There was a game plan to rock Walsh. A rookie, charged up by the emotion of the big stage. The moment presented Suaalii with an opportunity to fulfil that assignment and lay him out. A few centimetres lower he would have had a potential game-turning moment in NSW's favour + he would have a highlight reel for the ages again in favour of Suaalii, and potentially put fear in Walsh. However, he got it wrong and shouldered Walsh's head in a flying motion, Full stop. It is a game of inches. A heavy price to pay to achieve one assignment.

I think it’s still got a fair bit of emotion in it. Almost everyone can agree that was a send off, I think the annoying part has been a send off at the 7min mark has a much bigger impact than a send off at the 67 min mark. That’s probably where’s the suggestion of a union type red comes in. NSW would still be a man down the entire game on the bench and therefore fatigue more for the whole game but would only be a man down on the field for 20 mins, QLD would still have a full on-field team + bench the whole time with the 18th man.

Why would you take the emotion of the spectacle out of the decision making? Context is absolutely everything in this situation. The thing that would make the most sense to me would be, in a case like this, match the Bin to the 15 minutes of the HIA. The bunker can review it and upgrade if necessary. If it's dangerous reckless play then that offending player can't come back, but can be replaced on the field so it's 13 v13, 16 v 17.
@Zi3ro
@Zi3ro Ай бұрын
Just send the player off for the rest of the game. Matching the hurt player that is also off for the game. 20min of 12v13, then back to 13v13. It is fucking obvious. Accidents happen for fuck sake. Legit can’t believe kemp thinks what we had is best outcome possible. SOE ending due to an accident. Send off the player for the rest of the game. 12v13 for 20min. Offending team down a player for the remainder of the game. Other team gets 18th man advantage. And a penalty. This is a better outcome in every universe.

So protect the game? Or protect a player's career? Gotta look out for the players on this one. Game will just have to adapt. Their careers are short enough as it is. And it's not as if the game was a complete write-off either. NSW came back hard and were looking real good in the 2nd half. They were still a chance at 20-10 until Hunt's try with 15 to go.

You're basically saying if a tackle goes awry and is overly careless, and it takes someone out, then that team whose player was taken out deserves to be handed the win. I’ve heard at least 20 takes on this tackle by this point, both from NSW and Queenslanders, ex players, ex origin stars etc. Kempy is the only one to not agree that Reece slipping had any effect on whether or not the tackle would have been high - or at the very least made it look worse. @bb198 Ай бұрын
I also agree with Kempy. It dirtectly compares to the Dom Young tackle on Blacke Taafe earlier in the year. Taller man knocking out a smaller man trying to make a tackle, small men were fullbacks in the action of passing the ball. Both were send offs....the fact that they were both slipping has no bearing on the send off what so ever. Why didn't Suali'i go for a legs tackle? theres zero chance of knocking a player out going for a legs tackle....No, instead he decided to try to put on the huge hit and be a hero where the margin of error is incredibly small. He made the decision, he pays the price

It's widely known that Origin is prime earning period for the broadcasters to get their ROI (who finance the game, players salaries). There's alot of casual viewers who watch origin, but don't pay attention week to week. Viewer numbers would have dropped off at the 60m mark, and you'd argue it may impact game 2,3 viewership. Surely it’s not hard to see that if you lower the target and then it goes wrong, it’s 10 in the bin, and if you do not lower your target and it does wrong, it’s a send off… I don’t think it affects the origin brand if you try to eliminate head contact. If anything, there’s a different view where if players know that head contact is more acceptable in origin under a pressure cooker environment, there may not be the same amount of risk taken whether it be tackling or anything else which would impact the “rough” brand… thoughts?

Kempy is dead wrong. Joseph should’ve been sent for the game, but QLD shouldn’t win purely off a head high. NSW should be down a player, QLD activates 18th man. Joseph cops a long ass ban and a fine for being an idiot. Spectacle saved. NSW suffer a big disadvantage. QLD suffer a small disadvantage.

The argument has to be that it's not a consistent punishment. If he does that tackle 2 mins into the game, or 2 mins left in the game he gets sent off but the punishment inflicted is completely different. So the solution is the player get's ejected , then after 20 mins another player can come on.

@@bb198 Just say QLD go on to win this year after the 'match defining' send off in game I. Then next year the same happens - a player gets sent early and the opposition team wins the game and series - People would not invest as much energy and money into the game. QLD lost games I and II in 2014 and game III at Suncorp didn't sell out. Game III was in QLD in 2018 and 2021 when QLD had already lost and it didn't sell out. So no, Origin doesn't always sell out.

I don't think its that complicated, just find some new rule that punishes the person and team who did the bad thing, but doesn't end the game at MINUTE 7!. Something like "If its a send off, but its in the 1st half they get a different 13th man for the 2nd half", or "10mins off and he can't play the rest of origin", or "He is gone and you now have 3 on the bench". Just some rule that lands somewhere between 10 in the bin, and deciding the game at minute 7.

@mariahellas2832

The best way to keep the spectacle is for no one to be sent off. The best way for no one to be sent off is to play the game right. The easiest way to play the game right is to not be reckless. And the best way to not be reckless is to practice your defensive plays and focus on your own footy instead of fearing what qld might do. In the end it’s a game of mm but it’s the peak of our game you have to get it right both for your state and for the game itself. It’s not your regular Sunday afternoon game everyone is watching you and you better hope they are watching you do it right and not go for cheap shots. I love the boys but their take on this is trash keep at them kempy hopefully they come to understand after their salty bitch period.

All eyes are watching and I feel people would be turned off the sport if it wasn't a send off. I don't get this stupid argument from Queenslanders saying he was trying to take Walsh out though. If that were the case the blues wouldn't be silly enough to have 4 forwards on the bench and no centre/wing coverage.

Think it’s so easy to talk about “speaking for the game” once it has gone against your team. The same people who are taking issue with this decision being made in Origin are the same people who probably have an issue with inconsistent refereeing in the NRL - you can’t have it both ways. We can’t act like the Origin and NRL are mutually exclusive either - they have repercussions for one another, both with refereeing standards and suspensions.

Kemp mate I think the main the T&E are trying to point out is that no one is disagreeing that Sualii's hit was cooked, send him off that's fine cause Walsh ultimately didn't return on the field. But replace Sualii. No one wants to watch a 13 v 12 game (maybe QLD). There is too much money in the game to have games decided by a mismatch in player numbers. I think about NFL - players get sent off for dangerous helmet to helmet shots, next player up. At no stage does it deviate from 11 v 11. You see the impact on the game due to player skill (e.g a starter comes off and a 1st or 2nd string player steps up). If the team loses, then at least you know it was due to player skill and not cause you played a man down. inb4 "NFL squads are 52", well we have extended benches - let's use them. With the non-contact injuries peaking this year (hamstrings, groins etc.), having a 2nd rower out in the centres or forward rotation absolutely thrown out of wack cause of a 13 v 12 scenario just doesn't seem logical.

He was afraid to pull the trigger on anything.
