Nile Rodgers (who was part of Chic) later said that the song was directed at how Studio 54 would casually reject "undesirable people" from entering, with "freak out" being a sanitized version of "f*** off"

Yes! The DJ's were playing their music at Studio 54 but when they wanted to get in the club, they weren't allowed into the club, so Nile & Bernard Edwards (the bassist) wrote it. "Good Times" is another dance banger from CHIC. Cannot tell you how important legendary producer Nile Rodgers is - Produced Bowie, Diana Ross, Duran-Duran, Steve Winwood, Madonna, you name it!

That's right, Rubell & Schrager wouldn't let them into the club, though they had an invite from GRACE JONES! Yep, they were mad & back at their apartment not far from there they were playing their guitars & screaming out the window for Studio 54 to "F*** OFF". The tune started to take form, they changed the chorus's famous chant to highlight a dance that was huge back then, "The Freak" & the rest is music history. Respect to you & yours.

Nile Rogers is the guitarist and he also produced hits for so many other artists; Madonna, Bowie, Daft Punk, The Pointer Sisters. He wrote the songs, played guitar on them, produced them. His guitar is even called "The Hitmaker" because it's been on so many number one songs. He is still touring today, go see him if you get the chance.

CHIC in its original line-up was a huge act, but in the later 80s Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wanted to go behind the scenes for production. They knew their stuff. But there was a clamor for them to perform and they would take the act out for tours. On April 17, 1996, the original line-up did its last performance at The Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. The whole concert is available on KZfaq in segments and individual tunes. Bernard Edwards, the bassist, was suffering from the flu and running a very high temperature but still went on. That night after the show he retired to his hotel room to recover from the show and try to get better. He never woke up. He died in his sleep, a tragedy to all CHIC fans. I would recommend their performance f "Good Times" as the group incorporated the Sugar Hill Gang's rap into the song. Good fun!

Let me give you a little history of this song. It was originally written as "F*** You". Grace Jones, a hot singer and actress at the time, invited the band to come party with her at Studio 54 in New York. When they arrived, security wouldn't let them in. They went home and wrote it. Afterwards, they liked the tune so much that they changed the lyrics to a more radio friendly "Freak Out". The dance came after the song...not before. Also, the guitar and balls players were two of the hottest producers in the 70's and 80's. Nile Rogers (guitar), the late Bernard Edwards (bass). They produced Diana Ross, The Pointer Sisters. In the 90s, Nile Rogers co-wrote and produced "Let's Dance" by David Bowie. He also produced albums for Duran Duran and others. They're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"Studio 54" was the hottest nightclub in the country...located in late 1970s New York city. Come Friday into the weekend ppl dressed to the nines and waited with baited breath to be let in. The owner would come out and hand pick who would get in. If u didn't get picked..you swallowed your pride and waited for the next weekend. Celebs from every walk of life couldn't wait to be seen at "54".

The rest of us went to "Elaine's", "Limelight", "Monster" (Greenwich Village) but everyone wanted to get into Studio 54 (not me though, too pretentious & I refused to beg at the rope - plus I was underage anyway). But from documentaries I saw they had 2 VIP rooms - VIP & VVIP. The VVIP were Margaret Trudeau (Justin's mom), Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Liza Minnelli, Bianca & Mick Jagger - even Jean Stapleton (Edith - All in the Family) were regulars. Underaged celebs like Michael Jackson, Brooke Shields & Tatum O'Neal were regulars there too.

He produced and played on Bowie’s Modern Love album- who he introduced to the still little know guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn , who also played on that album, and he wrote We are Family for Sister Sledge, produced Diana Ross, Madonna- Like a Virgin. Chic’s baseline was the baseline for the first rap hit- Rapper’s Delight. Nile Rogers is a hugely influential musician and music figure.

The lead guitarist, in an interview, spoke about the song’s origin. Apparently, back in the late seventies when New York’s infamous studio 54 was still in operation, the band was making an appearance there, but he had arrived late and had gone around to the stage entry door to go in. Studio 54 personnel were notorious for not letting people in unless they ( the staff ) decided to allow it. So the guitarist knocked on the door, and some guy answers the door, like “WTF do you want?”. The gentleman explained that he was with the band and had arrived late. This guy at the door laughed at him and said something like “nice try” then slammed the door shut. The guitarist was so pissed that he took out his guitar and started strumming the opening for this song. But instead of singing ‘freak out’, he said “f**k you!”.
