Smith and ESPN's new documentary 'Up For Debate' when he told Stephen A. that he hates what he and Skip did to sports media by inspiring bad copy cat debate shows. Dan was interviewed for nearly two hours for the documentary but now wonderes if his portion got cut out?!

I'm not a huge fan but blaming Stephen and Skip for the state of sports media is like blaming Steph for the state of the NBA. It's not their fault people with 1/4 of their talent found success copying their style and overrunning the medium with mediocrity.

Blame CNN’s Crossfire, and if you haven’t seen it yet, the episode with Jon Stewart destroying the hosts. That was the start of the decline in professional journalism that I can remember. Stephen A wasn’t the cause. Before him there was Woody and Skip on Cold Pizza. Even without those 3, there would have been others that would pave the way to the crap that we have today.

The difference between SAS and Skip is the show First Take was literally built to be what your initial thought was on the important sports stories of the days so long as you had some prior knowledge to avoid sounding like a complete fool who lacked context. That model worked perfectly because for the most part SAS and Skip were being their true selves turned up to a 100 just to be entertaining, most of the imitators are just after the engagement that come with a hot take, so now the hot take doesn't need any prior context to support it.

SAS has done quite a bit of journalistic malpractice. He has gone on tirades at times leaving out key context of something someone has side, ignoring what someone actually did say, etc. He went off on LeBron a few weeks ago about how LeBron didn't take accountability for his play in the Mavs series over a discussion him and JJ Reddick were having and completely left off the part of the clip where LeBron explicitly stated he played like trash and had he played better the Heat could have won, SAS simply left out the clip and completely mischaracterized their conversation. That's only one example then there was his weird threats towards Kevin Durant a few years back and so many other issues. To me what SAS does is worse, he is a journalist, he put in the work, then the money and fame came and he's often abandoned it for the sake of entertainment.

Its a tv product. Remember when first take was 1st and 10 and even during the name change when they would start the show about the days top headline and they would talk to a reporter, then it went to skip? That in theory was a better model because it grew hype, but that was only the first segment. They switched the model i believe when stephen a came aboard and they abandoned the story part and went straight debate for 2 hours. Its because of numbers and giving the people what they want. Dan is delusional and bitter when he makes it as if the guy who wrote the beat for a pro team should be the only one to talk sports about that team or sport. We are all spectators and we all have an opinion. Im going to get off the lawn now.

I like Dan as a person/journalist but his obsession with SAS, Skip & Shannon Sharpe is disturbing at the point. It's basically gossip talk and I feel like he does it on purpose to help with ratings for his show which, if we're being honest, is mediocre at best. It's a shame what these sports shows & podcasts have become today. Everybody is clout chasing & gossiping about each other for likes and ratings.
