Before you spend the money replacing your timer you may want to try to repair it. In this video, I open up an Invensys timer from a Maytag. This may also be found in Whirlpool, Sears Kenmore, or others. This was the first time I had opened one and it was an easier fix than I thought.

Thank you for excellent video. My Maytag washer was directly start agitating without filling water either at the beginning OR during rinse. I suspected it is timer, so used your video as guide to repair it and saw 2 pins got shorted inside, so separated them, filed and put it back. It is working fine now. You saved me $100+ just for part and repairmen asked $300 parts+labor for repair. It hardly took 30 min to do this repair myself using your video. Part that I repaired was W10111389.

Thank you! You are a genius - seriously we are living in a crazy time right now and my washing machine broke at what has to be the worst time imaginable - I watched countless videos, replaced parts, and just about gave up except it would be over a week before the repairman could come out, and longer if a part had to be ordered before the machine would be working. Then I found your simple to follow Video, and tried it, it worked! I can not thank you enough!

Although I have a 20+ year-old Kenmore 90 series which uses a completely different timer that is not "repair friendly" (bent metal tabs hold it together), seeing the innards of your timer and the cleaning of the contacts allowed me to bring my Kenmore timer back to life. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for making this video. It gave me the confidence to open up my timer. My issue was simply that there was a *ton* of lint around the leaf switches. Vacuuming out all of that lint fixed the issue and saved me at least 300 dollars.

Great video, I was able to take apart and fix my timer on a 20 year old Maytag washer that was otherwise in good shape. I did break a few plastic tab pieces from the timer but it seemed quite secure when i put it together anyway. 20 year old plastic is brittle. Thanks! Saved me about $150 for now.

Your video put me on the right track. It wasn't draining after agitation. My extra problem was 1 contact/switch was fused/ stuck together. I used a hacksaw blade to seperate them and filed the remainder down. Put it back together and it works fine. My other comment is everyone else said it was a lid switch, but if it fills and agitates then the switch is working. Best as I can tell, it either is working or not all the time the lid is closed.

Awesome video!!! The timer on our Whirlpool washing machine was failing. I looked into replacement and the part alone was well over $300. I then found this video and decided "why not, what do I have to lose?" I removed the timer, opened up the timer and I could clearly see that many of the contacts were contaminated/tarnished. I cleaned off the tarnish with steel wool, reassembled, reinstalled and ... YAY, we once again have a functioning washing machine ... all thanks to this video :) Thank You Thank You Thank You. I had a problem where the washer would work intermittently and the timer wouldn't run. I suspected a clock motor and ordered that, then decided to check those reed switches. I found the circuit that provides power to the clock motor was dirty and cleaned that set of contacts using that exact same tool you have. I use that contact burnisher for a lot of fine electrical contact work and it does a great job. Replacing the controller can cost in excess of $160 and cleaning the contacts is a lot less expensive. Great vid.

this was great. i cleaned up my pins easily..they come apart which made it even easier to access both sides....it did fix one problem....(previously i took things apart to deep clean the washer)...must have done something when reinstalling....agitated when it was first filling.....then after messing with it forever...agitating went away and only spun dry....i swapped out the water sensor as the likely culprit but new part didnt fix anything...i think my water valve blew a fuse or broke or something...i tried a Multimeter but it seemed ok...im not great with a MM...but after cleaning the timer...it seemed to narrow things down to a water value issue...at least after a good cleaning on the timer. i appreciate the video so i dont waste money and time on a timer if it isnt that

Adam your video was exactly what I needed to see in order to refurbish my timer. I have yet to do it though. Can you tell me more about using contact cleaners alone with the file. What I'm asking is some contact cleaners also claim to add a layer of protection against corrosion while cleaning the contact. I'm fairly sure I'll have to file my contacts as they remind me of the old auto ignition points. I'd like to find a product to help prevent future contact arcing.

Without removing the to gear (assuming this could be even done without damaging the assembly) it seems that reinserting the pin block with the gear and pin actuators in place risks not having the pins in the pin block not seating properly or maybe becoming damaging. Mind you ive never done this so this is all just a guess. Am i making sense?

I love this video. I bought a replacement timer for my roper ras7133rq4 washer before coming across your video. When installing the replacement timer, the pin inside the shaft will not slide down so I am unable to put the timer knob on as the final step in timer replacement. Do you have any suggestions? Does it need to be in a certain position to get it to slide down? My original timer did not have this problem. ☹ I took my old timer apart and cleaned the prongs as you suggested but the plastic part inside the timer is burnt so I don’t know if it will work.

Most of these plastic timers are almost impossible to reassemble. Not to mention filing them is at best a temporary fix. If the contacts are that burnt, they will continue to burn up. I've fixed hundreds of machines with timer problems and filing might buy you a couple of months or a couple of days. ;) Its best to just replace timer.

Lost tech - distributor points file from pre-electronic ignition in a 50s to 70s car. Try to keep the point so that they maintain contact across the whole surface. This minimizes the current density and minimizes the chance for further arcing.

Woah, my timer is way different. But this principle is the same. In the smaller timer I have, the "finger" contact section slides out of the main body very easily. Two tabs (one hidden) pop it out, and then that part slides out to where you can see the rotating part. Somehow, my whole timer was not working or advancing, so the contact cleaning part was less important than correcting the part that must have jammed all of the contacts. It looks like mine is working now

Adam -- It would have been instructive to show the technique for opening the timer case such that the detent is disengaged without damaging the brittle plastic lip holding it in place. I was proceeding to gingerly unclamp the first detent and saw that I would have irrevocably cracked the plastic lip that holds the detent in place, so I halted. The part is over 10 years old and appears to be brittle by now. Obviously, the timer was not engineered to be repaired i.e., disassembled. The new part runs from $100 - $200, depending on vendor, so I sure wish I could clean up the leaf switches myself.

Hello, I have a kenmore model 110.12852100 and my timer’s model no is 3952958 (the beige one). My problem is that when the cycle gets to spin, I hear the motor (or the pump?), but the drum doesn’t spin, so my clothes are still soaking wet. I’ve checked my timer and the connections seem to be super clean. I still sanded them a little, but the problem is still there. What else do you think it could be ? Thanks !

@geoffreywoodyear1585
@geoffreywoodyear1585 5 жыл бұрын
The timing sequence chart should be on the inside of the back panel of the washing machine along with the schematic of the wiring. There is no need for it though. The mechanical timers are very sterdy and once you clear all the contact points you are good to go for years. You read it like a graph. Color coded connections i.e. wires are on the x-axis, modes are on the y-axis. A blackout in the graph or table tells you what wires are connected for that mode, e.g. black and grey corresponds to super wash. Your trouble shooting should now move to the other parts of the washer

@@cod1ak yes! I got it working! it ended up being the temperature control module. I don’t know if that’s the exact name for it but it’s the black module that is right behind the knob that you turn for changing the water temp from hot cold or warm. Do someone knows if this trick will fix a timer that is stuck in a cycle, i mean my washer is filling water, starting washing the clothes but it keeps going on washing for hours and the time is still at the start not moving. I pull the knob, turn it one or two click away, push the knob back, and there the timer start moving again and finish all the rest of the cycles. ?? Can it fix my issue ?

Just did it for my timer, some pins were black, i use sanding paper, checked with multimeter and everything was ok but didnt fix my issue. If somebody have an idea: i always use the "regular" mode, it fills water and starts washing but keeps washing forever, the knob "jam" always at the same place in the cycle, it pull the the knob, turn it 1 mini click further and push the knob down, it starts washing again and finish everything as should be... i doubt it is the little motor inside...

+Anthony Felts If you look on the back panel with the timer and other controls, you will see one with a vacuum hose on it (clear plastic). This is for the water level sensor. It uses pressure from the water filling to trip the circuit and let the machine know what level the water is at and to stop filling. Check that the hose is tight and does not have any leaks from wearing. The sensor may need to be replaced. You can take the hose off and blow into the other end and it should think it is full and stop filling if the sensor is working.

I changed the switch on the control panel and the hose down to the side of the tub.

Great idea but getting the leaf switch pack back in correctly is another story. Why didn't you show this part?
