@CT-7667 Cool. I haven't read Zahn's new books yet. I kind of didn't like how in books like Choices of One, he made Thrawn into more of a nice guy. The Thrawn of his original trilogy was ruthless af and was an excellent villain, undoubtedly filling Vader's shoes. The funny thing is that the Rebels series did a better job returning him to his ruthless origins.

As to why Thrawn continued bombarding Lothal, he did say something like "I didn't want to do this, but it's unavoidable now." Perhaps he had orders to bomb the city. He has a conscience, but Palpy sure doesn't.

That’s what people don’t often notice about Thrawn. He’s not actually evil. He’s just really, really immoral.
@horsemumbler1
@horsemumbler1 2 жыл бұрын
@@LysimedVenteel It's not that he's immoral, so much as he views the moral picture at such a far remove that he appears immoral or amoral at first and second glance. Thrawn's purpose is to serve the ultimate good of the Galaxy by building the most effective militarily machine he could in defense against the looming Extra-Galactic threat, and his purpose in that is the preservation of his people. He is evil, he's just not immoral. His sense morality demands he do evil things to build and maintain a position of strength sufficient to combat greater evils. He chose the path of evil because he saw it as the most likely path to avert a greater Evil, and that's why he's a villain. The path of the hero is to reject evil deeds at the outset, and then forget the best path from the remaining morally just alternative.

Dave Filoni and Pablo Hidalgo, (and most of the animation team and story group at Lucasfilm,) are big enough Star Wars fans to be just as knowledgeable and appreciative of the E.U. as anyone else. They too had nothing but E.U. novels, comic books, and games, during the, "dark times," after Return of the Jedi, to pacify their fandom with, just like us. They're just the lucky ones who have the privilege of creating new Star Wars content, and how they've handled pulling certain characters and themes from, "Legends," material, is a testament to their fandom. Which is another reason why we're all so automatically comfortable with anything Dave Filoni creates, and why alot of people are just wanting him to be given more live-action responsibilities, like his own, "Star Wars story," or new trilogy, as opposed to some other people, if not just completely running things over there at Lucasfilm. #GiveFiloniTheWheel #CloneWarsSaved #HashtagsSuck

Great point on Thrawn's continued bombardment of the city even after Ezra surrenders. He knew Ezra could just decide to do something sneaky instead of actually turning himself in. Great speech by Timothy Zahn on why we had to move on from Legends. No room for new post-Jedi movies and to go through and a la carte choose things to remain canon would be a nightmare. And yes the stories aren't going anywhere and can still be enjoyed.

@jonathankoan

The marvel fandom that read the comics and kept up with all of the media(comics, movies, t.v. shows) is significantly larger than Star Wars. Marvel is probably around 30 percent of fans that keep track of everything whereas less than 1% of all star wars fans have read a large amount of the books. Couple that with the fact that the EU had gotten really convoluted and by the end you had to have read a majority of the books to understand what was going on in the most recent books. I read about 1 or 2 star wars books a month and I started last year and I'm still not to the Legacy of the Force and the Fate of the Jedi, which is where the new movies would have had to have been set in the timeline. You can also add to the fact that Timothy Zahn, Kevin J. Anderson, Michael A Stackpole, Aaron Allston and Christie Golden, all authors who wrote for the Star Wars expanded universe, all knew that they were not writing canon in the first place. They were writing media tie-in fiction which was purely for the enjoyment of the reader and to make Del Rey Publishing/Lucasfilm Publishing money. When 150 million people have seen 1 or more Star Wars films, only around 3 million have read the best selling star wars book(Heir to the Empire), and only around 150,000 or less fans have read more than 10 of the books, it really makes sense why you would move it to legends. Especially since the authors themselves are ok with their work not being canon.

@@jonathankoan Nope. Everything you said is wrong.
@jonathankoan
@jonathankoan 5 жыл бұрын
+Albert Einstein It's not. If you look up the original A New Hope ticket sales, you will see that there were around 150 million tickets sold. If you listen to what Michael A. Stackpole said at Dragon Con in 2016, he said that Timothy Zahn's novel "Heir to the Empire"(which were #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List) only sold about 1.5 million units(Hardcover and Paperback). That, being the top book in terms of sales, means that ony 1% of Star Wars fans have read that book. That number does get lower when you look at the other books and it drops significantly when you look at people who have read many of the books. The average of the remaining books is typically under 100,000(certain books are the exception such as the Phantom Menace Novelization, The Force Awakens Novelization, The Force Unleashed, The Last Jedi Novelization, and Thrawn Alliances). So, lets say that everyone who purchased those other books have read everything(which they haven't, but for calculations sake then we will say that they have) then only 100,000 people have kept up with the Star Wars Expanded Universe books. That means that 100,000 divided by 150 million is .07%. That means less than 1 tenth of 1 percent of fans have read the novels. If they based the films off of the Legacy of the Force or Fate of the Jedi, they would have to have lots of additional exposition(Ex. the Dark Nest Trilogy, the New Jedi Order Series, the Young Jedi Knights Series, the Thrawn Trilogy, etc) which most people would not understand or follow, which is not condusive to a franchise. Therefore, everything I said is not WRONG, but therefore right. If it is wrong, why is it wrong?

Unlike with Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a completely different universe from the various comics and other stories and was designed to be that way from the very first Iron Man film. Even within Marvel Comics themselves, they'll just set things in a different universe when they want to tell new stories that don't fit alongside previous ones, and I'm not sure but haven't they had their own share of continuity reboots? I know DC certainly has.

@@agustinbaletti A lot of people have legitimately criticism of how Disney has handled star wars. The sequel trilogy was absolutely awful, it's not defensible. Beyond that, people do have criticisms of things, sometimes it seems like they're just looking to find something to criticize, but it's not that often. Oh important thing though, Disney steals peoples art, copyright strikes anything star wars related, and talks down to the fans on a regular basis. The fact that you can't even have the ingame music playing in a playthrough of a star wars video game shows how dumb Disney's copyright war is. Compare this to George Lucas, where parody, fan films, were encouraged and people wouldn't be copyright struck for illegitimate grounds.

I found myself really disappointed with the finale with the Purrgil, yes it was the only way to catch Thrawn off guard, but it also made it feel as though the victory was unearned to the rebels. Great video! I was also impressed with TV Thrawn. Aside from how his character works in the show I refer to the animation design of Thrawn, his eerie soundtrack, his controlled movements, and of course Lars Mikkelsen's voice sent shivers down your spine. I have two theories about the bombardment of Lothal. The first is that when Thrawn was on Coruscant, the Emperor agreed to support his TIE defender project on the condition that Thrawn bring Ezra Bridger to him. Thrawn knows Ezra's weakness is his people and that's why he attacked the city to make certain the Jedi would do exactly as he said. Second, this isn't the same Thrawn who started off in the Empire trying to minimize civilian casualties. In "Rebels" he has been defeated by forces he can't understand and the Ghost crew has been a thorn in Thrawn's side for far too long. So it makes sense to me that he'd go to brutal extremes, telling Ezra that Lothal will be destroyed even *after* Ezra surrendered to him.

Is it possible that Thrawn bombarded Lothal on Palpatine's orders? After Ezra was brought before Palpatine on the Chimaera, Thrawn had no reason to continue the assault on the city. I think that (at least in Rebels), Thrawn was portrayed as fiercely loyal to Palpatine, he often referred to him as "my Emperor" and during the Battle of Atollon, Thrawn said that he doesn't need glory, but only results for Palpatine. So if bombarding civilians is not Thrawn's style, why do it after Ezra's surrender? That definitely seems more like a tactic Palpatine would employ: inflicting terror on the Imperial population. Someone willing to allocate unimaginable amounts of resources to construct two battle stations that can destroy entire planets surely isn't above having one of his top personnel fire laser cannons on a city from the sky, possibly to make an example of Lothal to the rest of the galaxy. And while outside of Rebels (meaning in the Thrawn books and comics), who Thrawn's allegiance truly lies with is ambiguous and the extent of his loyalty to the Empire is more questionable, even then, I can't picture him doing that without being told to, and I can only think one person capable of giving Thrawn orders: Emperor Palpatine. And I doubt Thrawn would defy Palpatine even if he wasn't truely loyal to the Empire. I hope that makes sense to anyone reading this.

What do you mean? Thrawn stopped firing once Ezra surrendered. Although he did intend and attempt to completely destroy Lothal later in the episode, but he said it wasn't something he actually wanted to do, implying it was something he was ordered to do by The Emperor. Or, perhaps, it was something Thrawn felt necessary as to make an example of such rebelious actions, and in his corrupt mind, justified it as such. Coulda also been to prevent an uprising on the world, especially after the citizens had already witnessed an ISD open fire on them for no reason (from their perspective anyway). Regardless the reason, Thrawn is a villain. He isn't a complete monster, but he is ruthless and will do what it takes, that is his character and I don't see how Rebels went against it.

I want Mara back in canon :(
@Prof_Tickles92
@Prof_Tickles92 5 жыл бұрын
They kinda can’t bring Mara back. The way Lucasfilm’s story group has explained it is because in Legends Mara was a dark Jedi. And they don’t agree with the concept of dark/grey jedi because it’s a contradiction(and it is). And with the creation of the inquisitors as the emperors assassins, Mara wouldn’t fit in there either as she’d have to be pretty damn evil(which Mara never was). So in order for her to be re introduced into canon her character would have to be altered tremendously. BUT there is some good news on this front. Story group has given Timothy Zahn partial creative freedom over the character. He can re-introduce her at any time as long as it’s a mutual agreement between Zahn and Story group.

Professor_Tickles 92 remake Mara Jade within canon can be done, as a different badass character but fighting the Dark Side.
@thelegate8636
@thelegate8636 3 жыл бұрын
@@Prof_Tickles92 Mara was one of the Emperor's Hands. They were assassins that only took orders from the Emperor. Very few people even knew they existed. The Inquisitors are and always have been Jedi hunters, not assassins. They are an official branch of the Empire and are pretty well known. There is no reason Mara couldn't be reintroduced as one of the Emperor's Hands or something like that. Emperor's Hands still exist in Disney canon btw, so there's no real issue with it.

I have a question for the next Q&A that I think a lot of people would be interested in your thoughts on... what do you think would happen hundreds or thousands of years in the future after episode IX? We have good prequels that take place thousands of years before, and something a long time after shouldn't cause too many conflicts with the canon story line.

I wonder if he'll be related to Snoke in some way. Not to sound rude, but I think Smith has a very roughly handled made from clay sort of facial features, which they could accentuate and alter with makeup and whatever else to bring his appearance closer to Snoke's(check out his old Doctor appearance for what I mean) He'd also fit as a First Order officer or even a Knights of Ren. Or he could be a Resistance member.

I never grew up with being exposed to Thrawn as a kid. What I looked up about him and what glimpses I seen of Thrawn in Rebels it felt like they did understand him, but he was significantly de-powered for his initial incarnation from before. He was basically like a force of nature in the old material in which the older generation talks about. I am not surprised they done this, though, in a kid's show. The Clone Wars already shown proved to me Star Wars cartoons will water down stuff from what they were originally. When Thrawn came around I didn't expect him to be at that level of o.p. I did see him being portrayed as a powerful threat closely living up to the rep. he had before, but not to the same intensity. It's just that the series I knew would just dumb him down enough where they do not have to come up with a complex plot of how the characters would defeat or make it out alive against him. In other words I knew the series wanted to make a cliche Saturday morning heroic adventure plot. You know. Kind of like Skeletor or Thundercats. The villain would be threatening but at the end of the day/episode he always devolved to being undermined or defeated by the hero in a simple way and they yell out, "I'll get you next time, _____ (insert name.)!" The thing that made me say cootos to the production staff is they didn't water him down too much like they could have. It was clearly a compromise in between level to suit them, and not too much where it undermines the fans memory of the first Thrawn.

Never seen Rebels and despite considering myself a SW nerd for years, I gave up on the movies after TROS, but personally, Star Wars has never been so engrossing as the original Thrawn Trilogy books. That was an Author who GOT Star Wars as it was for me back then (late 90s when I first read them, and again around 03-04). I've never read Zahn's other SW books but I highly recommend his novels The Icarus Hunt and Angelmass. Both of those books are stand alone epics in their own right but if you still have that romantic 70s-90s Han Solo style vision of science fiction, both of those books will please you. i say that even being really anti-novel (I find it hard to relate to any protagonist fir even the most minor of things, which means I very rarely read or stick to novels. Zahn is different).

They really flattened him. Regardless of whether or not you think Thrawn is evil, he had *personality* in the books-the guy dresses up as a Mandalorian, drinks beer on the job, gets all wistful about coral art, shrugs, scoffs, smiles, etc (and NOW we know he brings his closest friends tea). Rebels Thrawn’s personality is “smart cultured evil dude who has a Thing for art.” A mustache twirling Bond villain. He’s lifeless. And unnecessarily creepy. A blue Nosferatu (complete with spooky organ music! XD) lurking in the darkness instead of the dignified, intimidating, darkly charismatic figure in the books. And I can’t say I’m fond of the new character design, either. One thing I will say Rebels got right was the sarcasm and subtle sass he delivers when an associate does something he finds particularly stupid. Edit: also, I’m highly suspicious of Zahn’s approval of how Thrawn was handled because a lot of the character’s actions in Rebels are directly contrary to what he does and says in legends books. I mean, what’s Zahn going to do? Say he doesn’t like how Disney treated his character? Career suicide right there, lol.
