Very cool. I would almost argue it is a slight weakness in the story though that basically none of the main heroes died. Boromir and Theoden are the ones that come to mind who were minor heroes at best. It would have added gravity to the war and the stakes that were in play, and shown that even great triumphs are not won without sacrifice.

That's so cool, I didn't know that at all, but I've fantasized about a scene like that on my own. It would have been heartbreaking, and I'm not sure it would have been better, but I imagine Sam after having seen Frodo claim the Ring as his own, and Frodo and Gollum fighting over it, Sam stricken with grief and regret realizes there is only one way to get rid of the Ring once and for all, so he decides to make the ultimate sacrifice for Frodo and all of Middle-Earth, he bearhugs Gollum as he's dancing with joy over finally possessing the Ring again, and throws himself and Gollum into the lava of Mount Doom.

Sean Aston actually said (pretty sure during hobbits on tour or smth) that he was asked to do the scene when he gives the ring back to Frodo in way that looks like he was wanting to keep it other than just genuinely worried about Frodo. We needed Sam to be an absolute unit of a bestie, because if Sam held that "ring" for a little while longer; he and Frodo would have likely fought each other for it. It's like the: "water drinking" curse on the first Horcrux in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Harry's purpose was merely to keep Dumbledore on the task, as a *spotter* of sorts. I think it's more like helping someone _QUIT_ an addiction, rather then enabling them. Like an Alcoholics Anonymous "sponser".

Any Hobbit holding the One Ring for only a few hours, or even a few days, would be like Sam: give it up easily. The humble heart is hard to corrupt. Frodo, bless him, had the Ring for 17 years (in the Book) and used it often before even finding out it was "The One". Ergo, the closer the Ring got to its death, the more control it could have over Frodo. Had Frodo died against Shelob, Sam could have easily sneaked alone through Mordor to the Mountain and tossed it in without the trouble Frodo had at the end. Hobbits are hardly little creatures. But yes. Sam's a Legend. The MVP of the Trilogy.

Wow, well said.. an who am I to argue with Illuvantir? 🙇🤣 I'm not 100% sure that Tolkien would agree with you, as in letters he said his guess is that ultimately no one would be able to let it go. 😥 But for me personally, I agree with you. I think Sam would toss it in.. no problem. 😅 I even suspect Elrond, Aragorn, and Faramir would have a chance at it too! They all gave up easy chances to take the ring, and it seemed easy for them. In fact, those 3 didn't even struggle... they actually did NOT want it. Pretty EPIC!!! (Elrond tended a sick Frodo personally for days, with the ring right there, and even put a chain on it for Frodo while he was in a coma -- which means Elrond interacted with it... but by all accounts not tempted a bit! What a LEGEND!!)

I have a theory that it also amplifies what personality traits you already have (e.g. Sam is a gardener). So Galadriel is very attractive, desirable, and mysterious... I think the ring amplifies this to such a degree that everyone become infatuated / in love with her. A world of Simps. In such that everyone would do whatever she asked, and surrender their free will. ("all shall love me and despair") Or Aragorn is an awesome Leader, so everyone would follow him as King and he would order the world, at the expense of free will. What do you think?

Sam’s simple mindedness is what makes him such a great character, he gets offered the world as his own garden but turns it down because he already has a garden in the Shire, and that’s all he needs.

The best part is that Sam actually does become a master gardener spreading his gardens through Middle Earth but he does it without the ring because he wanted the challenge. Truly the greatest hero to ever live.

We shouldn’t put Sam on a pedestal and declare him immune to the Ring. Besides Tom Bombadil, no one really was. It was a struggle for Sam to carry the Ring. He did feel the temptation, it was very real, and it took a lot of strength for him to shake it off. If he’d carried it for as long as Frodo did, it would’ve had the same effect on him as it had on Frodo. For the most part, for humble bearers like Bilbo, Frodo and Sam, it’s about the length of exposure to it. It’s the naturally arrogant and greedy souls like Gollum who fall to its power immediately. But despite the short length of time he carried it, Sam was not unaffected by it. We should remember and acknowledge that, because that’s what makes his success in shaking it off so admirable. It wasn’t easy for him to do that.

I never saw the scene that way, but I see why a lot of people do. Makes total sense! I always pictured that scene more like "am I a bad person if I give my drug addicted friend this ring crack?" sorta thing. Like for the first time Sam realizes that his friend is getting totally messed up!

I almost wish the ring had a face so we could see it’s reaction to to notion that this new ring bearer just wanted to be a gardener. I imagine the ring thinking, “well damn, gardening? Really? How am I supposed to sell that?! Well, here goes nothing.”

The Rankin-Bass "Return of the King" covered this topic in an interesting way. While Sam carried the Ring and swore to finish the quest, he experienced a vision of himself using the Ring to claim victory against Mordor and transform it into the "gardens of [his] delight", and he declared he would do the same to the rest of the world. At the last moment, before putting the Ring on, he forces himself away. It was then that he returned to free Frodo and return the Ring to him. He realized he couldn't continue to carry it because the temptation, after such a short time, almost took him. I always loved this depiction because even someone as strong-hearted and good-intentioned as Sam could do great evil with the Ring. Transforming the world into a garden, in theory, sounds wonderful, but it would actually be a terrible thing, especially when this includes forcibly turning sentient beings into animals.

Frodo is not the example of “small kindness” that Gandelf waxes poetically about in the beginning. Sam is, Sam is immune to the ring entirely because of his pure goodness and devotion to his friends. He is the counter to everything the ring attempts on Frodo becuase he just naturally has the power to fight it’s effects better than anyone because he is just so single handedly kind and good

True. Well said. For me, personally, I viewed that more of Sam being worried to give the ring to Frodo (like a person resisting giving a drink to an alcoholic).... but I totally see your view of it too. Based on how the movie is structured, I bet your view is probably what PJ was going for. Pretty much everyone struggles with the ring except Elrond. Even characters that did not struggle with it in the book, such as Aragorn and Faramir.

Out of everyone, Sam's only true desire was to save his friend, something the ring could never give him, and for that reason Sam became a true hero.
