To be honest, Jason was the live show juggernaut. Of course with Cliff, they were just getting started and their live show was more primitive.

Saw them with Cliff. Never been same band since his tragic death. Metallica have released some great music and Jason and Rob are fine musicians. Imho they never surpassed their first 3 albums. Cliff Burton was truly unique.

I’m going to have to say yes. I saw them with Cliff and Jason, however with Cliff they were a completely different band in a good way.

About the fingers vs pick thing on bass As a bass player, I think there is some very good benefits to both styles, but its hard to pin down which one is better. For metal obviously you think the aggressive sound of pick would be better but then you remember people like Steve harris, Cliff, and even Steve diGiorgio in some capacity. Just shows that if youre original enough, you can make it work in any way you desire

Clifford had the musical genius and neoclassical training that made Lightning and Puppets arguably the best metal albums of all time. Jason had the big heart and the showmanship to carry them through their "iconic kings of metal" phase and he is dearly missed. Robert... well, he's helping with the "we're 60 and don't want to retire yet" phase. So in my mind, Clifford helped produce the best music, yes. Whereas Jason was the best bassist in terms of "give it all" performance and getting the fans riled up (And I actually MET Jason Newstead back in 1997 when I was a kid and he was an awesome dude). The intro to My Friend of Misery is also epic and my favorite "newstead contribution" to the band. Not like you can hear him on Justice anyhow.

Back then Metallica had the perfect recipe for musical success. Hetfield had the raw materials (The Riffs), Lars had the tools to build the song around Hetfield's riffs and Cliff had the seasonings and spices to make the songs to stand out and make the band sound even bigger. I'm totally convinced that without Cliff, Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets would've not gained the Legendary and Influential status that those 2 albums posses still to this day. He was plain and simple the musical Mastermind behind the band.

I also want to add that solo part on seek destroy, came right from the band Saxon. That part where there's a ref, then a little solo part, then a rif again, is something saxon would do go listen to the solo for princess of the night.

It's even a question really. Cliff added so much in the way of music theory and construction of their songs and they never really recovered from that after he died.

That intro looks to me like there wasn't a thought on scales but more that it was a cool thing you can do on the same two frets on two different strings.

I saw Metallica with Cliff on "Ride the Lightning Tour,February 1,1985. Royal Oak Music Theater,just north of Detroit. I was 18 years old. Not seen them since. Maybe again some day? It's so expensive to see a show nowadays. I think those tickets in '85 were like $9 ?

It's pretty clear that Dave Untamed Mustang did in fact NOT influence James Hetfield in any way to play the Flying V Guitar . James was Influenced by Michael Shenker playing a Flying V in 70s Scorpions , UFO , and MSG . Dave was primarily playing the BC Rich Bich Guitars from 1977 - 1985 for their versatility in Pickup Tone Options and Unique Shark Mouth Look . But that Guitar wasn't Built / Designed for Metal Music Tho . So Dave went to Jackson Flying V Guitars in 1986 . Its pretty clear Cliff Burton was into many kinds of Classical influences as well as some Country Rock Bands like Lynrd Skynrd , ZZ Top , Allman Bros , Doobie Bros , Bob Seger . Cliff Brought an Attitude , Character , Integrity , Showmanship , and Virtuoso Lead Bass to Metallica . But he wasn't much of a Backup Vocalist . That's the one thing Jason Newsted brought to Metallica ..He took the Backup Vocals for Metallica to a New Level paired with James . Jason brought a more Cerebral Artistic Intense Aggressive Emotional kind of Lead Bass playing to Metallica . Robert Trujillo is very talented on Bass and Flemenco Guitar as well . He can put together Arpeggios in his Bass Playing and has similar Intense Backup Vocals as Jason .

What made Cliff unique was his knowledge of music,and i never had the opportunity to see Metallica live with him since he died about two weeks after i first heard them in 1986,and far as someone saying Metallica were sloppy playing with him on stage,all ive ever seen is video footage that didnt have the greatest quality, but in spite of that he sounded good to me,plus he was also an entertainer,his bass solos were a big part of Metallicas live shows.

Those leads were written by Mustaine, you can here him play these a couple of years before on “no life till leather” seek and destroy was written and performed before burton joined the band. Anyway they are all great bass players, it’s a tradgedy burton died we missed so many great songs he may have written

Absolutely the greatest band that has ever lived or ever existed in music. No one has the amount of metal hits and overall badass songs that Metallica has. You can literally take those 4 first albums and listen to them from start to finish. No one has a repertoire they have.

The main riff of this song was interestingly written by Cliff...Richards, on his hit song Devil Woman.

Cliff wasn’t the first Metallica bassist. That was Ron McGovney who was only with them up to the first album

Metallica was brilliant, with Cliff. Jason had great stage presence, but Cliff contributed so much to the songs. After he passed, they just never wrote as well again.

Cliff Burton is in a league of Jaco Pastorius ... he showed the compositional and technical essence of bass to be played in the band (both rhythm/harmony-cord progression and solo/improvisation) ... As for finger vs pick (sound-expression and style of playing) they both serve different purposes of expression ... finger more versatile (slap,tapping,...) but pick (more direct metal sound of strings,response,speed ) ... similar to classical/flamenco guitar playing vs pick guitar (ex. Paco de Lucía, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin) .... but in BASS it is not many notes/high speed but right note-cord progression/rhythm (not doubling guitar/drums ... but give the impression he is ) where Clif Burton excelled and later on Sean Malone ... as bass is a skeleton of a band (rythm, hramony, bass melody)

Cliff is clearly Metallica's best bass player for Metallica.Jason Is also a killer bass player...his Flotsam and Jetsam material is killer but a totally different kind of bass player.Robert is a phenomenal bass player from punk funk metal hardcore he is cliff and Jason put together in one....so the question is kind of unanswerable....the unfortunate loss of Cliff left Metallica no choice but they have been blessed with killer replacements for the band....

You should check out how low they mixed cliff. You could hear him way better than Jason in and justice for all of course, but when you actually listened to the isolated tracks, you will be shocked at how much you can't hear in the final mix.

They were younger, cliff was amazing, Jason was good and Robert doing amazing job .

Actually Cliff was number 2. Ron McGovney was their first bassist. Also, if you want to count bassist on albums you have to add Bob Rock for St. Anger. So technically 5 bass players.

I’m in the minority, but I never got into Metallica after Cliff died. First 3 albums i obsessed over. I bought AJFA when it came out, and it’s good-but just wasn’t the same. I still respect the hell out of their art. It just hit differently without his influence.

Hi Scott! In fact, I think that Cliff contributed much more than the songs in which he signs credit. I still believe that «...And Justice for all» was composed to a large degree from the loose annotations of the famous notebook Cliff left -and can be seen in the disjointed and less complexly articulated songs regarding «Ride...» and «Master...», even "Kill'em all"-... After which Metallica was just a commercial American rock band (damn Bob Rock), with no real musical innovation. As for the bass player issue, for me Newsted was just wasted time, and not only in terms of instrumental technique... Obviously, Trujillo is a good fit in Metallica, but perhaps he arrived with many routines already established in the band -or, rather, I must say in that some kind of monster. Thanx, Scott; I love your way of analyzing music combining solid theoretical knowledge with just pure feeling 🎸🎵🎶

Cliff is my favorite Metallica bass player, maybe Trujillo is a better technical player than Jason or Cliff. Cliff was the best musician in the band and contributed more to their compositions than most people will ever realize. Cliff wrote most of the early acoustic intros and he would figure out the harmonies if Kirk and James’ wanted to play a harmony line in a song, Kirk said Cliff saved them hours of figuring it out on their own. Jason was a great spokesman and mascot when he was in the band. Trujillo is an awesome player but I don’t think he plays up to his potential in Metallica. Cliff was the only one with any music theory back then, and he also put very interesting stuff in the first three albums if you can listen on a stereo you can hear what he was doing, he was a busy boy and way ahead of his time as far as metal bassist goes. Love James’ bolt on Electra Flying V, Kirk’s is a “real” Gibson and when Cliff didn’t have his Rickenbacker he played an Aria, they used what they could afford. David Elefson is the best thrash bassist that uses a pick and it ain’t even close, but I prefer Metallica with a bassist using his fingers to me it’s one of the defining differences between Metallica and Megadeth the approach of the bassist.

Imo the notes of the intro are stolen from the second opening riff of the Van Halen song I m the one.

Jason and Rob are fantastic in their own right. But, IMO Cliff is what made Metallica special and separated them from other thrash metal bands at the time.

the "new guy" on bass is easily the best bass player they ever had. cliff was the original, newstead made them tight (they were sloppy as fuck with cliff), but trujillo can play literally anything, from jazz fusion to metal. cliff is my fav, but facts are facts.

the 3 albums with cliff they gained something each album without giving anything up! it was pure forward momentum! ......every album without cliff got progressively worse! Justice of course the first album without cliff they made gains in terms of it being the tightest they ever sounded! that was the peak of james rhythm playing!.....BUT it was the start of their decline in terms of musicality! .......other than "One", which is a great song, and the melodic parts of "to live is to die" which were really beautiful, the hooks just werent there!.....many of the songs sounded the same! ......cliff was the musicality! i respect jason for what he had to put up with and having impossible shoes to fill! but i dont agree with those who say he was such a great fit for metallica!....every live show i see footage of from jasons first few years, i always catch him out of the corner of my eye thinking "who the fuck is that?" .......what i liked about cliffs presence is it was a loose aggressive! ...by loose i mean he was intense but almost relaxed at the same time!.....he kinda held his bass like an extension of his dick! ...almost like a slash quality! ....hed bang his head violently, but seemed effortless at the same time! and seeing him and james beside eachother rocking out is the best thing ever!....... jason was very intense, but it was kindve a stiff intense! ....more of a chest beating intense!.......where cliff would often have a smile on his face, and to me that just feels more confident and baddass.

Ouch is right!! Kirk has always played loose and sloppy, same with Lars..Watch the 30yr reunion with Mustaine on a couple songs, he really is soo much more precise and in the pocket than they were it was great to watch. Mustaine, the thrash guitar God!!

Hi SHRED! 100% Better with Cliff Burton, whit his passing they started to change and after the "Black Album" I stopped caring, because it is not for me. I love Jason, I think he was awesome and allowed the band to connect to a younger generation, back then, Plus he had the best hair, haha! Trujillo is great and I loved him in Suicidal but find him weird in Metallica. Not that he is not competent, just makes no sense to me. Take care!

I think Rob is fantastic and is just as good as Cliff. Their styles are just different. However I'm a beginner bass player and know NOTHING of music theory and actual playing. So I might be wrong lol
