Wu-Tang Clan formed in 1992.
It may sound impossible to fathom that a group that has sold over 40 million records to date could possibly be considered a disappointment, and maybe disappointment is too strong of a word. But if you’re a true hip hop fan, you understand how impactful this group was expected to be back in the 90s, opposed to how quickly their run was over by the year 2000. Don’t get me wrong, of any rap group in the history of hip hop, Wu Tang’s music has probably touched the most locations on earth. Simply because to this day no other group had a more unique story, group of characters, influence, name and even logo than Wu Tang. They were really the story book hip hop group, that formed at just the right time, all were just the right age to introduce a new, young energy to the rap game, and as far as groups go, New York really needed something to save them from the dominance of the West coast taking over the early to mid 90s. Besides all that, their plan to take over was even more well thought out and executed almost to perfection. Nothing ever is, but WuTang sure had every ingredient to come close enough, but in the end believe it or not that didn’t happen. What did? Do you see Wu Tang as a disappointment? Here's what Stunted their Growth. Stunted Growth Music

I fundamentally reject the idea they could have done more. You chose to not only revolve this idea around one of the most influential groups of all time, but a high selling, extremely business minded, Grammy nominated group. Don’t even get me started on relevance, you don’t get multiple Wu features on recent griselda projects and get to claim slipping relevance.

They've reach their potential. They have dominated the 90s and even had success into the early 00s. Had multiple landmark albums such as 36 chambers and wu tang forever. Plus solo albums including liquid swords, only built for cuban linx, ironman, supreme clientele, 36 chambers the dirty version. Also, influencial albums for different genre/content of rap like horrocore: 6 feet deep, resurgence of mafioso: only built for cuban linx, marijuana content: Tical and the blackout! with Redman, wild content: 36 chambers the dirty version, philosophical rap: liquid swords, black film samples: ironman. All have a plaques to show for it (The pillage, Tical judgement day 2000, bobby digital, nigga please, uncontrollable substance, golden arms redemption, immobility, The W, golden flag and tidal 0). Also, death row was already dead once suge knight went to jail and 2pac death. During start of 98 ruff ryders, murder inc, cash money, no limit, terror squad, aftermath, rocefella emerging as the top crews in rap. While wu tang, bad boy, outkast, mobb deep, bone thugs still maintaining there position during the late 90s. I agree there run could've been longer had rza backed up the beats he did in his basement before the flood and had more drive to produce amazing beats that will gell well during 99 and beyond like premier, buckwild, pete rock, easy mo bee, No I.D. and ect.

I’m not even a full 2 seconds into the video but I can say with my whole chest that the question posed in the title is absurd. Wu-Tang Clan was absolutely not a disappointment, nor would I say their growth was stunted. Wu-Tang gave us numerous classics (albums and singles) both as a collective and as solo artists. Their influence and impact is unmeasurable. They not only changed the sound of music and altered pop culture, they also changed the music business. No one did it like Wu, and while many have tried to replicate their success, no one has come close on the same scale. The only reason they may not be as prominent today is because, as JC Stunted Growth himself likes to say, times changed. There’s less focus on intricate lyricism these days and more on vibe and feeling. Production sound has changed from gritty, soul-based samples to more melodic keyboard beats. And that’s all fine - nothing wrong with that. But after 30 years in the game, when their influence is still being heard, felt, and seen, it’s kinda outrageous to even suggest that Wu-Tang was in any way a disappointment.

I think their greatest issue was that they failed to adapt through the changing hip hop music scene in the late '90s and early 2000s. They did not do many mainstream collabs outside of the Wu-Tang until it was too late. If you listen to the intro track to triumph on the Wu-Tang forever album, The RZA explains his mindset about the music industry in 1997.

@@emjay11bravo but their formula became stale. you listen to a wu song from 2007 and it will sound exactly like something they put out in 1997 on Forever. Rza's production became stale and the other producers in the Wu family all put out a sound that was too similar to Rza, which made everything Wu put out whether group or solo - all sound the same. Method Man was the only one who had any real progression in his career and did a good job of putting out music with different types of producers.

Raekwon wanted to be in the Method light and didn’t take advantage of what made him likable the street guy that spoke wise but could get real grimy with the story telling. Rza production and vision fell off. U-God not my flavor. Deck and Gza connected with the lyrical miracle lover no problem with that but rza production didn’t drive the lyrics into your head. And started saying dumb sh*t like "Bong Bong". When certain Wu members started dropping solo albums AFTER the Wu-Tang 4ever album is like they rhymed different. As if they rhymed weaker. Not as strong & more scripted. And it's like they lost their touch individually. And finally, Wu went from trend setters to following d trend. I have never been disappointed by Wu tang besides that "once upon the time in shaolin" situation...I love every album and most solo albums and my shoulder cap of my left sleeve is a huge Wu W...that being said, they definitely had issues that stopped them from having the longevity they should...RZA demanding to be the only producer on Wu albums and ODB dying was the 2 things what really hurt them the most

Creatively Rza fell off, and bad business impacted overall morale. Couple that with the Summer Jam incident, that’s hard to bounce back from. They’re definitely one of one, but come 2000 it was a wrap.

The 4th album Iron Flag was their worst but the 5th was still pretty good. Problem is rap isn't designed for longevity like rock. The closest thing hip hop has to rolling stones is somebody like Jay-Z or Nas. Wu Tang is the hip hop version of the beetles where the whole is still greater than the sum of its parts. Another thing that hurt them was that they didn't have enough time there were 10 of them and each one had to share producers and feature on each other's songs. Each one should've had a platinum record.

@@rubski-ds9yc UZI was ok but those songs off IF never really stuck out to me like some of the songs on Forever, 36, the W or 8. Another problem with IF is that there was no ODB they tried to compensate by getting Flavor Flav but it wasn't the same. 8 Diagrams has better beats my favorite Ghost verse on a Wu record outside of impossible and I can't go to sleep is heart gently weeps. But hey different tastes.

The only thing that was somewhat a disappointment about Wu-Tang was their album catalog as a group. They've dropped some bangers as solo artists but as a group they could've had a far more impressive group catalog. The 1st two albums were their best. Overall, is Wu-Tang (as a name, brand, influence,) a disappointment or stunted? HELL NAW!!!!

I enjoyed this frfr. Wu Tang is by all means the best group ever. It really was a movement, not to mention the identity and teachings they brought to the game, much like KRS-1, Rakim, PRT, etc did before them. Though the pettiness got in the way, none will ever be able to do as they did on a grand scale for hip hop culture in general.

Wu is so legendary and has so many hits that they probably couldn't do a versus on them with anyone outside of a whole record label maybe a group like Dungeon Family. Even that wouldn't be a close match up. Bad Boy, Death Row, Cash Money, or No Limit are their only peers.
