You've got to give credit to XMG though for being Transparent as they can about Issues with their Laptops, and working on Remedies and Solutions as soon as possible. We've seen other Laptop Companies hide issues under the Rug Before, so for XMG to do this means they care about both their Brand Image and their Customers. Even if the Performance on the RTX 4070 didn't improve much, XMG made a conscious choice here, and a Good One at that. Appreciate your Coverage on this!

@@tanthokg I would accept 7% if it didn't also come with a price increase. At least if it were the same msrp you could still say it's an improvement. Based on pricing it appears to be an actual regression.

I bet that the 2.4% improvement comes from the 13th gen CPU and not the GPU.

Cpu improvement, newer ram, better cooling solution, faster NVMEs. All of those add up and I'm confident that the real difference is not even 5%, and quite possibly 0% at 1080p and then negative numbers at 1440p and specially 4k (due to bandwidth)

Thanks for being honest. I still prefer 4070: 7% better performance using less energy is a much better option, specially if you can shop for a good deal.

I do believe that 3070 ti is cheaper than 4070 but in some countries like Indonesia, 3070ti became less common as i could only found 2-3 laptops out of hundreds of laptops sold here and finding them might be pain in the @ss 🥲

If I remember correctly, Tom's Hardware published a 4070 laptop review with a Gigabyte Aorus model that was initially very lackluster, then the review was updated with a mention of faulty drivers from Nvidia, but it still seems to barely break above many 3070Ti models.

Congrats! That's a beast for sure. I have a Legion 5 Pro with 6800h and 3070 and have been very happy with it. ($1600 US) The only times I get unsatisfactory performance is when I'm asking it to do unreasonable things like cyberpunk with ray tracing. Glad I didn't wait for 40 series, as I wouldn't even be able to afford a 4070 and a 4060 is almost definitely going to be a downgrade comparatively!

@@TheDarksideFNothing I live in Japan rn so gaming laptops are more expensive here, 40 series are like 500-1000 USD more than comparable 30 series laptops so yeah, this was by far the best value for my money.

The deal on Asus' website is $1650 USD but I ordered it on Amazon so I paid a bit more for it but I did it because it was easier and would come faster (I assumed), so more like $1780 USD. Isn't great by US standards but amazing for Japanese standards.

Major kudos to you for correcting and re-testing, and to XMG for being so up-front about the issue and getting replacements out to you. So for all intents and purposes the laptop 4070 is basically a laptop 3070Ti Plus (with the Plus being DLSS3). Wow. Almost seems like this should have been the 4060. Very interested to see how the actual 4060 performs. Keep up the awesome work!

this gen nvidia has gimped the xx70 models an below in more ways than just vram amount. Memory bandwidth is among the things they decreased to low end standards especially on the 4070. They want to upsell desktop and mobile buyers to at least the 4080 which is the least expensive card not intentionally made worse this gen.

@@TheDude50447 I ended up getting an Asus G14 4070. I would have gone for the 4060, but they ran a sale on the 4070 so the price difference was small. Performance is decent, but I do agree that anything below a 4080 this gen seems suited only to small, light, lower wattage machines.

thank you for this video. I was thinking of grabbing either a legion 5 pro with a 4070, or a 2022 zephyrus g15 with a 3070ti and a ryzen 9 6900hs (26gb) ram. Would you recommend the zephyrus one, even though I've heard it can sometimes overheat ?

Your video pushed me to buy an Lenovo Legion 5 with 6800H and 3070 for ~1280€. I would be willing to spend ~200€ more for frame generation, but laptops with similar build quality are way more expensive. So I'm still happy with my choice, I will look for an upgrade when RTX6000/7000 series or RDNA5/6 arrive.

@@karthikeyan53 Frame Gen from Nvidia uses specialized hardware and still is far from perfect, although totaly useable when certain conditions are met. While I'am certainly looking forward to tinkering around with FSR 3.0 it first has to prove itself.

@@attilad.8142 Nvidia said the same for DLSS too. But AMD proved that upscaling is possible on all hardware through FSR. FSR 2.0 was really good. I believe in AMD that FSR 3.0 will also be good.

I picked up a Legion 5 with a 3070ti during black Friday last year, and man am I glad I went that route. It easily holds a candle to this gen, and got it for a great price.

In auto GPU has max 80 Celsius, but in performance temp to about 89 and next it is throttled to about 86. I don't use cooling pad because I don't see any differences in temperature.

I actually made my purchasing decision based on your earlier video, going for an RTX 3070 Ti laptop instead of an RTX 4070 laptop. As such I am happy you're willing to come back to a video you have posted based on new info and even collect a whole new data sample, even if it's just to reconclude your earlier conclusion. By the way, I am very happy with my SCAR 17 (2022), it's everything I wanted.

i love how transparent you were in the video, while the outcome didnt change very much, the silver lining is that xmg were able to in part leverage your results to fix an issue and you get two videos worth of revenue

Hi Jarrod! Thanks you for videos! Can you suggest what notebook is better to buy now? I choose between MSI Katana 15 (i7-12650H + RTX 4070) and LENOVO LEGION 5 i7-12700h + RTX 3070 (not Ti). MSI is cheaper but the price is not question. I have not enough money to buy the top gaming notebook but I what to get notebook for play games on the highest graphics setting at least for 3-5 years and maybe use Ableton and coding on python. Thank you!

@@pastapasta4910 It's not real FPS. Latency is terrible compared to DLSS 2, and game support is pathetic. 40 series is nothing but a slap in the face on both desktop and laptop. This is almost as bad as the 2000 series. Might be worse. Hard to say.

i think right now people are just hungry to see a proper 4060 review. but more important than that is a comparision between 3060 vs 4050 coz i think thats the real game changer. if the rumors are true that 4050 is almost as good as 3060, then the prices would be absolutely insane in favor of the buyers. hopefully that is.

@@princehariz7859 ive seem some other youtubers comparing it, in some cases its pretty darn close even without dlss 3. but its hard to verify other youtubers so im waiting for Jarrods channel to do the comparison. still dlss 3 seems like a game changer moving forward. it may not work for ALL games, but it does work for MOST. and thats the most important part. you can always update and refine the software, but same cant be said with hardware which rtx 3000's simply do not have.

1:29 Hopefully you are right. As I got my laptop 2017 (new from store) It turned out it was an early sample from August 2016 with a GPU with some stability problems, the solution: install a bios which would cap it some 200mhz (if I recall it right) under the advertised and others companies products... It was a MSI laptop, I understand XMG manages issues differently.

My biggest fear is giving people wrong numbers and advice. Especially with gaming laptops costing thousands of dollars. Having said that, if you get early samples, that's an opportunity you have to take advantage of. It helps early adopters make decisions and the channel

No worries, errors happen all the time, we appreciate the effort you made for all these high quality videos. Mistakes aside, the 4070 Laptop went from 3% to 7% faster in 1080p, *MINUS* 1% to 2% increase in 1440p gaming performance comparing to the 3070 Ti. The numbers are mind-blowing, in a much less positive way. I guess we all can agree that the customers are fine, because the dissapointment stays the same

@@DeepMukherjee the cuda core count is lower, and the memory bandwidth is halved. I don't know if it matters for long-term use. Some say it does

@@tanthokgit matters a lot. Specially the bandwidth, you can see how it barely holds up at 1440p, and 4k is essentially not possible due to the shitty 3050 tier of 128bit bandwidth

4070 = 3070Ti + DLSS3.0 for less power draw. Sounds like a win all around if you’re in the market and deciding between the two at similar price point. DLSS 3.0 is significant if you’re not a pixel peeper and less power draw is huge for laptop GPUs.

I really want to upgrade my laptop soon from 1650Ti to 4070 or at least 4060. But at the current state, 4070 seems not quite in a great spot in term of performace based on your video. Well, none of 40 series laptop (except 4090 and 4050 from MSI) available on my country yet. So i can sit back, watch the upcoming news and more of your 40 laptop videos reviews and decide later on!

bit unfortunate i'd read the new 4090 laptops using the tongfang motherboard (xmg neo, mech gp2, recoil vii) were having issues with crashing and that it was suspected they weren't throttling properly. for high end product it scared me off to point where I went for pricier alienware m18 instead

Have you considered reviewing accessories for laptops, like USB hubs, docks, port replicators, KVM and alike? As far I browse shops in my country, product pages are limited to number of ports and nothing else - no description, no port version like HDMI, no bandwidth, anything. Some products have customer reviews saying how certain ports stop working in certain conditions, or how HDMI port is supposedly 2.0 but basically limits itself to what 1.4 can offer anyway. I am considering buying Zephyrus G14 2022, but it doesn't have many ports - including network one, so I would have to buy said accessories.

I just really want to see these two GPUs at different TDP settings. I have a suspicion that the 4070 is going to put up some great numbers in the 75-100 watt range. I'm looking for a laptop that doesn't sound like a jet engine and still performs well at higher settings. Really hoping a Ryzen 7040 and rtx 4070 fit the bill

3070 are power hungry monsters gpus....i think on 4070 on 100watt we getting equal performance without buring thermals vs 3070 on 160w getting hot as hell then 4070 is doing great

Ofc its your decision, but I sincerely hope you continue releasing reviews before the release date as many of us decide to buy based on independant reviews. Not to mention, here in the US, many laptops are offered on pre-order (so they're essentially asking for money for something we don't how well it will perform).

This way people can get a fuller picture. I know KZfaq has limitations but it's best so people don't try and hit your reputation should they see the slight discrepancy in the 4070 performance

I'm pretty sure most people prefer earlier reviews than later more accurate reviews, even for just a ballpark figure of how improved the new products are. It allows us to know which GPUs/CPUs we should look at to purchase. The differences between early hardware and final hardware, as shown here , are minimal and the conclusions don't change. Thanks for your thoughts! I'm not sure I agree about early reviews. If I'm buying something as expensive as a gaming laptop I want to an accurate representation of how it will perform. I'd also prefer to avoid having inaccurate information in my videos where possible.

Mainly because for most people they want to buy the latest gen hardware immediately, rather than wait months for the most reviews of every single option to be released.

Regarding 4000's series laptops from MSI, it seems like there is a plague of high DPC latency issues as well as severe stuttering in most titles, even older ones. Any plans to have a look into this mystery? It seems almost like it has been ignored by MSI for a long time and a quick search online reveals a ton os unsatisfied customers.

SOTR is very sensitive to CPU performance at 1080p, so memory tunings or CPU cooling could easily cause the 18% difference.

If the 4070, had the same amount of cores and such as it's predecessor, 10gb of VRAM and the same bit bus and bandwidth as the 3070ti, chances are it would be a great GPU, but Nvid called the 4060ti a 4070 and gimped the midrange.

Not sure if you have tried overclocking but 4070s are heavily voltage limited so the default boost clock is a lot lower when compared to 4060/50. If you add a 300MHz boost to the clock, it can actually trade blows with a 3080ti. But still, because of the lower bus width and voltage cap, Nvidia is intentionally crippling the 4070 in higher resolution and higher tdp versions. Perhaps they are trying to squeeze some room for upcharging 4070Ti laptops

Hello Jarrod, latest Bios v308 for Strix G16 laptop restrict i9-13980HX max boost clock to 5.3GHz instead of 5.6GHz (You can see that with HWInfo64). Could you please verify if your units are also affected? Do you think it could be just a mistake, or a silent CPU spec downgrade made by Asus? Kind regards.

I'm curious, wouldn't FPS increase with each NVIDIA driver updates along the line for these games? Isn't it a compatibility issue as of now? Or are these concrete permanent results regardless of driver updates, thank you for your reply

Things may change in future with drivers and also with games but I wouldn't imagine there would be a huge difference.

I believe the major selling point for the 4000 series is the frame generation tech, to give players the illusion of much better frame rates in some games. Other than that... I also can't really see the point of spending more money on these ones. Probably gonna get a 3000 series Ti now!

Did you test how much watts 4070 was pulling when playing games? My blade 18 with 4070 was doing only ~100 watts even tho its supposed to go upto 140 watts. And the performance was almost identical to last years 3070 ti on my legion 7i. Sometimes legion was even faster. I think its due to the really low memory bus nvidia did for the 4070. I was so dissappointed in the performance i had to send blade back. Laptop was in itself really good and up to my needs. That was just unacceptable for me. Too bad razer needs to take return for it but in the end they decided to put it in the blade 18 and marketed it goin to 140 watts. If i knew it couldnt go past 100 would have not ordered that model. Would appreciate if you could reply your experience here Jarrod! Good review and agree with you, 4070 just isnt worth it

Didn’t he already mention that in his original review? The 60/70 cards only seem to use their full power budget in benchmarks and hit 105W in games at most. XMG even has an extra mention of that in their spec sheets. No idea why that is though.

@@Lukashoffmann94 That's easy. Ampere's efficiency is considerably worse. Just to drive the point home, look at the 4090 (no, not the glorified 4080 they're using in laptops, but the AD102 config with comically large air coolers).

@@sonicboy678 Yes, but it is not like all benchmarks are short term stresstests and the laptops can keep up with the 175W of the 80/90 cards. I suspect, that the cards are just too underspecd in cores and therefore only hit their max. power draw in situations, that mirror an all-core cpu Test. Overclocking could help a bit, but Nvida probably already pushed the clocks close to limit.

These gpus have all lower than normal voltage limits. Your hardware is reaching the voltage set in the vbios and WILL NOT boost any higher.

Is it worth the extra money for the 4080 laptops than the 4070? I'm thinking about buying the m16 with 4070 or 4080. Sometimes the 4080 won't run faster because the laptops can't keep up but I'm not sure

For a laptop, I think Perf/Watt should be a major factor in your testing and comparisons. Is the 4070 more performant than the 3070 Ti, well, not by much, but how much more time do you get off the charger? How much quieter is it when gaming? These are very important metrics to compare between the two. Maybe I'm different, but people usually buy laptops because they use them for more than just gaming, so time off the charger is a very important metric. IMO
