Adding baking soda to your vinegar prior to using it for cleaning makes both the vinegar and baking soda ineffective because the chemical reaction cancels each other out. After the bubbles are gone you are left with glorified water. Either baking soda or vinegar used separately is much more effective.

I'm good. I have never gotten sick by fruits/veggies but not washing it. I have a better chance of dying in a plane crash than from eating a unwashed avocado. I'm done letting this guy control my life by living in fear of every little thing I eat.

My Mother was a Doctor and she told us at a young age to always wash our fruits & vegetables before eating. Before there was a Covid pandemic, long ago when we were kids, my Mother taught us the proper way to wash our hands. My Mother knew best!

I was so surprised when we got Covid that on TV they had to tell people to wash their hands, I thought that was a common sense to wash hands after you come from outside, using bathroom, cleaning etc. unfortunately I see some people in the public bathroom don’t even wash their hands 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. I thought it’s a common sence to wash all fruits and veggies too. And grains before cooking.

Yes I have always washed my avocado's it just always made sense to me. Not to mention people touch them for ripeness. I can never understand why people eat fruit right in the store, especially grapes....yuk. I use a spray bottle with vinegar then sprinkle baking soda on my grapes...works great.

This one got a 👍from me. I eat a mini avocado daily and wasn’t washing them. I simply cut them around and scooped them out with a spoon . I’ll give them a little shampoo before the cut going forward. Cheers 🥂

I always wash my avocados first before cutting in. I even use a grease cutting dish soap on them, because they’re so oily, and any pesticide that might be on them is probably also oily. Just rinse real good till the peel feels squeaky clean. 🥑 I then cut them into quarters and peel off the hard skins. They seem to come off easier in quarters…Or maybe it’s just that after wash & rinsing in warm water, the skin is easier to release? Idk

All the research I can find suggests veggie washes are on par with either a vinegar wash or a baking soda wash. I appreciate the information on washing vegetables … simple tap water wash is much better than nothing.

@@Sincere4Eva Often I’m amused by opinions that use the word “should” ~ I will only add my opinion that life is full of people whose minds are in overload or maybe they didn’t have much adult guidance about food as they were growing up. It’s unfortunate for them that they are APPARENTLY trusting that what’s for sale is safe as is. The USA legal system has many foundational principles, including “Let the buyer beware” which is an indirect acknowledgement that retailers can legally sell products (other than specifically illegal substances and weapons) that are potentially harmful to health. People are free to be ignorant.

@@EB-bl6cc 😄 That’s the thought process screaming in my mind whenever I’m preparing any produce. Today I read about people being sickened by lettuce served at a fast food restaurant. I quit eating lettuce anywhere because it’s so easy for it to have tiny worms the same color as the lettuce. Sure, we can soak the lettuce for DAYS. It’s just not that nutritionally valuable enough for me to do all that fuss. Organically raised berries are worth the trouble.

Panera Bread just rinses them in water, even after they fall all over the floor, and thats if its not in the middle of the rush, during the rush if they need more they just fill up the container with unwashed avocados and slice them to use how much they need and toss it back in the container, while it cross contaminate with all the other unwashed Avocados! I don’t eat fast food anymore even the “healthy” places

When I was a teenager I worked at Panera and we were in the middle of a rush and my coworker she accidentally dropped the sandwich she just made but everything was still basically in place so she she put the sandwich right into the container to go and yeaaa I feel bad for whoever ate that

Pesticides and herbicides goes in to the fruit. The more water a fruit contain the more pesticides it contain. Its still worth washing and peeling to reduce the harm.

I live in Darwin northern territory of Australia and we have a deadly bacteria that lives in muddy soil and kills a few people each year, usually people when gardening. I thin it's called melioidosis. I have read it is in lots of South East Asian countries. Some American troops quarters when they were fighting in Vietnam so I imagine lots of other people in Vietnam catch it too.

As a microbiologist I can tell you vinegar and water is not a disinfectant. Only soap and water or spray with 70% alcohol. And yes all fruits and veggies must be washed with soap and water

I wash everything!! Including bananas!! I use my dish scrubber. But I love the idea of using the vinegar and baking soda. I use that for my kitchen counters and bathroom! With some lemongrass and spearmint essential oils. Smells so good and clean!! I never thought to spray the fruit too. Good idea!

The smart way is to wash them in batches as you get them home. I have taken to filling up the bowl wtih warm water and dish soap and washing veg/fruit there, then loading the dishes in to wash them after.

I wash all veggies. Some countries septic drain off running straight to vegatable fields. never mind the pest control chemical on all veggies. Vinegar good cleaner.

I always wash my avocados. Just for the fact is that they’re suuuuper dirty, all the brown stuff. They probably roll around in some truck and then get dropped on the floor by the store employee. I soak them in slightly warm vinegar water, then rub baking soda on them and rinse.

ya no, farmers dont give a shit how they grow the product. Its to many to count. Instead they depend on your to clean it before you eat it, and they just grow it and make sure it looks up to standards on looks.

Plus they probably spray the watermelons with insecticides,I've noticed when I cut a slice, place on my plate,the juice that drips from the slice, onto the rind and then onto the plate isn't clean, it tastes awful like chemical awful! I know wash the watermelon before slicing into it.
