I am considering the ferns in my non co2 cold water (19c) low light tank, but since changing water often promotes algae in non co2, will ferns be ok with long water change periods as long as the parameters remain stable? I have a large amount of flow, with a 1800L/h canister filter and a small glass mount sponge filter that is for extra circulation, I guess somewhere around the 1000L/h mark as well. This is in a 120cm (160L approx) tank, flow is very strong! I have a chiller and a heater combined so the temperature never moves from 19c. I plan to have only Anubias, Java ferns and crypts and possibly some water lillys. The plants I currently have are mostly types of hygrophilia that are growing reasonably well, one sword (which has never done well) and two anubias which are responding very well as of recently. None of these except the anubias are ideal for this type of tank, so I will be remodelling in a few months and the ferns have interested me. I can attest to the whole soft water thing, I had many problems with plant sickness and poor growth, I have recently started to switch to rain water mixed with seachem equilibrium at the minium dose, for GH of 3.5 to 4 max is the target I am aiming for a KH of no more that 1, and ideally 0.5 to 0.7. I have been changing my water with this new mixture 50% every week to slowly remove the highly hard and calcium and carbonate rich water for a few weeks already, it's seen much improvement, however, as many scientific research papers show that in a low co2 aquarium, new water introduces a co2 spike/fluctuation which promotes algae bursts shortly after. I have tested this and I have confirmed this is the case, so I am hoping ferns will do ok with infrequent water changes. It is also important to keep in mind that in a low light, cold and non co2 tank, the nutrient and metabolism turn over is a fraction of a typical co2 tank, I believe this is one of reasons a lot of veteran non co2 tank owners have great success by refraining from changing the water too often and dosing very small amounts of nutrients only every few weeks as 90% or more of the requirements comes from the animal waste. I would love to hear any thoughts on this and personal experiences. I have followed the guidelines for non co2 from Tom Barr's papers and forum guides/articles and they have already done so much in helping my aquarium do much better. Great video by the way! Very informative.

Hi, I have a problem with rotalas, after half a year of beautiful growth I cut them a lot and suddenly they stopped growing completely. It's as if the cutting itself is to blame, the other plants are fine. Can anyone help? A week ago, I threw in tablets to the roots as well as macro fertilizer. But the plants are not responding and compared to how they were growing before, they have completely stopped growing... Is it possible that the pruning and e.g. the stress of it is to blame?

Is it too stressful to transport fish and bamboo shrimp from their aquarium to fresh dechlorinated water for a ride 20-30 minutes to their new aquarium home?

So, if during the day we inject CO2 into the aquarium (which will lower the PH) and 1-2 hours after CO2 is switch off we will start aeration (which will increase the PH). Won’t this PH variation be harmful to livestock? Won’t this cause algae issues ? Can we use PH controller with aeration method ? Thanks a lot for your videos.

I am late to this as it's 2 years old but this is the exact video I needed. I spent so much money on a beautiful aquascape but got slammed with work and life that I did not keep up with trimming my tank. It's completely overgrown and I didn't know how i should go about trimming it as i didnt want to kill it by doing too much of a prune. This video took those worries from me and know it will be ok as long as i keep taking care of it. Subscribed and looking forward to watching more videos.

Do root tabs solve this issue as well or is the life span of the aqua soil going to kill the plants regardless?
