I run a sump on my system it takes care of all three of those issues without me having to use air stones. I also run co2 during the day, I have had no oxygen problems in my tank. I do agree though that this is an aquarium topic that new aquarist need to address, it is an important topic for both healthy fish and healthy plants.

Super video! What should I do with my filter (with lily pipe causing waves on the surface helping airation) when the CO2 is on. Does it impact CO2 leaving the tank faster? Would it help to turn it off at the time or maybe an hour later to help CO2 generator and turn it back on when oxygen is needed for the plants? Thanks
@markfigueroa2549
@markfigueroa2549 Жыл бұрын
The circulation caused by the lily pipe is great for moving CO2, nutrients, etc around the aquarium. A bit of rippling at the surface will cause a bit of gassing off, but it’s negligible (unless the outflow is causing lots of splashing at the surface). The benefits of the circulation are positive.

That should be sufficient in terms of aeration, but if you wish to check scientifically, get a CO2 drop checker - Official WASABI Aquarium Channel Moderator
@markfigueroa2549
@markfigueroa2549 Жыл бұрын
There are gadgets that measure dissolved oxygen. A CO2 drop checker/digital reader will give you info about CO2, but it will tell you nothing about oxygen levels. You may have high CO2 and low O2, you may also have high CO2 and high O2. You can have low CO2 and high O2 or both low CO2 and low O2. Rather than buying a tool to measure O2, just observe your fish. If they’re acting normal (typical activity levels and not gasping at the surface) and your plants are doing well, you’re good. Adding some surface agitation at night (if injecting CO2) is a good idea: even more so if you run a warmer aquarium, are heavily stocked with fish or are using medications. These things can quickly deplete oxygen in the water.

So, if during the day we inject CO2 into the aquarium (which will lower the PH) and 1-2 hours after CO2 is switch off we will start aeration (which will increase the PH). Won’t this PH variation be harmful to livestock? Won’t this cause algae issues ? Can we use PH controller with aeration method ? Thanks a lot for your videos.

What if im not running co2? Would aeration still help my heavily planted tank? Should I run an airstone all day along with my hang on back filter to optimize effects?
@markfigueroa2549
@markfigueroa2549 Жыл бұрын
If you’re not injecting CO2, do not heavily aerate your water at night. This will allow CO2 to build up when your lights aren’t on and plants are respiring. This way, when your lights turn on there will be more available CO2 for your plants to use for photosynthesis. After a few hours into the light cycle, as your plants use up the extra CO2, aeration can help add some more into the water from the atmosphere.

@WASABI Aquarium Channel You say in the video that aeration should run opposite of CO2 on a separate timer as to not cancel each other out. My question is, does having a power head running in the tank for 24 hours a day for water movement cancel out the effects of the co2? Do I need to disconnect the power head while the co2 is running? Thank you!
@markfigueroa2549
@markfigueroa2549 Жыл бұрын
It’s really increased surface agitation that will cause more gassing off of CO2. So unless the power head aimed at the top, loss is minimal.

Co2 will lower the ph
@markfigueroa2549
@markfigueroa2549 Жыл бұрын
Ph fluctuates with the amount of CO2 in the water: the more CO2, the lower the ph. So the effect aeration has on ph depends on whether it’s causing the amount of CO2 to increase or decrease. What people really mean when they say plants do better in a lower ph is that they do better with a lower kh. Keeping a low kh for sensitive species is what’s important as a high kh can prevent the uptake of some minerals. Ph and kh are related though- if you have a high kh, you’ll have a high ph as the carbonates/bicarbonates are buffers that neutralize acid.

@@jygogaming3550 CO2 levels cause ph to fluctuate but do not affect kh. My tanks’ ph fluctuate between 6.2 and 7.2 on a daily basis- no harm to the fish. Since I keep only soft water fish and crystal red shrimp my tanks’ kh range from 0-2. I’ve never had a problem in my 7 years with any ph crashes. If I were to neglect performing maintenance, there would be potential for a problem.

@markfigueroa2549
@markfigueroa2549 Жыл бұрын
Typically, you do not want to use heavy aeration at night as you will gas off the extra CO2 being released by the plants while they are not photosynthesizing. Since you do not inject CO2, you want to maximize the amount available when the lights turn on. But, there may be factors that may require some aeration: water at higher temperatures doesn’t hold as much oxygen, overstocked tanks deplete oxygen faster as there are more fish using it, medications can also deplete the water of oxygen. I only use extra aeration at night on my non CO2 tanks if I have to use medication for my fish.
