar, but the comedy didn't hit because it didn't have the facial expressions you see in the manga. It's like looking at one piece and deciding that everyone should make realistic humanly possible facial expressions

i was absolutely in love with the manga,, read it nonstop in like 5 days, and then reread slowly, i was beyond ecstatic to watch the anime,, but then i only watched the first episode,,, i don’t know what it was the turned me off from it, part of it was the fact that since i loved it so much i was so nervous they were gonna do something wrong or mess it up that i just couldn’t bring myself to watch it, along with hyping up all my friends for it and not wanting to let them down if indeed they did mess it up,, but then another part just i don’t know, felt different, and didn’t keep me hooked and intrigued like the manga did,, i think also honestly how bright the color was put me off a bit,, cuz the manga was so much darker,, which is why that one particular scene in a graveyard hit so hard i think
